Is this Take 2 Future?

So I'm a bit confused. Borderlands 2 was released in stores and on PSN digitally. I guess it's coming to xbox digitally next week or something. I've never seen a day 1 digital release like that for both stores and online, is this the future? I hope so I'm tired of swapping discs for big titles. Please discuss...

Yeah, the future will be selling games in "normal" retailers and online retailers like for example Steam. In some statements of the companies they said the won't stop selling games in "normal" retailers.

Didn't that also happen with New Super Mario Brothers 2?

and Max Payne 3?

And yes, it is the future. Clearly you haven't heard of a nifty program that has already been mentioned here.

Pfff, I guess you never heard of Steam. Yes digital releases are future.

I'm talking about for consoles though, Isn't steam for PC user only?

I'll miss retailers and game boxes.

Don't worry, dude. Just because online retailers are part of the future, it doesn't mean that standard retailers will close - they won't. EA already talked about this and they said by themselves that they won't stop shipping games to shop retailers.

Meh I prefer digital.

For example, BL2 I was able to pre-load 3 days in advance to release and last night at midnight I was able to unlock the game and play it. No hassle and no waiting in a store. Hopefully they do go digital but I understand that not everyone wants this because they like having a case and just the physical copy of the game in their hands.

Yes for me its steam or nothing. Im the type of guy who misplaces stuff alot. I bought gta 4 5 times just because i lost so many discs until the 5th time i just went f*ck it and bought via steam. Now every game i buy on pc must have steam or other popular client integration so i will not lose it

Kinda, you get to try out both digitally and retail. Not every company will do what Borderlands/Max Payne 3/Battlefield 3/GTA IV did but it's not a bad idea

If it's not too much work, I think it would be cool to buy the game at retail with the download code in the box to satisfy both parties.

Down with digital downloads, where's the excitement in waiting for something like GTAV to appear on an online store? As long as hard copy games are always available I'm happy.

Gee, wait like a c*nt in line until 12am to get a new game, or download it at home.

I think I'll take the latter.

Although I really like steam, it's easy to buy a game and play it after the download is complete, but when I'm holding my PS3 boxes, I get a more satisfying feeling than just booting a game on my computer from the steam menu. I hope they don't stop the physical copies, I still want that city map.

A Disc is more trustworthy than a digital download, and always will be no matter what year it is.

Anyway back on topic, i hope not.

Oh and downloading a game from steam or whatever digital way of a game is the lazy way of playing games, and nothing is better than buying the game from your local trustworthy game shop on the day of release, and opening the box only to smell the greatness of a brand new game

The term "digital" is very misleading. You see, the data that is burned onto the disc at the pressing plant is already digital in every sense of the word. It's the exact same thing as DVD, just a different format. The correct term is "virtual". I don't have a problem with online downloads, but I just want their sites/software to be stable and reliable. I also DEMAND a way to make backups of my games on DVD-DATA disks with minimal copy-protection bullsh*t.

Online downloads are also vulnerable to bandwidth constraints imposed by your internet connection and server overload, more so than a retail store is overloaded by hundreds of trampling store goers.

Digital release is best for both parties. For example on Steam:

- Developers get 70% of your money and Steam gets 30%. While on physical releases they don't get even half as much.

- Customers can pre-order with just a few clicks.

- Customers can pre-load the game ~1 day before release so they don't have to download it after official release date.

- Customers can get to play the game in the first minute after official release.

Yeah, but this is for PC users. I don't think my GTX 560 will run GTA V. We'll have to see.

Steam is huge on PC now. Next-gen consoles will probably steal the idea anyway, because it's really profitable for everyone...execept the guys who fabricate the CD's and boxes.

It's nothing new and physical media will always be relevant. Personally I hate digital only games and even DLC for many reasons.

Note this is for consoles only.

I'd rather swap disks for games and have a physical copy than:

- Wait for ages for the game to download (Yes my internet it sh*t like most of the UK)

- Pay for a game that I'll never own - Can't trade in if sh*t, lend to family or friends and so on.

- No box - I love art and love artwork on game covers. The back of the box is a good read and the manual at times is great to read while on the bog. Plus Dat smell of new games.

- Paying more for a game - Due to there been no second hand sales. Buying a game pre owned for a cheaper price would not happen. Although I'm aware they have "sales".

- Retailers would loose there jobs - No retail games means there isn't any need for a retailer as much as there is now so jobs will be lost.

- Look at PSP Go and see how well that did.

- This gives more control to the devlopers - They can charge what they what for whatever they want and aint a darn thing you can do about it.

- No try before you buy - Can't test the game to see if you like it by renting.

- If your console brakes you'll have to download everything again. This would be a pain in the ass.

Just like Movies and music retail will not die out completely when it comes to games and it certainly will not be the way I game. Releasing both digital and retail copys is the way to go.

I'm downloading Max Payne 3 on PS3.

Only problem being it has yet to actually download. I really hope this isn't the future on consoles.

The convenience of downloading through an onlie service is definitely a lot easier than burning gas in my car + the time it takes to get there.

I know Steam is very cheap and has a lot of deals and good prices, however I own consoles. IMO, if I buy a game virtually, the price should automatically be lowered, because it should be cutting out the middle-man known as the retailer. However I don't know if this is the case. Until I see a significant price drop in virtual downloads from day 1 release compared to physical copy, I'd rather pay the same price and actually have something in my hands. Especially a game like GTA with the booklet and city map, etc etc.

I completely agree of what you have said, and CD is still the future of gaming and not downloading games.

And with buying games etc from a retailer is alot better and saves their jobs being taken over by digital copy of games.
