I did like the gritty style of R* games last gen and still do. There games were more arcade like and nothing will replace that. However I am also happy R* have moved on and now we get hands with fingers! colgate.gif It's only natural for graphics to improve and move on. However retro games or any other old games will always hold a place in my heart. Hell I still play 2D games like Sonic and Mario so this shows my attitude towards graphics.

Gameplay is above all the most important. I suppose the answer to your question from me personally is yes and no. bored.gif

I think you can change the filters of the game so you can put less sunlight if it irritates you.

But you have to understand that they also do this, I think, because of the setting. Liberty City was always kind of a grey city, unlike Vice City and the cities in San Andreas, where it seemed like the sun is always shining. Probably they would have put the same effects in GTA IV like the effects on the plane if it was set in another city.

And I've voted 'no' but I meant yes

Bloom is an interesting topic in video games, and the effect really falls into that gameplay vs realism arguement. On one hand it makes the sun seem brighter on a clear day at certain times ie heading towards a sunset which in real life is also just as blinding, but that can hind gameplay somewhat its abit of a tough call.

I suppose it really comes down to the situation, chilling out looking over a large vista its going to be perfect, in the heat of a gun fight tends not to be so nice, im sure/hope rockstar will find a good balance with it, as someone mentioned BF3 which has a very prominent bloom effect at times its an issue that in some scenarios when the game loaded one team already had a 75/25 ratio to winning because of the tactical advantage that you just couldnt see anyone until the last second as they came through the sunlight.

Im not a huge graphics freak gameplay does win in my eyes but I couldnt say I prefer the old style graphics

I didnt read all of what you wrote so im just gonna reply to the name of the topic. No your not the only one i also liked the old graphics of sa it gave the game a certain feel and it was great, i was watched a video on youtube were some guy had gta iv graphics on sa and the game did not feel the same.

Have you ever looked at an object that had something behind it with a reflection. I would say the picture of the plane is not that far off, especially with the glare off the water.

what is enb series? I don't see the sun covering the plane in that photo whatsoever. There might be a slight bloom effect but it looks fine to me. Your definitely nitpicking dude

this is bloom notice how the picture is sortof fuzzy not clear

Those are 2 good examples as i've said before I think they got the filters wrong for IV not TBOGT but the thing that most annoyed me is when the AI doesn't seem to get affected by lighting changes, if your focusing on multiplayer you don't have to worry about that cause most players are human and the they opt to use less effects on multiplayer games they are conscious about those visibility issues, in the end they just abuse effects to enhance the graphics without actually resorting to heavy models and texts and also because those effects may help them hide the parts of the game that are loading etc.

I've just been playing SA again, and in no way would I want a return to that graphical style or level. If the graphics are anything like in the screenshots GTAV is going to look fantastic.

i never meant old style as in san andreas graphics i meant the rage engine notably eflc tbogt

Voted "yes". I totally hated IV graphics. V's graphics seem to be more like SA, which I approve. Lighting and bloom fits it nicely.

IV's graphics are actually quite sh*t, vegetation and people actually look totally awful. Sometimes IV would look really nice at night in the rain, but most of the time it would look horrible (on PS3 anyway)

V's graphics are a major improvement.

BF3 has ridiculous bloom, so much so that on some anti air guns, i can't actually see the cross hairs while aiming to the sky (i would say its my TV settings or something, but no other game has such strong over bearing light from the sun...), really doubt V will suffer from such things though.

Was it horrible in 2008 when the game was new though? It is nearing 5 years old after all.

Back in 2008, i'd say it was fairly good, but not for long, i remember thinking about 6 months after how sh*t IV's graphics had gotten, and i always thought the vegetation was 100% horrific even when IV first came out.

Yeah I agree about the vegetation, but what about the way vehicles look? Most sandbox games have vehicles that look like toys. GTA IV's actually look real IMO.

There were some parts dropped the ball on yet others where it looked stunning. Even today when I play it I think it still looks good for 2008.

Srry i voted yes by accident, but i prefer older graphics, New York in IV just looked hideous it rained almost everyday like it was set in Seattle or something, but then again in real life New York looks hideous from a distant until you go in Times Square area, only part of the map that had life to it

LC has a charming beauty when it rains. It looks weird when it's all bright and sunny IMO.

Though if you don't like it raining all the time I suggest never playing Sleeping Dogs. It rains far more than in GTA IV.

yes i have to fully agree with that most of the cars in iv looked realistic nothing over the top with them everything just looked like real life they really did cars perfectly in that game the infernus was abit odd but it still fit

the look of cars in for example sleeping dogs makes them look very arcadey iv seemed to have done cars perfectly in both form and apperance not overshine like sleeping dogs

The IV style really suited NY/Liberty, and the V style really suits Cali/Los Santos. Personally I prefer V because I prefer the setting in general. I still want realism, and this is probably going to happen as LA is the more vibrant and sunnier city in real life. Not to say IV graphics were bad, they fitted the whole 'concrete canyon' theme and dark, gritty mood perfectly. But I, like most people, want to see something new and fresh - Los Santos looks it so far.

i just hope they dont go the route that Battlefield has inspired many. A little lens flare is fine, but now for some reason we have all these dust particles on the screen when im looking at the sun. Its so annoying, and like previously said gets in the way. It adds nothing to a game.

The only thing bad about Battlefield was when it gets blurry during gunshots. suicidal.gif

And as for the term 'bloom' i dont think that is a correct word is it?

Yeah, I find BF3 very annoying at times because of it but I do hope it's not like that in V. I don't think it will be as bad or bright but I think it will have it.

The thing with BF3 is that it's always sunny in every map whereas V will have different weather which makes me think it won't be as bad or annoying.

nah i can live with these bloom effects as i got pretty much used to HDR in nowadays games anyway (Skyrim, Fallout 3 and New Vegas anyone?...) , but what's really bugging me is - too much blur, i hate it, especially when there's too much DOF (Depth Of Field) filter applied so, that background will run out of focus to early, making it almost impossible to see what's beyond hundred feet away from where my character is standing...
