universetwisters
What makes a true protagonist? Does he have to be a gangbanger, or a sophisticated gentleman? Does he need a deep personality, or a "fill-in-the-blank" character like Claude? Does he need to be a badass, or does he need a soft side? What do you guys think? Senex Iunior
A bit of everything, I think. Niko, for example, was at times badass, other times a bit softer, sometimes a bit of both.
a. outlandish
Cj, Niko and Johnny, i think this trio most realistic characters. Not just regular psychos with ambition for american dream. They suffer, humiliating by others, and they have to fight. But i rather, İf protag is a professional crook with a crew includes specialists through playing big time. that'll do to. With style like Michael Mann movie characters.
Mr_Leone
Flaws. Toni was an ass kisser, but would mow down herds of wiseguys for Salvatore. Niko was mentally unstable, a total hypocrite, and was good at killing. Vic Vance was put in an uncomfortable situation, but his instincts took over. He wanted to help. Space Cowboy
Niko and Tommy are good examples of "true" protagonists.

What makes you think that Niko's mentally unstable and a total hypocrite? The war has changed him to the point that he can take a human life without feeling remorse, but not to the point of post traumatic disorder. That situation wasn't hypocritical at all. Darko had his friends killed. For a thousand bucks. Those were Darko's friends as well. People Niko kills are complete strangers to him. These two situations aren't the same. Anyway, I called you on the mentally unstable part?
Mr_Leone
What murderer is mentally stable? If you can blindly murder people, being a stranger doesn't justify. Payne Killer
MyDog
A person doesn't have to be mentally unstable to commit murder. Michael Myers is mentally unstable because he enjoys killing people and does so for no reason. GTA protagonists kill for money, but most of their victims are people who had it coming to them, or people who try to kill them first.
Paul72
There is no definite answer, because every protagonist have different personalities, different stories, different life styles, etc. A true protagonist is up to the critic. LincolnClay
I 100% agree with Paul. One other thing that makes a good protagonist IMO is a personality. I don't want to play as some nameless killer with no incentive or motive, just killing because it's an option. Even Claude, who NEVER speaks, not once in the entire series, has a believable personality. He stays quiet about his life (maybe a little too literally) and keeps to himself, killing anyone without remorse while on a quest for revenge. That's what makes him unique. You never know if he's your friend or your enemy. Edited January 31, 2017 by TheGamingPr025
