H. León
I wanted to know about the map theory wich I have seen in very much fan-made maps, a theory wich stated there will be infinite sea in the west and south, and vertically "infinite" mountains in north and east. Where did it came from? I also wanted to discuss if you guys would like the map to be like this. IMO I wouldn't like it, it would be kind of claustrophobic . Choco Taco
It will probably be infinite sea in all directions again. However, it's possible that it could be a combination of infinite sea and infinite land. That could work well and I would actually prefer that. By vertically infinite mountains, do you mean mountains so high that you can't go over them? That wouldn't be good for gameplay and most people wouldn't like that. H. León
@Choco Taco yeah, that's what I meant, I don't think it's a good idea but I have seen that theory in so many places...
36Chambers
Infinite sea all around is what I am hoping for. Nearly all GTA's had it. And while infinite land might be a possibility, I just feel as if that isn't the direction Rockstar would go.

dooshtoomun
Hell no! I don't want to be blocked off by mountains that are supposedly 'too high' to go over. I'd rather infinite sea one side, and possibly infinite desert on the other. It would be more interesting if the mountain was somewhere around the middle of the map, and a desert setting on the outer edges, so there can be an infinite desert, which will act like the infinite sea. TheGodDamnMaster
It's possible to have both if a coastline is utilized. flat land takes few resources to render than sea does, so it's very possible on a technical level. I would like to see that utilized. At least on infinite land you're not limited to just boats and swimming. unikunjerry
i would like infinite water. it would also be cool if like you go from the south, and maybe fly for fifteen minutes you will find yourself at the north edge of the game world, like in some really old arcade games. cuz sometimes you accidentally get yourself really far from the shore, and get your plane wrecked there is no way back except dying or reloading a saved game. this would solve that problem. JaggySnake
I hope the map isn't just an island in the middle an infinite ocean. I hated that about the previous maps. When you're up in a helicopter it looks stupid and really breaks immersion. That's just my opinion though. With Los Angeles you can do the left side of the map with water because, you know, theres the pacific ocean there. All the other sides can be restricted by mountains/desert. I hate it when in games you walk into an invisible wall. I think they should do this for the ocean/desert: make it feel like we're flying/sailing across the ocean or walking across the desert but when you turn around to head back to the map you haven't really moved that far (I think they did this in GTA III but could be wrong). meson1
Previous GTA games: GTA:III - invisible non-damaging resistive barriers a short distance from shore plus land too steep to climb on the third island. GTA:VC - islands in ocean with invisible non-damaging re-directional barriers a short distance from shore. GTA:SA - islands in infinite traversable ocean. GTA:IV - islands in an apparently infinite traversable ocean. Though if you do stray too far from shore, you die and respawn at the nearest hospital. The chances are that GTA:V will feature island(s) in an infinite ocean just as in SA and IV. I'd like there to be infinite land to the North, East and South of the main playing area. There are a few ways to dynamically generate such land which I'd have thought would be within the capabilities of the current gen consoles. But I don't think it'll happen. I think we'll get infinite ocean because it's simple and it's proven.
initium
In no trailer or screenshot, we've seen even a glimpse of mountains so high that we can't fly over them... so it won't happen
jamieleng
I was originally against this, but a no fly zone could be a better choice than infinite land. The land would look pretty basic compared to the intricately crafted & highly detailed main map, whereas the sea looks pretty much the same everywhere. I'm guessing it would have to be procedurally generated & that would be endless miles of desert or scrubland.. There could be a huge military installation surrounded by testing ground that stretches for miles, which would bring the full might of the army & air force if you try to enter it. It would also explain where the fighter jet(s) & other military vehicles come from, if they're in the game at all. It would also be fun to see how long you could last & how far you could get before being blown to pieces. It could also create loads of rumours of a mythical city called San Fierro or Las Ventures, that lies beyond this 'no go zone'.

Spider-Vice
I'm thinking it'll be around ocean as always, the big mountains will be at like middle of the map and so, and there will be beaches or cities with coasts all around. europeanbob
In regards the "where from" - I think from the reddit leaks. The leaker there was adamant that the restrictions on the player were of a new type, and that were less intrusive than in previous games. It's conceivable that there will be a new conceit in this regard - canyons, no-fly zones, etc. - but there seems to be a lot of energy expended on a topic which doesn't really affect the gameplay much. Personally I quite like the idea of a big island with no actual edge.
artificialguy
I really hope that map will be shown soon. It should be reaveled part after the part on the website, as Rockstar did with SA map.
RockStarNiko
I don't want an infinite ocean all around that makes Los Santos an island. I think it would be cool to have infinite ocean to the west, infinite forest to the north or east, infinite mountains to the north or east and infinite desert to the south which would begin just over the mexican border. It would work just the same as infinite ocean where once you reach the "edge" the landscape just starts repeating. Who really can tell the difference beteen a load of trees or a load of sand? For the mountains you need to acheive a certain altitude before you can start to pass over them, but when you do you are up in the clouds and visibility is poor. So really it would become infinite SKY
Stoic Intrusion
there will be no infinite land!...It will be a water barrier again unless they landlock it with an invisible wall which i doubt. No-fly Zone? well maybe when you cross the line your plane will be attacked with rockets and thats it (i doubt it). anyhow infinite land is simply not possible on current gen consoles unless you want the land to look crappy like ps1. No not just SAM's but fighter jets & attack helicopters if you enter by air. Basically an all out assault on you that's impossible to defeat or run from, a theoretical 7 star wanted level. Why is infinite land not possible? After a certain point the scenery would just start to repeat and repeat over and over again. It is no more unrealistic than making Los Santos an island with infinite ocean surrounding it. Forests and deserts are very large and do take time to cross They could also use this infinite repeating scenery to their advantage and include secret hidden schacks and hidden military bases and ghost towns etc The secret area would be not on the map, but once the scenery repeats a certain amount of times you will discover it
Magic_Al
The GTA world being fictional should take care of complaints of unrealism with infinite water. I don't see Rockstar accepting generated terrain as a boundary. That's just not their style. We've already seen how they handle this problem. If the game includes flying, the world is an island. The same people are in charge and there's no reason to think they'd change this.
JoeJoeMcTwist
infinite water would be the easy option but Infinite land would be something different and new - especially if there are secrets in it, that would be wicked

Yes a desert looks pretty much the same all over but water does look the same all over. I'm sure whatever R* decides on will be the best option.
