K-Malo94
I'm sure they could find a way to make it feel land locked while actually being an island. (using mountains to block the view of the water)
nic_23
map with water around it any day but i could see how they could do mountains however in gta there are helicopters so i think there would be a few bugs, surrounded by water is much better

faizanali
The traditional way is just too much, In every GTA the map is an Island i want mixed up situation that includes all of them. So it would give a new kind of feel and a new kind of GTA. Edited September 18, 2012 by faizanali

packardcaribien
How about something like this: <SNIP> If you go straight north into the infinite desert (by car or plane etc) you will end to into south direction to the main area, the same if you go from LS straight to the ocean after some miles you'll see LS again in the same direction. Another idea would be a small planet <SNIP> But the problem with this is the curvature and lack of perfective If you are going to do that, just scrap the infinite idea, and just have the map turn you around without knowing it once you reach a point in the desert or ocean when you can't see the map anymore. You go far enough into the desert, you start coming back to the map, same with the ocean.
JoeJoeMcTwist
There really is no difference in being land locked than ocean other than it being ocean is less realistic. You would still have the same amount of land to discover and what not but it wouldn't be unnaturally cut off by water. I always found the idea of the map being an island was the easy way of doing it. Especially if you can fly jets now. The map looked so tiny once you got into a helicopter in IV, breaking immersion.

Pyrrhic
I would prefer a mix of both but if I had to choose one it would be the classic water.

73duster
I'm VERY curious about how GTAV will use boundaries. In RDR, it was easy to use the vast terrain to limit the player from going beyond the map because you were either on foot, or horseback. With the inclusion of planes, i'm not sure HOW it's going to be restricted. Obviously, there will be a point you cannot go beyond, so perhaps it will be like San Andreas, where your plane would just spawn elsewhere. Maybe you'll be shot down because you have entered a restricted airspace.
RockStarNiko
Remember what happened when you got drunk in TBOGT, you wake up in a random part of the city. How about if you travel too far off the map, you see bright flashing lights and then the screen goes black. You wake up the next day in a random part of the map after having been abducted by aliens. LOL, that's pretty good. It would be great if every time you ventured out too far, the screen would go completely white, sort of like passing out. You could then wake up on the sidewalk in front of the hospital, as a result of any number of scenario's which could include being shot down if you were flying over a restricted area, or attacked by a wild animal in the mountains, or hit by a rogue wave if you were out in the ocean. You could wake up in a daze, almost like in TBOGT when you just woke up in the street with no knowledge of how you got there. However, every once in a while, something really strange would happen, like with your idea about aliens. Imagine all of the crazy scenario's Rockstar could come up with. Anyhow, it would be an interesting way to make the boundaries amusing.

M4Andreas
Imo i would like to have an endless desert or something like that... Because it's really annoying me that i can't climb on the mountains(on the angle of the map-in case)... gta is a freedom game.. so i don't wanna have such a limits. gustovski
alen abductions i think that would be a cool randomly occury event when in the country side first some random spooky lights then shadows amongst the trees then the SLENDERMAN apears and the screen goes to the loading screen to make you wake up on a random spot on the map after waking up the protag walks around like he has a sore ass

A lot of people have been saying this. I'm not really saying that we shouldn't be allowed to climb the mountains. I think we should and I look forward to trying it. I just mean that instead of seeing nothing but water surrounding the map we should see endless mountain range, desert, forest or ocean. New York isn't an island in the middle of the ocean and neither is Los Angeles. It would be a totally different thing if it was set in Hawaii! It's fine when you're on the ground because you get lost in the city but when you're above it in a helicopter then it just looks silly. All I'm asking is what people prefer. Island or connected to land.
el_roy1985
Only way I wouldn't mind being surrounded by water, is if the land mass is the size of a small country and not just a few small islands like in IV. I think endless desert on would side would be the way to go. Then if they don't want us to be able to go on forever in that direction, they can have a 'No Fly Zone'. Which would be a boundary, that if passed, military jets would come after you and shoot you down for being a threat to the air space. Would be a fun dogfight in which you could see how long you can evade or even shoot down the attacking jets.

packardcaribien
An infinite coastline wouldn't need to be crappy. It's just like that picture, just have it repeat every once in a while. I'm not saying I wouldn't be happy with the island, but I think that the land surrounds is much more innovative and more real-feeling then an island map; especially if there is a desert, since a desert can't be up against the ocean like it was in SA.
