JaggySnake
Just wondering what people think. In III and IV the maps were surrounded by infinite water. You don't really notice this when you're driving about on the ground but when you went up in the helicopter you could for see miles and it really broke immersion in the game when you see that it's just 3 islands in the middle of endless water. I, personally, hope that Rockstar have done what they did with Red Dead Redemption. The edges of the map were lined with huge cliffs/mountains/hills that you couldn't get over and more importantly...couldn't see over. It really made it feel more real. Los Angeles is surrounded by water/mountains and desert. To the left of the map there will be the ocean where you can only go out so far. The other sides could be restricted by desert/high mountains. For the sea/deserts they could just be infinite and no matter how long you walk you just don't get anywhere. The mountains just will be so high/steep that you can't climb or fly over them. Just look at this image: Those mountains look massive (and I know planes could fly over them IRL) and they should be put in as barriers of the map instead of just making Los Angeles an island. GR7
No thanks, the huge mountains in the trailer were of the main things to be excited about, it would be a huge missed oppertunity if they weren't climbable This image Versous posted pretty much confirms they will be climbable since the area shown is around the same height of the other mountains It even looks likeyou can see some cloud to the left
JoeJoeMcTwist
yeah Red Dead handled it well. The game world, as huge as it was, felt like a part of an even bigger world because we couldn't go past the mountains. I'd rather there be a land boundary that you can use your imagination to fill in the blank rather than endless nothingness. Endless water feels more like a boundary to me than endless land. Ruscris2
Random generated terrain which will obviously have random generated vegetation on it, on a side, and the other, water. It's is possible, even on current gen. There is no other developer who has done this (pseudo random generated world), so it would be an original idea. The problem is that there is no way to sync this in multiplayer, unless it makes you download terrain portions from the host, which would slow things down... But hey! They are expert game programmers! They should think about a solution!

Jack0711
IF Rockstar made it so mountains were the boundary, imagine the people saying "I want to get over!"... One week and mods will be made to break barriers, just for the player to land in Blue Hell or something. At least with sea people accept it's a boundary. True but you have to admit that area looks pretty high itself, it's level with the clouds at the left and there's a plane in that scene that is flying even higher, you can kind of see it next to the top propeller of the front turbine. Nun0567
Surrounded by water would be a better choice. It would be really bad if you can't climb those mountains in the trailer tho.

kesta195
Endless ocean on one side, mountains on the other. I think the mountains should be higher than the height limit so people dont complain about flying into an invisible barrier.
grandola
Fighter jets can fly over mountains easily. Therefore if it is landlocked on the north, east, and south, it should be endless flat lands, not mountains, that act as the barrier.

But that would be unrealistic, I thought the whole reason some people wanted a landlocked map was for realism. I see a bit of a contradiction there

Yes, but then you run into the old problem of having the ocean combined with impassible mountains. What is to stop the player flying or sailing around said mountains? Because then you start having to use artificial constructs such as invisible barriers which are bad because they break the suspension of disbelief. Darbuka
Water is better because in a game like GTA one of the most fun things is that what ever you see, you can get there running, driving or flying or whatever but if we see come cool mountains and then can't get there it will be like Wth??! Gta ain't suppose to limit you like that.
thebig
I wouldn't like mountains as a boundary, it just wouldn't feel real. Normal passenger planes fly on a height of 10km, the highest mountain on earth is less than 9km high. A military jet can easily fly over it. And if they do use mountains as a boundry, they would have to put a whole side of the map with a mountain chain. Otherwise you would be able to fare around it. And of course I want to be able to climb a mountain and do some crazy ramps off it

RockStarNiko
There are plenty of forests surrounding Los Angeles correct? I would like to have infinite forest as the boundary for most of the North and East. For the West, infinite ocean. South? Well I am hoping we will have the San Diego and Tijuana area included, so for the south, infinite desert. This is how I would like to have the boundary set. If there is a mountain range, you can climb it or fly over it, on the other side is an infinite forest. If you walking or driving through it, or flying over it, it is endless, so you just turn around and fly back.
packardcaribien
Well, I tried my hand at designing various maps for GTA V and while I don't really have much of a problem with Infinite Oceans, I can see why infinite land in at least one or two directions would be very nice, not just because it would be more realistic, but because it would let you drive a car at its actual top speed (something very difficult to do in GTA IV because of LC's close quarters and traffic) and it makes the map A LOT less akward. Compare: INFINITE TERRAIN & INFINITE OCEAN INFINITE OCEAN AROUND ISLAND See, those maps are roughly the same size and have the same towns and the same variety. But the map with land is less akward and more like real California. Desert might even be easier to generate than the ocean, and the mountains would probably be pretty easy so long as they are just forests and hills. But as long as there aren't impassible mountains, I'll be cool with whatever R* does. D T

It looks more real and believable. I think having Los Santo/Angeles become an island is just stupid. It should be surrounded by infinite ocean/mountains/desert/forest. jbte
How about something like this: If you go straight north into the infinite desert (by car or plane etc) you will end to into south direction to the main area, the same if you go from LS straight to the ocean after some miles you'll see LS again in the same direction. Another idea would be a small planet But the problem with this is the curvature and lack of perfective Edited September 18, 2012 by jbte
