Gtaghost22
Very peaceful religion, indeed. The actuall Religion has nothing to do with this. Do you think all muslims reacted like this to the movie or the ambassador's (Chris Stevens) death...? Audiophile
No. I clearly have been talking about the extremists and how they are usually the loudest about their religion being one of peace and then they do this. Have you not been reading anyones' posts and just nitpick little sentences to take out of context and then attack? Jesus Christ, you are such an annoying poster that I can't even express it in words. When you see me or someone else openly state that ALL Muslims have such extreme views and go against the whole "peace" thing then you can come in here shouting at everyone. Either learn to properly read peoples posts or get some reading comprehension skills in order to understand the context. I won't be responding to you further because I know with you there is no "end", you will keep coming back so long as the other individual responds and will make up whatever reason you see fit to continue and turn something into a full-blown argument. vertical limit
The killers of the American Ambassador were a minority of idiots, their purpose was most likely to sabotage relations and threaten the peace of the nation. They are either extremists or saboteurs who didn't support the revolution, maybe even both. Please don't judge the religion based on the actions of extremists or criminals. I find what the extremists do in foreign countries to be very disrespectful, such as the burning of Poppy flowers or of a Country's flag or even anarchy. It displays a negative image on all Arabs and Muslims. What "JosephX" wrote, was indeed very true. They weren't forced to watch the film, it was their own choice. I watch movies that insult all religions and races, it doesn't encourage me to wreak havoc or protest nor does it encourage the majority of the Arab and Muslim countries to do so. However the extremists have a thick skull and the information will never enter their heads. I apologise if these extremists have threatened your safety and that of your friends and loved ones and I also apologise for the wreck they have caused. A J
I feel very sad for the family of this ambassador killed, the innocent people of Benghazi and other kind Muslims around the world who have the intelligience to know better than to protest over very stupid stuff (videos on youtube). There's no simple answer to the question of why, islamic extremists go so far in todays world. There are just some very horrible people in this world, who practise different religions, and do awful things for which the religion get's blamed and not the individual. I wonder how different the world would be if different religions had never been created. Surely within ourselves, we can find the humanity and morals to be kind, respectful and honest to eachother with out the need of any scriptures. vertical limit
About 30,000 libyans stormed the compound of the "Ansar al-Shariah Brigade" (those responsible for leading the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi) and while no one was killed, they did burn a car. So all of us who were asking "where are the sensible muslims who claim to condemn this extremism and when are they going to speak up?!" Here they are. Audiophile
Oh well, I'm fine with being told my posts are rife with hidden bigotry (I assume you meant me among others, because of the example you gave) because I know while you perceive it as such based on how I wrote it, that's not how I am and next time I will make sure to add the extra word in that I am speaking of radical Muslims rather than just saying "very peaceful religion" even tho the entire time I have been posting in a such a context where I am clearly talking about the radicals. That was my bad, and I apologise for not making the distinction. The problem - as I see it anyway, IMO - is radical Islam and it's time that societies all over the world addressed the issue. Protect our Muslims and keep them safe and ensure they are part of our society because not all of them are like this, obviously. But drive out radical Islam and Islamic Jihad because - IMO anyway - it has no place in secular societies. The sad and unfortunate thing is that radical Islam increases Islamaphobia amongst other radicals and so begins a tit-for-tat 'us and them' situation. The film just serves as a convenient trigger for madmen to use religion as a method and means of a) creating chaos and b) grab resultant power from that chaos. And there are enough upstanding Muslim brothers and sisters who abhor those actions. And we've seen photos of them making their opinions known and now with this latest news that vertical limit posted. I study with, and am friends with Muslims from nearly all parts of the world, and none of my Muslim friends can understand this craziness. It's insane and it's dangerous, and I honestly think that some fundamentalists out there are using this stupid film as an excuse to incite violence on both sides. sivispacem
Someone made an interesting comment yesterday with regards to this. Paraphrased, it was essentially "the citizens of these countries are not rising up and rioting in response to the violent oppression of their fellow people in Syria, which is a far greater crime against Islam." The implication being that the minority who have become violent over the film and drawings are not defending Islam, but attacking the West- as if there were defending Islam they would have much larger, more existential threats to their fellow Muslims to deal with. GTA_stu
But is what's going on in Syria really perceived as a threat/crime against Islam by the majority of Muslims outside of Syria? It's a crime against the Syrian people, rather than one against Islam is how I'd argue it's perceived. Plus Arabs suffering oppression at the hands of their leaders is nothing new, it's been happening for decades. It's not something to suddenly get enraged about. And again, I wouldn't say it's perceived as a threat to Islam or an attack on Islam, certainly not in the blunt way the film is. The film is such a blatant and direct attack on Islam, whereas what's happening in Syria is a lot more complicated and less obvious. And it's not seen as an external attack, whereas the film is. An external attack on Islam is much more likely to gain negative attention and more of a reaction, especially if it is from the already "hated" west and if it is in such a crude and obvious manner. It is an attack on the west, but they are doing it in the name of defending Islam.

It's a crime against the Syrian people, rather than one against Islam is how I'd argue it's perceived. Depends whether you believe that Iran is benign, or actively seeks to destroy Sunni, Sufi and other Islamic subreligions. Syria has been their agent thus far in funding, supplying and instigating sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia, so you could argue that's existential for the majority of Muslims. Dingdongs
But then you have to pose the question; how many of these young Muslims on the ground actually know about the geopolitics of the area with regard to Syria being propped up by Iran? I think not many...

But in regards to Syria, don't you think that the ambivalence of the Islamic world towards the Civil War is due to the growing murkiness of the rebel movement? Given their alleged history of torture, public executions and attacks on pro-Assad civilians, maybe it's no longer viewed as a secular ruler oppressing his religious populace? While I understand that most Libians are not anti-american/anti-western. And I do appreciate the fact that the more sensible folks decided to show up in mass. i don't think the terms 'storming a compound' and 'burning a car' are related to 'sensible'. Just my take on things. I know I'm not on the ground there so I really can't pass judgment, and the way might be a bit different than what we might do in the west. I think one of the things we in 'merica are learning is that elections don't equal a civil society. A nation needs to have a functioning legal and cultural sector as well. Look at us, America had a legal and civil foundation 100 years or so before there was a United States. I'm not saying we should spoon feed different cultures on democracy, they might have a different way of doing it, but we should atleast demonstrate some of the more mundane functions of government. Then maybe elections. And these are all different for each nation/society. Personally I want to see everyone be free, but I'm realistic enough to know that that doesn't happen overnight. When elections are forced upon people without that civil foundation then bad people might take power under the guise of 'free elections' see Muslum Brotherhood in Egypt. However I may be wrong but some friends on my Facebook have some relatives or friends that relayed the message saying it was either person/people who wanted to cause anarchy or because thy thought it was a catalyst in banishing that brigade.
