Red Dead Redemption vs. Grand Theft Auto IV

As I eagerly anticipate (understatement of the year) GTA V, I cannot stop myself playing RDR and GTA IV - particularly as, environmentally speaking, I feel V will be a combination of both.

 

However I cannot help compare them both. I'd like to gauge others thoughts on the two.

 

If this topic has been done before (I'm sure it has) but I cannot find one with the search function.

Both.

Red Dead Redemption is better on a technical level obviously because it got released 2 years after IV, but GTA IV is also a masterpiece, i love both game and i can't choose, but if i had to choose i would say GTA IV is slightly better imo.

 

Who is the better protagonist and why?

Niko Bellic/John Marston.

John is more badass, but i like Niko slightly more, only slightly.

 

Which has the greater storyline and why?

Both.

Red Dead Redemption's story had a better pacing though, there was more filler missions in IV, i like longer stories but i hate missions that don't fill a purpose.

 

Which has the better map and why?

Red Dead Redemption.

It was just more varied and had more beautiful scenery, GTA IV's Liberty City was really detailed too.

 

Which has the greater features and why?

Both. (If You count Episodes From Liberty City)

 

Overall - which do you prefer?

Both.

Both are one of the best games this gen imo, both are masterpieces, and i still play both to this day, if i had to choose i would say GTA IV was slightly (only slightly) better.

Who is the better protagonist and why?- Niko is my favourite gta protagonist but john john marston is much better on every level.

 

Which has the greater storyline and why?- I never liked the iv story, an immagrant trying to get rich. Rdr had much better storyline, his trying to capture his former friends that betrayed him to save his family.

 

Which has the better map and why?- This is so obvious, rdr and i dont need to give a reason except to say just play the game and you will know after 10 mins of playing, rdrs map is so amazing. Liberty city- dark and dull.

 

Which has the greater features and why?- Rdr had much more features and so much stuff to do, iv had great features but it cant match rdr

 

Overall - which do you prefer?- Red dead redemption is better on all levels but gta iv is still a great game. When you compare rdr and gta iv the real winner is rockstar

I think that Niko feels more in depth and has a better backstory, he also was way more badass and was willing to go to extreme lengths.

GTA IV, like Niko it seems more in depth than Red Dead. They went more into the backstory than the current story which I think was really good.

There's no comparison really. They are both completely different and aiming for different things and I think to be honest it's like comparing apples to oranges.

Definitely Red Dead Redemption, although it didn't have the stuff San Andreas did, either did GTA 4. Rockstar San Diego obviously did really well with puting in similar things though. Especially with the game mode where you follow the dog around killing people (can't remember the name)

GTA IV.

I just can't choose what game do I prefer the most. I love the storyline, gameplay, features, and everything that R* has to offer on the two games.

I would have to prefer John Marston for the fact that the Redemption storyline best replicates of a person who wanted to protect and save his family, and also to hunt and kill all of his friends who were now sworn enemies. Although this storyline is somewhat similar to GTA IV, still Redemption was able to deliver the perfect storyline.

This is kind of hard! I don't know which one is to choose. Guess I'll have to go both of them, as R* always deliver the best storyline they can give. No doubt that most of R*'s games are as perfect in terms of storyline and gameplay.

All games are different in terms of setting. Both settings are large and diverse in terms of number of places, people and others. So there is nothing too choose at all.

 

 

Which has the greater features and why?

 

Redemption has the best features of all. Some of it's feature were incorporated from both the gameplay and storyline, for example John lassoing a criminal or some innocent civies. I really don't like the features in GTA IV wherein they haven't incorporated many features in GTA San Andreas and it's just not fair!

 

 

Overall - which do you prefer?

 

Red Dead Redemption wins via unanimous vote! Event though GTA IV has the worst features and others, still it is such a great game, and I'm proud that I am a R* fan!

I can't say which one I prefer because I love them both equally. Niko and John are so awesome I can't pick one or the other.

 

In regards to the maps GTA IV done an amazing modern interpretation of NYC and RDR done an amazing interpretation of the dying American West/Mexico.

Marston, Niko was a stock anti-hero, he had no personality traits other than the couple times he felt remorse for killing some people. Sure he helped his cousin, and cried at the end of the game, but none of his emotions really got through. John on the other hand quite obviously cared about his family, and he chose what he thought was right to do most of the time. Also John Marston kind of reminds me of Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop, so he's automatically a favorite character of mine.

GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption's story felt weird, like you were thrown into his life just to get Dutch. The character's kept talking about John's back-story, but all I got is that he was an asshole, and his asshole gang left him to die once so he got pissed off and betrayed them. In GTA IV there is less of a story, but it at least felt like a real story, I can't really explain it, maybe I just disliked RDR's story.

 

Which has the better map and why?

 

Red Dead Redemption, people always like to criticize its lack of busyness, it's just one stretch of Texas/Mexico, and it's supposedly boring. GTA IV is the exact same way, except with city, if anyone's ever actually explored Liberty City they probably understand that there is absolutely nothing to do in most of the city. Texas is at least beautiful.

RDR, I didn't like the execution of a lot of the features, but in RDR you could do most of what you could do in IV, and more. Shooting was a lot more fun in GTA IV though, despite the lack of dead eye (which in my opinion sucks, because it made me good at shooting, which is usually a sign that shooting is too easy.)

 

Overall - which do you prefer?

 

This sounds cheesy, but it's a tie, I should prefer RDR because all in all, I think it's the better game, but the time I've spent with GTA IV makes me like it better.

Red Dead Redemption, it's a western game and you meet IMO funnier and more interesting charcters than in GTA 4, I just fell into the whole revenge and fighting for your family thing more than in GTA 4.

Red Dead Redemption, GTA 4's map has no countryside, less colorfull, Red Dead Redemptions map is just beatiful and really realistic, piece of art.

Red Dead Redemption, first of all: minigames, spent lots of hours playing poker and second of all: random shootouts, better quests for strangers... GTA 4 on the other hand has jobs for Little Jacob, races for Brucie etc... but I really enjoyed RDR's features more, I have nothing against dead eye and it was all more complete than GTA IV IMO.

Who is the better protagonist and why? - John Marston for sure. He was semi-illiterate, had a very small family, and he was a super badass outlaw before the story takes place. Niko was a good boy that got dragged into a war. IDGAF

 

Which has the greater storyline and why? - Red Dead Redemption. It was an awesome sequel to Revolver plus Rockstar did a fantastic job recreating the old west. John lost his life in the end, and you continue his legacy as his son, John Jack Marston Jr.

 

Which has the better map and why? - GTA IV. The map was larger and had places you can only reach by boat or helicopter. RDR had a great map, as it included Mexico and a northern part of America (West of Blackwater, it snows). But GTA IV was a very good recreation of New York.

 

Which has the greater features and why? - Red Dead Redemption. Hunting, Bounty Hunting, gang hideouts, etc.

 

Overall - which do you prefer? - Red Dead Redemption.

Theres bias everywhere - would be the same on a RDR forum of course.

 

I ask it here because both are (essentially) GTA games on this generation the current technology. I feel many of the things introduced in IV were improved on in RDR.

 

A lot of people on here are anti-IV so it interesting to see if they are anti-IV for reasons other than it "not being San Andreas" if that makes sense .
