After the GTA:SA was released they made a plan up to 10 years, which involved all the games they are going to produce.

So, they mothafakin' know what they are going to produce in 2020.

Where the heck that kind of information came out? - It is so with all kind of businesses. If you have a little knowledge about companies, you know that they have to have a plan, to competite other companies, that produce the same production.

Even R* workers dont know what they are doing.

That's obvious num nut, but that "plan" is always subject to change down the pipeline. They've planned GTA V since GTA III, but when did they actually say, ok good job on GTA IV, on to the next?

There was an interview with Dan Houser I believe in late 2009 where he said about getting to to work on GTA V "We'll think of a city first, then the characters." Then I believe it was around February of 2010 that reports surfaced of the little R* van having been spotted around L.A.,

So, I vote 2-3 years of develoment of the V story. the map could have been slow cooking for a while longer tho

of course, R&D in the technology is surely ongoing thru all of their games, right?

Don't quadruple post, you f*cking moron.

On-Topic: I'd say about 2-3 years, because the R* van spotted driving around LA was reported in February 2012, if I remember right.

Someone from Rockstar admitted they started working on GTA V right after GTA IV released, but they explained it was very little work at that time but if I was to give my own answer I would have to say the GTA V game has been in development long enough for trailer #2!

I'm sure they stated it after IV, but it was more pre-production until the episodes came out. Then once Red Dead was finished, they went into "full production."

I think they started in 2008/2009. They probably had one team working on the DLC for IV, one helping other studios with Red Dead Redemption/Max Payne 3 and one working exclusively on V.

With majority of the work done on Max Payne 3, which was then due to release in March 2012, they announced GTA V in October (5 months before MP3 release) and that it was in "full development" which I think here means "We're now working full time on GTA V since we have no other games to release." Obviously, Max Payne was delayed by 2 months. I think if they knew Max Payne 3 was gonna be out in May then they would have waited to about January to announce GTA V instead of in October. That would mean we'd only have a 6 month wait between the trailer/screenshots and it wouldn't have been such a pain in the ass for us fans to wait.

In the last 11 months they have been working real hard to get it finished. When the trailer was released they had obviously got most of the map complete (some of it looks unfinished) and I'm sure the story was finished being written. I think that the game must be almost complete by now and that all they have to do is polish things up, make sure everything is working and pick out as many bugs/glitches as possible. In January this year Rockstar North advertised for game testers. Say it took them a month to get everyone started working on the game then it means they have done ~8 months worth of testing. Not sure if it's a long time or not for that sort of thing.

I really think the game will be out March-May 2013. Retailers need 4-6 month notice before a game goes on sale so they can sort pre orders/bundles/deals etc out. Also, no matter what people say, Rockstar need to market the game. I think we'll definitely hear something in the next month or two which is October/November (when the game was announced/trailer released).

I'm thinking October is most likely since Rockstar said on the 24th August "a few weeks or so". It's been almost 5 weeks now since they said that and 5 weeks is definitely pushing the definition of "few" but they said "or so" which gives them some extra time of about 2 weeks AT THE MOST! I expect we'll get something around 15th/22nd October which will be almost a year since the announcement.

AFAIK, The same team that bought us GTA III worked on IV. This might mean that while other devs were working on the episodes, rdr, and mp3; the III team was quietly putting V together.

Victim_Crasher

In my opinion... maybe about 5-6 years sarcasm.gif

Includes some concept, story making, art, lincensing, etc. ( What they usually do before "full development" )

The only prove is only a "GTA V trailer concept" in GTA IV funland sigh.gif

or.. in my other opinion is about 4-5 years. Just like IV suicidal.gif

Rockstar announced back in 2007 that Rockstar North (the studio that developes the Grand Theft Auto series) works on a new game called Agent. The last time we heard something about that game was in late 2009 when the release for 2010 was announced in a newswire post but it never happened. In late 2009 Dan Houser talked about GTA V and he said that the script has about 1000 pages and the game is in early development so that was 3 years ago. GTA V will obviously be released in early 2013 so my pick is that GTA V's development takes all in all about 3-4 years.

"We'll think of a city first, then the characters," Houser claims. The Times adds that Houser's script will run to around 1000 pages, although it's not specific whether this in reference to GTA V or Red Dead Redemption.

He continued, "Within Rockstar, sometimes we feel that some of our games get singled out and held up as pariahs. All we want to do is tell a story with rounded characters. Like GoodFellas, which is a key film for us, our rounded characters happen to be criminals.”

Well, they probably began development literally a few months after GTAIV which was literally finished in 07. So, probably 5 years. Hence, the "largest and most ambitious game to date"

It's a bit problematic that the original interview is behind a paywall but from looking around other sites what he said was something along the lines of “We’ll think of a city first, then the characters,” and then saying the script would likely be over 1000 pages long. He was heavily implying they hadn't even started yet.
