Wanted Level In GTA V

(I know there is already an existing topic about the search radius in GTA V, but this is about the whole Wanted system in GTA V).

OK, so I just had a great idea. Why don't we have two seperate wanted levels? One for your vehicle, and one for the protag. I believe Mafia 2 touched on this slightly, with the ability to change license plates in a garage to avoid the police.

So, say for example you were driving down the street, and you run someone over. You get a two-star wanted level. The windows and doors of the car are all intact, so the protaganist hasn't gained a wanted level, but the vehicle he is driving has.

Here are a few scenarios that could be encountered in GTA V, and how this new Wanted system would handle them.

In-vehicle crimes

Player runs over pedestrian while in fully intact vehicle (no windows or doors smashed) - Assign the vehicle a 2 star wanted level, with a medium-sized search radius. Persue the player in police cruisers. Use firearms and stingers on the vehicle to burst the tyres if the chase goes on for more than two minutes.

Player discharges firearm while in vehicle (window smashed allowing for police visibility) - Assign both the player and the vehicle a 2-3 star wanted level, with a large search radius, depending on the firearm and how many times it was fired. Persue the player in police cruisers. Use firearms and stingers on the vehicle to burst the tyres if the chase goes on for more that 2 minutes.

Player causes major damage to a multitude of vehicles - (This really bugged me in IV, you could cause massive amounts of damage to other people's vehicles, and the police wouldn't do a thing!) Assign the vehicle (and player, depending on if the doors/windows have been damaged) a 1 star wanted level, with a medium-sized search radius. Use forceful methods (not firearms or stingers) on the vehicle, such as boxing it in and surrounding the vehicle in order to disable/stop it.

On-foot crimes

Player assaults a pedestrian/cop using a melee weapon/fists - Assign the player a 1-star wanted level, with a small search radius, and alert any nearby foot-units (usually 1 or 2 police officers) within the search radius. Use police batons and tasers on the player if he gives chase for more than a minute on foot. If the player attempts to enter a vehicle, assign the vehicle with a 1-star wanted level aswell.

Player assualts/kills a pedestrian/cop using a firearm - Assign the player a 3-star wanted level, with a medium sized search radius, and alert any nearby foot-units and police cruisers within the search radius. Use firearms, batons and tasers on the player immediately. If the player attempts to enter a vehicle, assign the vehicle a 3-star wanted level aswell.

Player jacks a car - Assign both the player and the vehicle a 2-star wanted level, with a small search radius. Alert any nearby foot-units and police cruisers within the search radius. Use the boxing-in method in order to stop the car.

(If there are any other scenarios that I've missed, tell me below and I'll add them to the list, with a description of how this system would handle them).

Stealth

In my opinion, stealth has never really been properly used in GTA, atleast in regards to the wanted system. In, IV, it was impossible to evade the cops using stealth; they always seemed to know where you were. To tackle this problem, a system could be introduced with a mix of elements from games such as Assassin's Creed and Mafia 2.

Here are a few possible ways to evade the police, stealthily, using this system:

Hide in a dumpster/container large enough to hide in - It worked well in Assassin's Creed, so why not use it in a GTA game? The only conditions there would have to be is that you are not seen by the cops, and there aren't too many peds around (they could alert the cops).

Hide in an alleyway/out of sight - Another thing that bugged me about GTA IV. Even if you're completely out of sight, as long as you're in the search radius, the cops will continue to search for you. But the moment you stepped outside the circle, they would give up. How did they even know you left the radius anyway?

Blending into the crowd - A simple concept, but one that would be hard to implement. I'm guessing Rockstar could go about it the same way that Assassin's Creed did it; hold down a button to mimic a ped and follow the crows/group.

Changing clothes - This was used in GTA SA and I think GTA IV, so it should stay basically the same. You walk into a clothes store, or your safehouse, and change clothes. Aslong as the cops don't have a wanted level on your vehicle aswell as you, you're safe.

The point of this new wanted system is to distinguish between the player's wanted level, and the vehicle's wanted level

; they're both two completely different things.

sounds good but 3 stars for killing ped with gun is realistic but would make the game a bit too challenging i think.

Deja vu... have you posted this before?

I posted a little bit about the search radius in the search radius topic (wut) but I decided to make a new thread here to discuss my full wanted level design.

Doesnt matter.

Anyway: In the wanted system some improvements can be made.

I am very interested what those improvements are going to be.

For your ideas: Maybe a little too complicated.

It is nice to understand how a wanted system works so you can cope with it the best way possible. If we would need a special manual to understand how the ins and outs of the system work, this would damage gameplay in my opinion.

this seems to be a more complicated version of the wanted system from Driver parrallel lines where both player and vehicle have seprate levels of felony.

I actually think R* should take some ideas form Driver PL

if player commits a crime on foot then they get a wanted level, but if they enter an unwanted car without being seen, then they are semi invisable to cops as long as you don't drive like an idiot or hang around cops who are close by as they will recognise you through the windows which was indicated by a little meter that would tell you how close you were to being seen.

If a player commits a crime while in a vehicle then that vehicle will become wanted, so the police will search for that vehicle, but if the player can ditch the car without being seen then they are completely free from the police unless you get back into thewanted vehicle,

if the player is seen entering or exiting a vehicle then the wanted level will be transferred respectivley to both player and vehicle.

this system along with better police Chase AI, the search radius from IV and some form of ticket system for very minor crimes such as bumping into police vehicles or starting fights we would have a pretty good wanted level system for V that would allow stealth and tactics to be employed while trying to escape, yet the system remains simple and easy to understand.

3 stars for one pedestrian? This isn't mafia II. Oh, and the f*cking hit and run rule again, yeah because having it annoy the living sh*t out of me in mafia II just wasn't enough, now people want it to follow me into GTA V as well.

3 stars for a firearm discharge? What's the point of having crime in the game if it's f*cking impossible to get away with, and even minor sh*t will get you 3 stars?! Why?

This is not real life. Why ruin it by making these laws so f*cking complicated? With this in, I might just need video games in the video game to escape from the reality of the god damn video game!

Okay. Seriously? Let's get some of the flaws out of here.

3 stars for running over a pedestrian? Look, I understand your trying to make things realistic here, but let's think for a moment. During a mission, you have to follow a guy. Say when your following the guy he goes on the street. And there are a bunch of cars in the way, so you take the sidewalk. You accidentally hit a person, instant 3 stars. Are you serious? You know how much of a pain this would be? Haha, trying to chase a guy in a fast car and having police blocking your path. Yeah, that would be easy. (yes, I'm well aware that happens in some missions of the GTA series, but not in EVERY single mission)

3 stars for pulling out a firearm? What? You don't even get helicopters chasing after you in real life if you pull out a firearm. Are you kidding me? I can't even scroll through what weapons I have without getting police on my trail. Come on now, that is absolutely ridiculous. What about in missions? Imagine trying to kill a guy in a mission and a helicopter comes in shooting at you! (yes, I'm well aware that happens in some missions of the GTA series, but not in EVERY single mission)

2 stars for jacking a car? This is Grand Theft Auto, not L.A. Noire. You are making it damn near impossible to even play GTA enjoyably. What is the point if you can't even get into a car? So if you lose your current car that you are in your screwed?

1 star for crashing a car? Okay, when I saw you made this part I thought you were joking.

You are trying to make GTA like real freakin' life. This won't ever work. Rockstar would never listen to such suggestions. If this happened, GTA V would be a commercial failure. I do agree on the other things such as being able to switch your license plate to erase your wanted level. I also agree with the Stealth things, however most of this are ridiculous. I honestly thought this was a joke post at first then I realized it was serious. Seriously.

too many laws in my opinion - previous gta games already had too many stars pop up for minor crimes - I think in III it was 3 stars for running over a cop

crashing into other cars recklessly and watching your car get damaged is a core aspect of GTA - getting stars for it would take away the fun - hitting another vehicle has never been a crime in gta unless that car was a cop cruiser

- this should be in the wishlist section btw

Grand Theft Auto series isn't mean to be about realism, it's about having fun. If you want realism wait till it gets released and then request mods for it, meanwhile i don't want the base game to be super realistic where you can run out of gas or have too real of a police system.

If Mafia did that that's cool and appropriate but nowadays with CCTV everywhere and non tinted windows it should be impossible to get away with something, any crime, using a disguise should be the only way to disclose your identity and make the use of the options you so rightfully pointed out and a mix of RDRs bounty assassins creed notoriety, the IV radius and VCs changing clothes could make the police wanted system both realistic and fun.

To the OP (note: I only skimmed the post, due to time constraints.):

I understand the desire for more realism, but in this particular video game, such actions would get tedious and annoying for the major population, in my opinion. Moreover, (in GTA IV) if you fire a weapon in the immediate vicinity of a police officer, you already get a 2 start wanted level. It's only upon shooting a police officer that you acquire 3 stars.

A lot of people want the police to be stronger and smarter. To me, stronger: possibly; smarter: sure. But also I think stealth should be implemented in a good manner. There was little (to no) stealth in GTA IV. Cops seemed to know where you were at all times, even if there were no civilians or sights on where I was.

Just my opinions, though. smile.gif

Lock n' Stock

It was frustrating enough in GTA IV that you got 3-stars for shooting a cop, but just for shooting a pedestrian? No thanks.
