kamil121
Whats up guys. Ill just get straight to the point. I have got myself a 1999 Peugeot 306 1.4 litre as my trusty little daily driver. But im pretty tall and the Pug is kind of too small. Anyways i put up an ad on cars website for it and im looking for a nice replacement. I have found some but two of the cars caught my eye. One of them is a 2002 Alfa Romeo 156 1.6 Twin Spark. A lot of people hate on Alfa's and call them unreliable and very faulty. But i know some people who tell me to go for this car. but i need opinions form mechanics, Alfa Romeo 156 owners etc. Other car is a 2000 Volvo s40 1.6. its a pretty cool car to drive as my friend has one but a 1998 but a lot people say the same thing what they say about Alfa Romeo so once again i need opinions. Just post here about two of these cars and tell me which one would you go for.
Garfield 2
I have found some but two of the cars caught my eye.One of them is a 2002 Alfa Romeo 156 1.6 Twin Spark. Haha, good one. Good luck with getting to work/college on time. If ever. The S40 on the other hand is a good car. I'd rather go for the 1.8, since the 1.6's fuel consumption is higher than that of the 1.8... And you get 122hp on the 1.8.
mr quick
I worked at an Alfa dealership/mechanic for a short period of time, and we only got ONE alfa 156 all the time I worked there. We got FIATs around 4-5 a day, Lancias at 4-5 and other brands at 2-4 a day. The one 156 we had only had a broken headlamp and had an oil change. So I'm saying, from my experience, they're not as unreliable as people would like them to be
Sup3rman
Exactly, if there is something wrong with an Alfa then you are a lazy person who doesn't take care of his car... Besides, a 156 has got style, it looks great. An S40 is quite boring, but as a daily driver would be maybe a better choice.
sivispacem
So I'm saying, from my experience, they're not as unreliable as people would like them to be They most definitely aren't as unreliable as people imply. Everyone I know whose owned an Alfa has had a remarkably breakdown-free experience. kamil121
Thanks for the reply's guys. i have asked around few alfa forums and people really say good things about them. Plus i found out that a 1.6 Alfa engine produces 120bhp in stock form. Volvo at the other hand only has 109bhp. Im very tempted to get an alfa as Sup3rman said - 156 has got style and i agree strongly on this. I dont drive as much these days as im out of college now. Anyway i think ill do some test drives in Alfa's and Volvo's and compare them and i'll see then ill post a pic here when i'll finally decide on the car. sivispacem
How much more is the insurance on the 2.0 T-spark Alfa? I only ask as even with 120hp, a 156-sized saloon car is going to be glacially slow. Well i have called my Insurance for a quote for a Opel Vectra 1.6 from 1999 as i was consiedering it and they said 760 Euro per year. so for a 2.0 T-Spark would probably be like 1100 euro. But i would have to call them to see.

Just at the drivers foot well they change from plastic to metal then bend up into the engine bay. They are exposed to all the sh*t of the day at that position and are bad for rotting. Vauxhall tried to change me £180 for the new pipes... but the plumber next door managed to fix it for £20. Was not pretty but it worked Other than that they are not bad cars. I had a 1997 which was a complete money pit, but it had not been looked after... and had been a Cat D write off. Edit: FYI Vauxhall is the name GM uses in the UK.
