Big_Mitch_Baker
I think it's a mix of GTAs continued rise in popularity, and the fact R* gave us a trailer then vanished for months on end. Anyways, on topic, the reason people are so impatient this time around is because of lack of information. This wasn't the case before with SA or VC. People were getting timely updates on the game and there wasn't a lot of time between the start of the marketing campaign, regular updates (screenshots, trailers, etc.) and the game release. As much as I think it's a terrible and manipulative marketing scheme, it seems to be working. The more you deny the fans what they want, the more frenzied they become. Yes, plus this thought: Rockstar's daft and incomprehensible marketing, with the release of the GTAV Trailer and months without any follow-up, is responsible for this mess. The market reaction is a force of nature. Just like the whole market buying or not buying the game is a force of nature, made up of millions of individual decisions to spend hard-earned money for a product (GTAV), or not. Like water flowing to the sea. It's one and the same - Rockstar can't have a manic fanbase that will give them over a billion dollars in 6 months, without also having the pent-up emotion that is now manifesting itself as pressure and frustration. You are seeing it being played out. All you superior know-it-alls can sit at your keyboards and tell us how stupid the human race is for acting like this. Doesn't matter. Rockstar opened Pandora's box, and even after months, apparently has no idea how to control it or make positive use of it. Their fault. Think about that. When the release is near then you'll love Rockstar again. Don't worry. All fans that say the lose respect for Rockstar will have respect again and even love Rockstar for making the best game that they have ever made. How did you feel after GTA IV was announced and we got 10 months absolutely nothing? GTA V was announced and we had a trailer within a week. GTA IV was announced with a little logo and a release date that was originally 17 months away, then delayed by another 6 months. Well if a strategy that results in a huge amount of fans losing respect for their company is a marketing move that works brilliantly, I sure am living in a back to front world. Or maybe you're just a back to front guy? Because it is a great marketing move, marketing isn't about becoming best friends with your customers, it's about getting result. If pissing a few people off gets results, you do it. I doubt fans will 'lose their respect' or something that dramatic, either... they're just angry for a bit because they haven't got anything better to do at the moment. @cookpassbabtridge: yeah... IF this is the strategy they're going with there will be a media blowout in the weeks up to release, else it won't work. I know it's quite unique for videogame marketing, but a lot of other products are marketed that way.. and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than the traditional way of doing it. CookPassBabtridge
@theworldfamous: I remain unconvinced this is any strategy tbh. I think it points to internal delay, and perhaps there wasnt too much of a backup plan marketing-wise. Maybe October was the original release month, and something went amiss, and shunted the marketing plans into next year.
JaggySnake
Everyone who is demanding GTA V info on their newswire, facebook, twitter, youtube etc need to be taught that no matter how much you kick and scream you don't always get what you want when you want it. They need to learn some patience. When the trailer came out I thought "There won't be any new info for months so I'm not going to bother checking every day for something." I did that and it was 6 months before I started really checking. In those 6 months I did do the odd search for GTA V when I was bored but I wasn't haunting forums, Facebook/Twitter/YouTube profiles. I couldn't believe it, when I joined these forums in May (under a different username), how fast time went by. I felt that there had to be some new info coming soon. It was July before we got anything. 2 month wait is better than 8 months of waiting. Between May & August 24th I was on these forums nearly every day waiting for more info. I haven't really been active the last few weeks compared to the last few months. I have been busy with other things in my life and the time is going a lot faster. If people weren't glued to the computer every day all day then it would go faster. I don't mean that in a bad way, I love the internet! But the truth is that if you hang on every second or minute waiting for something, it'll drag in. Go do something else and before you know it you'll get what you're waiting for
jamieleng
Unfortunately it's the current climate of "To be heard, you have to constantly make noise". I also think developers should share part of the blame by giving 'fans' a voice & saying their input is valued NEWSFLASH! Most of the time it isn't. As a fan of the GTA franchise, I want to play the game Rockstar have created. As fans we don't own the franchise, as consumers we don't own the franchise. Rockstar, Take-Two & Zee owns the GTA franchise. Everyone applauds Valve for going against the grain & they didn't even deliver a game that was promised to the fans. Maybe October was the original release month, and something went amiss, and shunted the marketing plans into next year. Yeah, I think that too. Rockstar have never announced the release date of the game so as long as the delay is within the fiscal year so for example from October 2012 to March 2013, then nobody would mind it. It's very possible that TakeTwo don't have expect too much because they wanted to be on the safe side. What do I mean with "safe side"? For the case that the release would have been October 2012, TakeTwo would have increased their expectations. For the case that the release is in March, the expectations will stay untouched. It's a simple way to safe the patience and confidence from fans and stockholders. The disappointment would be higher if they would have announced the release date and then delay it officially. In this case it's better to talk little than too much. Rockstar can do this only with their biggest game series so Grand Theft Auto because people know what to expect. This would be suicide for a new IP like Agent. This isn't a problem for GTA. Rockstar, Take-Two & Zee owns the GTA franchise. LMAO. Smith John
@Carl CJ Johnsons Brother Brian + theworldfamous Why do you guys insist on repeating the same old sh*t all the time? "as soon as you get info, you'll love R* again" Your begininning to sound like parrots! R* released some screens a few weeks ago. Did that change my attitude? Did it f*ck. -YES when we finally get a release date, I'll like them a little better -YES I'll be purchasing the game despite all this unnecessary bullsh*t -YES the game, like other GTAs, will be mind blowing But am I going to think twice about any future R* titles? You better f*cking believe it. No matter how great the game is, I'm never going to forget this. Others have clearly stated this feeling also. (no, not 10 year old kids ) So yes, you might say this is a successful marketing strategy for V, (I sure as sh*t don't), but is it such a success if many loyal fans abandon them in the long run for what they perceive to be nothing short of arrogance? I don't think so fellas. I have been a very loyal fan of R* since '97, having played GTA 1 for the PC when I was 12 years old, and have been addicted to GTA since, buying every GTA bar Chinatown Wars. Yet I have never experienced anything like this. 'Ispintechno' put it perfectly in the 'Rockstar silence' thread, if you care to look it up. So, if wielding my entitled right as a consumer - a very loyal consumer at that - to vent my anger, frustration and criticism to a company whose products I have PAID FOR, for the last 15 years makes me some "whiney, unpatient kid", then yes, I do live in a pretty back to front, corporate arse-licking world. bash the fash m8s

Andreas
@niko bellic half brother: Again, how did you feel after GTA IV was announced in May 2006 and we didn't have anything than a little goddamn logo and a release date which was delayed by a half year and this for 10 whole months? I don't understand what your problem is. As you say you're a loyal Rockstar fan and as a loyal fan you should know that all games from Rockstar are and will be mind-blowing. My opinion: If the quality of the product is true and if everything is perfect (like every game from Rockstar!) then I don't give a f*ck about the marketing campaign.
