Still LAG/Bad graphics :s

So as many others.... I'm experiencing lag with GTA4 EFLC.

My laptop is a Sony Vaio with the following specs:

Intel i7 2.2 proc

8gb ram

Win 7

Geforce GT540M 2gb.

So as far as i can tell, let's be subtle, a pretty decent laptop which in now way should have problems with this game.

But i'm getting pretty frustrated now, i've tried countless graphics settings, i've used icenhancer (which improves quite a bunch but makes the game incredibly bright, could not get this away) and installed the game fresh with latest updates (steam) and Win 7 and graphics drivers are up to date. Also i've tried varies command lines. I've tried shutting of windows event log as well..

How is it possible this laptop still won't run GTA4EFLC like it should :s

Any ideas?

laptop gpu aren't recommended with GTA . even if some are quite nice cards , they won't never reach a desktop card power and GTA being very demanding on ressource there is also a heat problem that may appear . don't know the 540M but cpu and ram are enough ..

Actually, you'll need even higher cpu clocks to run it decently, 2.2ghz won't cut it (im at 4.5ghz yet I get dips in some areas), just put everything on medium and enjoy it for what it is; don't kid yourself, your notebook is not even remotely capable of playing with IceEnhancer on.

On medium settings and even with some settings on low or off; lag stays...

And it's only with the GTA games. Other games, which require higher specs, run without any problem even in 1920x1440 resolution at 120hz. Even though laptops are slower than comparable desktop pc's, i'm pretty sure this laptop normally should have the oomph to handle this game.

With GTA4 i even have lag in 1024x768 with everything on low, i mean.. come on! The laptop ain't that slow wink.gif

not sure . GTA is not only top notch graphics game but it's also very detailled and thus requires a very powerful PC . if think by it's level of details GTA can be compared to flight simulators , which is to say a very ressource demanding game . GTA sollicitates everything cpu, ram , gpu and if you have a lack of power somewhere you'll get issues confused.gif

GTAIV is not "top notch graphics", vanilla gtaiv looks terrible, modded graphics on the other hand look incredible!

OP: Don't feel bad this game is such a resource hog and it doesn't even fully utilize your gpu/cpu most of the time, if you're looking for constant 60 fps forget about it, your notebook is pretty decent, you'll be able to play a lot of stuff in it, but you're never going to see 60 fps minimum in gta iv, be happy with 35+ and be done with it.

you're wrong . i played GTA at 50 constant fps with a good timecyc and believe me GTA is one of the most impressive game i've never played . a great , great game . impressive at all levels . i knew it was a great game when i first discovered the accuracy of the peds animations . and since then GTA never stopped impressing me again and again . and yes this is a ressource hog cause with vanilla i played at 25 - 30 fps , but when i started performance modding and removing redundants 3D objects i played at 50 - 60 fps , sometimes 70 . but i'm a bit size "paranoiac" . each time i download a mod i compare the file(s) size with original . what i'm trying to say it's that with good modding GTA is a trully amazing game

Ok, well, I disagree, I think it looks dreadful, it is in fact pretty detailed, but textures and lightning in general look awful. Either way, yeah, I can mantain 60 fps constantly too if I turn off shadows completely but game looks even worse, so let me rephrase that: you'll never see 60 fps minimum in gtaiv with very high graphic settings, at least not yet, I can mantain triple digits all the time if I leave everything on low and sliders on 1, duh?! but that's not what I meant.

On my [email protected],5ghz, gtx580 I get 45-60fps on eflc in multiplayer maxed out with high shadows (not very high) and sliders on 50, so unless you have a 5.5ghz overclock on an ivy bridge and gtx690 and play on 1280x1024 or something like that I don't see how you could get 60 fps minimum ever, it's just not possible yet (and i repeat, I mean on high settings, not with everything 'off' and modded to look like wolfenstein)

-edit- also, just because it's an i7 doesn't make it enough for gtaiv, cpu clock speeds are the most important factor when it comes to gaining performance on this game, and in my opinion 2.2ghz won't cut it for a descent framerate at good settings, if he overclocked it (I know he can't since he's on a laptop) to like 4.0ghz or more then he would be able to mantain high framerate almost constantly; I just want to mention that I gained literally 30 fps by overclocking my 2500k from 3.3 to 4.5, yes, thirty frames, like I said cpu clock speed is the most important thing on this game, 2.2ghz it's a lousy speed for gtaiv, even if it's a i7.

Well the processor can boost itself to 3.1ghz...

That's what it does when running some programs, and as mentioned flight sims for example, man it's like watching a movie, so detailed, smooth and awesome withouth any glitches or lag.

And be happy with 35+ fps? won't even get to that without lagging constantly.

@ Brainsick : you're right when you say that with a laptop it's gonna be difficult to "find" the missing fps . but i disagree when you say gta isn't a good game . i mean with good fps and good timecyc gta is photorealistic gaming experience (medium high settings) , i just can't get how people could ask for more ??

if you can run smoothly recent flight sims there's no reason you couldn't run gta . then the problem is probably somewhere else . did you have up to date graphic drivers , did you have game latest patch (1.0.7.0)

Running game on similiar laptop with key settings on:

1366x768 resolution

Texture detail: high

Shadows : off

View and detail distance: 40

car density:25

Texture Filtering(AF) : 8x

Using visualIV and treesIV mods, 1,04 patch. Also locking day time to nigh or making permanent cloudy day with native trainer, so i would'nt miss shadows too much.

Framerate never dips below 30. Also using throttlestop to lock my cpu on 2,1ghz, still good framerate and laptop stays far from high temperatures.

My post from one of recent recent topics. My laptop specs are very same.
