I forget what the link is to the article, but someone posted a link not too long ago where it stated Rockstar didn't have to do any marketing, and it's true. Just look at these forums. The talk is huge every day, and we look for any sliver of information to spread the word that we got new updates. Rockstar knows the community is going to buy this game, and they don't have to spend a penny in marketing.

That being said, I'm just as eager as the next guy for new information!

I don't think anyone on here should be talking about getting girls

Seconded. Particularly if we are talking about how a media silence for a video game has affected us in some profound way.

The worst part about the whole process is not lack of information about GTAV, it's lack of communication or caring from R* at any level. Yeah lots of you are blabbing "stop being a spoiled little brat", yadayada, but your mostly a noob who is just recently interested in the whole game. We waited for the first trailer with great patients and then where let down over what felt like an eternity and was still a staggering chunk of a year of silence like we where some revolting evil ginger kid that shoots fires out of our penises.

It would not "wreck the surprise" if we had acknowledgements to the fans waiting during this time instead of banning and ignoring the fans and pretending GTAV didn't exist.

It still would not "wreck the game" to know what console systems we can expect the game to release on.

It would not "wreck the game" to know what year it will hit the shelf.

Their silence certainly hurt them as a company and their profits as the pissed off said f*ck You Max Payne. I too went out of my way to not buy Max Payne 3 as I didn't like the way R* treats it's paying customers. If you feel this is childish, go f*ck yourself too. I have a right as a consumer to tolerate or to not tolerate certain business conduct and put my money where my mouth is (even back in my wallet). Unless R* becomes more chatty in the future, GTAV is the only certain purchase left out of me they have. I like R* games but despise R* policy and marketing.

So many people are indeed butthurt because they have hugely ignorant public relations. Who the f*ck can't say a little something when they clearly are getting thousands of questions and fan mails per day. Just a whopper of asshat up in that place. Imagine anyone else getting so much fan attention on such a massive scale and choosing to be a total dick about it.

What would be a total wet dream to one company was a bother and an annoyance to R*. That is the problem I have with the whole silence thing.

Also no matter how busy this forum is, it's not self marketing. This forum represents less than 1% of GTA gamers, or potential gamers. The theory of self marketing is asinine.

The hype. By now with all the hype we have built we're basically expecting this to be the greatest game ever and we're definitely treating it like it will be.

Yep, about sums it up. Companies depend on us fans, I know I will laugh and laugh listening to the next investor meeting from T2. R* is going to make about half of what they should have this year, all thanks to the way they acted in 2012. MP3 did sh*tty and R* had the attention of millions of gamers. If they had gotten off their high horse and did a little public relations to the millions of GTA fans asking questions, Max Payne 3 would have been a smashing success. That game felt too forced on us and unwanted as it was the answer to a question nobody asked. I would have bought MP3 around launch but I was too pissed. Still won't touch it until GTAV is released, if ever. I honestly don't feel I missed anything as other games have come out. Sleeping Dogs was a good story and ride BTW. Filled the gap for me nicely. If I didn't see all the awesome marketing of smashing people into objects around you I might have overlooked that one!

I think a lot of people were surprised by the lack of buzz from the last 12 screens. R* has went about it all wrong. Had they spoon-fed us 1 screen per week, it would've worked better than just overkill. They don't have a good marketing team at all. If nothing comes by next friday, then we know that we're in for another drought of info, and I'm sure it will just increase peoples anger towards them. I think R* has lost a lot of respect from fans this time around and they will probably never recover from that. I know next GTA, I will wait a while before I start lusting after it.

Stop, just stop. Of course R* has an awesome marketing team, they have been successful for this long. I don't see you working at R* games as head of marketing so shush!!!

If I were working in Rockstar marketing, I would be giving you guys trailers and screens every week and actively participating in fan forums. I would make fans ecstatic with info. Maybe I should apply there before they run the company into the ground....

If you were in charge of marketing then Rockstar would become just like most other game companies out there. Sure, this wait is rather frustrating but I understand why they are doing it because they have said so themselves. It's because they don't want to spoil the game for anyone.

So how is it that they put out a flood of info about Max Payne 3? Did they do that just to ruin the surprise and therefore ruin MP3's sales?

Well, acutally it worked I guess, since the MP3 sales were not all that good. So I guess you are right; Rockstar should have put out one MP3 trailer 18 months before the game, and a few random screenshots. Then MP3 probably would have sold 20 million copies. Man, did Rockstar blow it. I am glad they learned their lesson, and are now starving us for GTAV info.

Max Payne did not sell as well as GTA because GTA is by far more popular. In fact I bet if Rockstar did starve people for info on MP3 like they are doing to us now for GTAV it would have only hurt their sales even more. GTAV's marketing technique works because it's arguably the most hyped game of the past 5 years.

I like it. We may hate it now, but when we actually play the game, we'll be thankful as the 'fresh' experience wouldn't have been spoiled.

Yeah. I wouldn't mind this form of marketing at all if they gave us a release date and release platforms (if PC releases at the same time) because I actually would like to know as little as possible so I find it all out for myself. But the thing is not everyone thinks like that and they do want information before they buy this game.

There's hardcore fans like us on this forum who are for the most part very hyped and hang on R*'s every word and then there is people outside this forum that the marketing must reach and they are failing.

Maybe they don't want to give a release date because they are not sure it's gonna meet the deadline and it's going to be delayed again like GTA IV . Have you ever thought about that ?

that has nothing to do with it, actually. It's all about hardware. The xbox is just built like a pc, and the ps3 is very different so it took developers a while to figure out how to tap into it's full potential. Xbox was just easier to figure out cause it used the same basic design as a PC, so if you were a PC developer with limited resources it's easier to get into Xbox development than ps3.

That's why the next gen consoles are BOTH gonna be very similar to PC's.

Well, if that's true - this game isn't even close to be finished. If they aren't certain that they can deliver it in time they decide to tell us, there is a loooot of work to do left, and we'll wait for this even more than ~6 months.

What are you both? 12 years old? It's his opinion, let him have it. Stop riding R*'s dick.

He's not "riding R*'s dick", he says the truth. Every day people complain about how f*cked up Rockstars marketing strategy is or a few people even say they lost respect for Rockstar and then Rockstar release some new info and suddenly exactly the people who complained, love Rockstar again. This marketing strategy is far better than most gaming companies with their gameplay trailers. I agree that it'd be cool if Rockstar would announce the release date and the platforms (especially the release of the PC platform, I'm a PC gamer as well tounge.gif). We at least have a release window from TakeTwo so in this case Q3 or Q4 FY'13. The last screenshots were released 3 weeks ago so we aren't far away from our next piece of info. I hope we'll have our release date soon. smile.gif

Oh, you mean you would spoil out everything from GTA V and try to destroy the experience before the release? THIS^ strategy would suck. Rockstar don't run themselves into the ground. They can make this strategy because they can afford that because the Grand Theft Auto series will be 15 years old this October. People know what to expect. Only hardcore gamer like we're here on GTAForums "suffer" for new info. Casual gamer (more than 90% of the buyer) don't mind this strategy. Rockstar will make a full-blown marketing campaign but they'll start only 4 months before the release or maybe even just 3 months. Who knows. In 6 days you're here since 6 years on GTAForums and maybe you've lurked the forum before and you complain about Rockstar. How did you feel after GTA IV was announced in May 2006 and we only had a release date and a little logo for 10 whole months? It must have been horrible for you.

The problem I have with Rockstar's marketing is, they know everyone is waiting for information, but they don't acqknowledge it.

Why post a trailer in November? and not talk about it for 6 months? Not even one word. This is the timeline of GTAV marketing so far...

1: One week countdown to trailer.

2: Trailer

3: Short synopsis of GTAV.

4: 7 months later, two screenshots revealed unofficially.

5: One month later, Rockstar releases 10 screenshots.

6: TBA - the next batch of information.

We probably have at least 6-9 months before the game even comes out! I call October 2013.

Then, with the screenshots, they barely even address the fans. Only with titles...

Transport

Leisure

Business

Hope you enjoyed this. We will be back with more when we feel like it.

I think GTA V was indeed scheduled for a 2012 release but something went different. It's simple. We don't have a release date, right? Rockstar and TakeTwo knew since May 2011 that GTA V will be released in fiscal year 2013 so March 31st 2013 at latest. GTA V was announced in October 2011 because Rockstar might thought that the release is in 2012 but they just don't have announced the release date so they could just delay the release to early 2013 and nobody would mind it because nobody know what Rockstar thought if it comes to the release. Early 2013 is still in FY'13 so TakeTwo can still expect their high income. It's simple and a well-considered strategy if you think about it more and deeper. wink.gif

They act like they don't care because they really don't -- the game is cancelled.

You know, I already have read some comments from you where you have called them "Cockstar" (like Zee often did) and no the game isn't cancelled because if you think about everything and not just with your heart then you know it's nearly impossible. tounge.gif

I don't think anyone on here should be talking about getting girls

Well, yeah, in some cases that's right. tounge2.gif

How the f*ck does information change your mind about two different games? Max Payne and GTA are totally different.

Anyway, I honestly don't care and it shouldn't affect anyone. After all, we all have more than 1 game to play and besides, it's a video game.

It's just a pity we STILL have to put up with the usual "stop being a spoiled kid"........"just be patient" bullsh*t every single f*cking time we want to vent our fully-entitled frustrations at this arrogant marketing "strategy" of Rockstars.

Wrong, I've been waiting since the announcement and I'm still pretty content with patience. Patience is a skill and apparently you don't have what it takes. Youll find patience once you become a big boy and enter the real world.

You'll learn, in time, that someone's opinion can't be wrong. But I'll just wait for you to 'become a big boy and enter the real world.'

Ispintechno hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned. R* have done a very, very sloppy job at marketing this to their fans. Even a statement confirming 'Marketing will start proper towards the very end of 2012/early 2013' would have sufficed and stopped the forums becoming one big centre of disappointment. Max Payne 3 did interest me but their constant saturation of marketing without even the briefest mention of V in the comments section to their fans has put me off. MP3 felt very forced and still does. Personally I can't wait until R* give up the ghost with that sh*t and get on with marketing V.

And to clarify two points I think people are getting stuck on:

1) Giving us some info about the game (beyond screenshots) does not mean they have to tell us the ending(s) to the storyline or even the protagonists' name. People seem to think that if you didn't like MP3's marketing, you assume V will be exactly the same. I don't want a load of info and video after video of new features/dev diaries; just a small amount of info. I'm sure R* could come up with some things that would keep us entertained and dreaming while having enough really juicy info to give to magazines.

2) We're marketing for GTA V? That is one of the most ludicrous statements I have heard on this forum. We do not provide information to the gaming and general press, we do not produce screenshots and videos and we do not hand out specifications such as release period and platform. What we do here at GTAForums is drive each other completely nuts and get annoyed at all the pointless members starting useless topics everyday.

Those who say we 'self-promote' are completely missing the point. What's the point in preaching to the choir? We've already got the f*cking hymn sheet, we're just waiting for the music to go along with us.

R* marketing have dropped a bollock on this one, there is a strategy, albeit a poorly thought out one.

Here is the thing. We have nothing. This is just your opinion.
