We've seen how weapon selection has been handled GTAIV, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3. I chose to compare those three titles because even though each game is unique, they all have elements that make a third person action / shooter.

GTAIV utilized left and right on the d-pad to select weapons, and allowed you to carry a single weapon from every class with a huge stockpile of ammunition. Red Dead Redemption introduced the weapon wheel, in which you could carry and select any and every weapon featured in the game. Max Payne 3 on the other hand limited you to 3 weapons. Two single handed weapons and one two handed weapon which was not concealable but you had the option of dropping it.

POLL QUESTION: Which of the three weapon selection methods did you find most appealing? explain.

How do you think weapon selection should be handled in GTAV? (doesn't necessarily have to be one of the three)

Well, we definitely can't be limited to two or three weapons like in Max Payne 3. GTA is an open world game, not a linear shooter. Between GTA IV and RDR's weapon selection, RDR's is far more intuitive so I'll have to go with that.

Red dead redemptions weapon wheel was amazing, the best thing about it was you were not limited to only one of each weapon type wherever you were, you could always change to a different weapon of the same type on the spot. Although this could make GTA a little too easy I still wouldn't mind having the weapon wheel as it would be much easier to swap from a pistol to an assault rifle, rather than having to press a button repeatedly to cycle through all the weapons you currently hold.

Red Dead Redemption by miles. The weapon wheel was buttery-smooth and lightning fast for weapon swapping. Going back to GTA 4 and using the scrolling method feels REALLY outdated.

And as for that nonsense about it being a "tradition" to scroll weapons. Why would you sacrifice gameplay coherency for nostalgia? Remember what R* said about a bold new direction? Maybe they were referring to "out with the old, in with the new" and weapon selection is one of the things being refined.

The style of weapon selection in RDR and MP3 are exactly the same and I wouldn't be surprised if R* continues to use it because it works so well. The amount of weapons you can carry is a completely different issue.

I definitely want a weapon wheel, and I want it to be very realistic like MP3, but I also want the ability to carry a bag for more weapons and the ability to store weapons in cars like LA Noire.

I really liked the way Max Payne 3 handled it and hope something similar is put into V. This system gave a sense of desperateness to the gun fights. You weren't always loaded to the tits with guns and ammo. You had to take what you could scrounge up and use it. You had to be smart with your ammo usage in certain situations.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be limited to 3 weapons, but also don't want to have a whole gun catalog of weapons to choose from. I liked Max Payne's because it was simple, manageable, and realistic.

edit:

@BlackNoise - RDR and MP3 were similar, but I'm not just talking about the wheel. I'm talking about weapon selection in its entirety. Design, limitations etc..

I'd like a weapon wheel. But I wouldn't mind if they stuck with GTA's traditional method either. The main thing is the aiming; I can't wait to see Max Payne 3's aiming in GTA. It's gonna be great.

I didn't like it in IV, when you had any weapon pulled from your armpit, and having almost infinite ammo for a pistol(1470, as far as I remember). MP3's system was fine, but it needs an upgrade for an open world game. Having 1-2 small weapons in your pants(gansta style) or in a holster, and maybe a back holster for a hunting rifle(google it). Storing weapons in the back of the car should be in for sure, if they won't allow you to carry big guns anywhere, like it was in Man in Black, where they had an arsenal in the trunk. Maybe a case for storing a sniper rifle(hitman style) for some missions.

Fair enough.

I voted for MP3 style. When I played that game I had to think about what weapons to choose for certain situations, and many times I would go back and grab a weapon I previously left behind. It's surprising how much those choices can make a difference in a linear game like MP3. I would love to see that system used in GTA.

For me SA had the best weopons, Maxpayne was great but you could only use weopons lke the rocket launcher once, I never played RDR though

I prefer the scrolling that we have seen in the past games not because it is "traditional" but it doesn't pop up smack dab in the middle of the screen like in RDR and MP3. Plus, once you get used to the weapon slots, it really isn't as difficult as some say it is to get to the weapon you want.

But hey, maybe that's just me.

I just bought RDR GOTY edition & I'm playing through Undead Nightmare for the first time. Does anyone know if the ability to change the weapon types by pressing left/right on the d-pad via the weapon wheel available in the original vanilla version?

This is what it seems like:

GTA IV: The Traditional Option

Red Dead Redemption: The Quick Option

Max Payne 3: The Realistic Option

I would much rather the traditional GTA weapon select. I don't need anything fancy like a weapon wheel and it's actually quote easy to just remember the order of your weapons, most people don't seem to get this though.

I prefer the traditional option: the weapon select + the quick select option (RB + d-pad) for the 4 most used categories. An RDR weapon wheel is fidgety and intrudes on the gamescreen, and Max Payne's alternative too limited for an open world game.

It's the opposite of the chocolate version. No seriously, the original release of RDR & not the GOTY version. Like the original GTA IV & not the version that comes with the EFLC edition. They tend to make minor adjustments & fix bugs in GOTY versions.

Old school GTA scrolling. After all, this is GTA 5, not RDR 3 or MP4.

Max Payne 1 and 2 both had weapon selection like the GTA games. RDR was the first game to introduce the wheel, then it was refined in MP3. Even though some people still like the old system I just don't see it making a return. It would be a step backwards to simply do away with the more practical wheel and go back to the old tedious system.

Some people use the argument that you just have to memorize the number order of the weapons. This doesn't always apply as that order changes depending on how many weapons your carrying at a time. The old system will most likely be scrapped because it made you focus on selecting too long instead of a quick: hold - thumb movement - release.

Some people just don't like change, but some things shouldn't. I don't want regenerating health from RDR but would like to be able to carry a couple of stimpacks (or GTA equivalent). Just so I don't have to go running off in the middle of a firefight to look for a vending machine, hot dog stand etc.

Being able to access all weapons via a weapon wheel (like RDR not MP3) would make experimenting with different weapons, in different situations, easier & more fun. Then again I like having to choose a suitable weapon set, before I start a mission.

Remembering seems like such a fiend-ish thing to do, i dont want to remember how many times I have to click left or right on the D-pad to select a weapon, and im pretty sure R* realized this cuz as you have seen in there other games they have gone with the weapon wheel option in both RDR and MP3 so I really wouldnt expect it to be any different in GTA V

If ppl get all butthurt over the fact that R* changed such and insignificant feature such as the way you select a weapon then that say something is wrong with the community that plays this game cuz really why should it matter, Me personally, I dont care if they choose to bring back the wheel or the traditional but if i had a choice as to what i'd rather use it be the weapon wheel cuz it make for easier and more efficient access to your weapons if seems alot more organized to IMO

I like RDR's weapon selection system, mainly because of the weapon wheel and having your weapons organized by type.

THAT IS THE MOST IRRITATING ARGUMENT EVERRRRRRRR.....

i think thats what people say when they dnt have a valid argument....

but i like the mp3 weapon selection i just like the realistic feel and it wasnt over the top it was just right

and we should be able to put weapons in cars that we own ONLY so that they save that would be cool

I voted the traditional way. It wouldn't feel the same if it weren't that way.
