Auto Theft of a Grand scale
Whilst GTA IV is my favourite in the series, I think GTA III definitely takes top place in terms of gritty realism. With each new GTA, the games have become increasingly Americanized. I don't mean that in an offensive way whatsoever, just hear me out. In GTA III, the police actually sound determined to kill you. They'll shout stuff like "Get that guy!" and "move it!", whereas in San Andreas, they say quotes such as "Kickin' names and takin' ass" - an obvious pun. Whilst this is funny, it totally removes that realistic edge I think that GTA needs to re-implement. Listen to the first 43 seconds of the video below, I remember being like 8 years old, fearing for my life as I ran from police; especially when helicopters were overhead, etc. Don't get me wrong, they had some funnier quotes in GTA III, but I'd much rather play a game that felt realistic, instead of slowly dipping into the humour of Saints Row. I realise GTA came out years before, but Rockstar need to discover their roots. The police in this video sound so much less sinister. I don't like it at all. Some other noticeable differences between GTA III and the other games: The pedestrians sounded much more scared when you fired guns, some of the screams actually lasted several seconds instead of a second, max. Gangs would shoot at you on sight if they didn't like you. Yes, this could be tweaked in GTA V so that they actually had to spot you first, instead of having a 6th sense. Whilst they still existed in GTA III, there were less ridiculous quotes and more serious ones. As mentioned above, the police especially, sounded very serious. Guns like the shotgun actually knocked you down, and did considerable damage. Even the sounds of running over pedestrians was more violent. You could actually hear the squelching when you drove over their body. Even though it's likely a glitch, sometimes pedestrians that you ran over would land in positions with their arms in the air, almost looking like they've broken a bone. Death sounds and animations in GTA III were more realistic. (Excluding GTA IV's animations, they ruled! Euphoria Physics FTW. Here are the pain sounds in GTA III. Some are stupid, but the majority of the 'Male & Female Screams' are very realistic. They need more like this in GTA V, even longer ones where entire crowds are screaming. It was a huge disappointment to fire a rocket launcher in Times Square, to find that the general public barely make a sound. I know if I was in that situation, I'd be screaming until I was on-board a plane to another country. Opinions? MosquitoSmasher
Can't say i see it that way at all really. Cops in GTA IV crack me up: 'Permission to blow his head off' 'I'm that bad-ass nigga yo momma warned you about' And this is a white fat cop saying, LOL! And there's many more. And personally i don't want to see Liberty City for a long long loooooong time. We've had that enough now with GTA III, GTA LC Stories and GTA IV. I'm so damn glad we finally get some real variety in environments in GTA V.

wwinterj
Whilst GTA IV is my favourite in the series, Stopped reading at that. We have seen GTA 3 visited again this gen with GTA IV and honestly I hope that's the last time we see Liberty City. Now that San Andreas is been revisited so to speak in GTA V I think the next GTA game should either be Vice City again or even better something completely new. Vice City is my best GTA game to date and although I'm a little disappointed R* have decided to skip going back there for now I honestly would prefer somewhere new next. Zee
I know what you mean, the environments in gta4 seemed especially watered down. No place really felt dangerous. I was blown away when I revisited gta3 and heard the stupendous audio production. The gun sounds in San Andreas were total crap. Sounded like popguns. Infact, most of the audio in SA was sh*te. edit: AND I HATED the death sounds in GTAIV there were way less of them than in GTAIII Edited September 9, 2012 by Zee

saintsrow
Hah, those GTAIII sound snippets are a trip down memory lane If that voice actor did all those first :43 sound bites in the same day, he must have been pretty hoarse by the end of the day. And I agree, there was a bit harder edge to some of the humor. To your point about GTAIII: Being the first of its kind, I think it did have a different feel than GTA-VC and of course GTA-SA; specifically GTAIII seemed more claustrophobic and indeed scarier than the subsequent games. It was still self-consciously a game, that had risen from 2D to 3D, and you felt a bit more trapped in it, desite its actual 3D freedom. That series III-VC-SA was a progression of an increasing sense of openness in the open world simulator, at some expense to the sense of dread that you felt in GTAIII. Official General
I personally can't see what why you are complaining about these little things, they were done very well in GTA IV. My only problem with the police in GTA IV was that they were a bit too over-zealous and were somehow always able to magically find you on two wanted stars or more, even when you were well-hidden and not spotted by them at all. The gangs in GTA IV were just fine, my only problem with them is that I wished they engaged in random shoot-outs and violence with each other, not just the police or initiated by the player. There could have been much more random crimes being committed in the streets. The most rough parts of LC and Alderney did not feel dangerous enough. As for everything else, you are just b*tching, it was good enough.

Did you forget to take your Ritalin today? OT, I completely and utterly agree OP. In IV, however, I felt the violence was a lot less comical and the dialogue/sound was sometimes very disturbing (how it should be).
loki18760
I dont see the the OP was trying to make and why it would apply, after GTA3 R* made the cops a big joke on purpose as some comic relief. People want more realism but there comes a point where you have to acknowledge it is a game, and a game that has never taken itself completely serious. COP jokes are a staple the same way hookers have become a staple in the game.

cidamelo
I COMPLETELY agree with you! GTA III is the best GTA for me. While I love San Andreas, I recognize it has a kind goofy humour, I prefer the way it was in GTA III, more dark and less jerk

JoeJoeMcTwist
I agree with the OP - I'd like to see more aggressive cops in V - in IV they sounded pretty soft and were easy to get away from - I don't remember the last time a cop actually rammed my car in the game

They read and understood your topic clearly but just stated their opinions as well. I respect you and your decisions but it would be kind not to jump to conclusions and think people are being ignorant, saves you and others from flame wars lol . On-Topic: I kinda gotta agree as well. Even though I haven't played GTAIII since I was 20, I remember my little brother was scared straight of cops and their harsh tones in GTA3. Now whenever I play IV all I see are fat cops with funny one-liners, which I'm not that concerned with. I find it funny, considering I'm from NYC and majority of them are either African American or obese lol. In GTAIII I'd love to hear them get pissed off behind me and the helicopter pilot yell "I'm NOT f*cking kidding A**HOLE!" it would make me laugh for hours on end. So honestly I hope while they keep some funny lines from cops when they walk down the street or chase an npc suspect, they get serious and violent whenever we (the player) get involved with them. H. León
Agreed, the humor in the game must be in radio stations, easter eggs and SOME dialogues, i'd like cops to be funny but just when you have one wanted level stars, from 2-6, they should REALLY get serious Edited September 9, 2012 by HUGOHL

Racecarlock
GTA without humor is like GTA without car theft. Why do people keep insisting on removing cool or funny sh*t because realism? Nobody's concerned with realism when making a pinball game, nobody was concerned with realism back when games were about shooting space invaders or asteroids. If you want a boring, humorless, empty ass hole of a sandbox, go play mafia II. GTA is better than that.
