It's a bit problematic that the original interview is behind a paywall but from looking around other sites what he said was something along the lines of “We’ll think of a city first, then the characters,” and then saying the script would likely be over 1000 pages long. He was heavily implying they hadn't even started yet.

Yeah, I hate it when some websites make some minor changes from things that were said. I have searched it and it says everywhere something different. This is the reason why my guess is that the development of GTA V takes all in all 3-4 years, and definitely not longer.

The amount of years this game is in development is nice.

But doesnt say much.

I mean, How many people work at R*? How many hours a week are spend on it?

What did it cost to make?

I can tell you that 100 people worked on Grand Theft Auto IV all the time and during the whole development, about 1000 people worked on this game. The development took about 4 years and costed about 100 million dollar which was a record back in 2008.

3-4 Years.

I think they started working on V in Early 2009, i don't think they started right after they released IV, they worked on other games during that period, that's what i think.

I think there's ~150 people at Rockstar North alone that work on it.

That's not including people from other Rockstar studios. San Diego were rumoured to be assistant North. There is that Technicolor company too and, of course, any game testers that Rockstar hired in January 2012.

There are a lot of people working on V. I think development started in late 2008 but perhaps it was just a small team working on it at first. It would have went into "full development" around 2009/2010, I think, then year or two later, in 2011, they announce to fans that it's in full development. Small teams would have helped out other studios with their games but the majority of the studio would be working on V.

I'd say ~4 1/2 years of development between starting and finishing work on V.

LOL no not all all LOL, you have to be high to come up with some of the stints and scripts they put in GTA, but your from the netherlands, I'm from Canada, we all enjoy our herbs and if we were part of the team making GTA V, I'm sure we'd be high high most of the time LMAO, I probably would....writers block??? no problem, a bottle of whine and a nice spliff and 60 minutes later, a 1000 page script emerged LOL

Yeah, the Duke Nukem Forever developers were too lazy. The only thing they have done was sipping whiskey until they have filled for bankruptcy in 2009 and Take-Two took over the work on the game. LMAO.

My thoughts -

Being in full development 2-3 years

Research and Getting VAs 1 year

Planning it out and writing script and changing things 1 year

Red Dead Redemption was devoloped by R* San Diego, not R* North. R* North has been in some form of development for GTA V after they completed IV. So 3-4 years. They're obviously trying to do something big with V, just like they did with IV. I have the feeling that trying to play IV after V comes out will be like trying to play III after SA came out.

gta v has been devlopment since before gta iv was released.

i read somewhere a while back how rockstar said that they started working on gta iv before sa was released.

it would only make sense.

first they would have to get all of the basics, the locations, characters, and all that good stuff.

so i would say they started gta v about 2-4 months before gta iv was released.

you cant wait until the last minute to start making a game as big as gta v, it's not a COD game.

theres alot more sh*t that has to be done to a adventure game then a gaming that is specific in doing one thing

late 2011-2013

Let take me the wild guess: you think that the development of GTA V started in late 2011 and you think that the first trailer was pre-rendered, right?

Yeah, the "let take me the wild guess" part was sarcastic because I knew what Zee wanted to say. wink.gif

I think it would be a nice touch to add how long the development time has been the GI article.

agreed, it might also give us a time frame for GTA IV, lol, but I would like to know how long the game has been growing for, it might give us clue about the scope, size, detail in GTA V

3-4 years. It is indeed true that there were other games and DLC to create. But I think that not the entire team was on those. Atleast a part was already developing GTA V.

I'm pretty sure DLC's are the easiest part of develloping a game(forgive my grammar), since everything is done, you just create a character a script and missions, not the entire game from scratch, ya know.
