Being told I should be getting better FPS

Hey guys, for the past year I have barely touched Skyrim & Battlefield 3 due to getting low FPS. I've tried updating my Graphics Card drivers, disabling Anti-Aliasing and so forth, to no avail.

 

It was only today when a friend mentioned that he downloaded new audio drivers, updated his BIOS and downloaded new Chipset drivers, and said that he was getting a 20FPS increase; that I've decided to make it my mission to try to squeeze the best performance out of my computer that I possibly can.

 

On Battlefield 3 & Skyrim, I'm barely receiving 60FPS on medium settings on both games. From what I've been told, I should be getting better FPS on even higher settings.

 

PC Specs:

ATI Radeon 7950 3GB

i5 2550k 3.4GHz

Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Motherboard

12GB RAM

1920x1080

750W

Windows 7 64-bit

 

I would appreciate absolutely any advice. I'm not very technical, I can install/wipe drivers, but I wouldn't know where to download new Chipset drivers, hell.. I don't even really know what a Chipset is. If you guys could link me to any driver updates, I'd be infinitely grateful. I'm not being lazy, I just genuinely don't know what I'm looking for.

What resolution are you at?

You should be able to comfortably get 60FPS on high settings at 1920x1200, and maybe even on Ultra High.

 

I have heard however that AMD cards seem to have issues with BF3 for some reason, i am not so sure though.

 

Here is a benchmark i quickly stole from Anandtech the XFX 7950 is at 67FPS, but that system is running with an i7 3960 Extreme.

 

Unfortunately I am not really sure what you can do to fix those issues (I am terrible with that) but you are justified in thinking your system isn't performing quite up to scratch, someone else will have to take it from here.

Then do what your friend did and update your motherboard bios, just be careful as 1 mistake will render your entire PC useless.

For chipset, that's not to difficult to do, just head over to Intel's website and you can select your chipset from there.

Note that you won't select your motherboard model because Intel won't have it, but it does have chipset drivers for your board, since the chipset used on your board is by Intel.

I find those model numbers rather confusing. As far as my knowledge goes, if the last two digits of the model number are lower numbers, then chances are it's a cheap entry level video card not designed for gaming or processing of 3D objects.

No, wrong wrong wrong.

With Nvidia cards that is true, a 560 is better than a 550 and a 570 is better than a 560 and so on up to the 590 (Which is a dual card).

Then in a year the new series of cards are released, they are basically slightly upgraded rebranded version of last years cards (650 660ti, 670 ect)

With AMD cards its the last three, for example a 7770 isn't that great, a 7850 is better, a 7870 is even better and the 7950 is another step up then the 7970 then the 7990 (Which is a dual card.)

 

For desktops those pretty much cover all the models from both manufacturers that you will be looking at for gaming, the mobile cards are branded similarly they just have the m (GT520m GT540m HD 7650 ect ect)

 

By the way, any graphics card nowadays can handle 3D objects lol, just some are not really so great for gaming.

OT, as others have said that's a pretty beastly system. You certainly shouldn't have any trouble with getting high performance out of it. I would update, in order

 

1) GPU drivers- if you can, do a full-on roll-back of the old ones and install the new ones freshly

2) Chipset drivers

3) BIOS update- only if you don't see any performance increase with the other two.

I would also make sure there isn't crap lagging your system in the background.

Kill all running programs you don't need. Run a virus and spyware scans to make sure there's nothing hidden running doing nasty things.

 

Although I can say with my specs and bunch of stuff I don't really need running and still get 50-60fps on High settings in BF3. And honestly you can run the game at Low settings and it'll still look good just up the AA to smooth some things out if anything. A lot of top players actually run BF3 on low settings despite having a system that can run it just as well at High or Ultra.

What power supply are you using? I know you said 750w which is more than enough wattage, but if it is an el-cheapo no name 750w, the chances are it simply won't have enough 12v amps to power a beast like your system.

 

Not enough Amps for your card can cause system freezes when under load (such as playing games), blue screens and low FPS for the system specs when compared to other users with similar PCs.

The symptoms he's showing (I.E no actual issues, but FPS lower than it should be) are not indicative of a weak power supply IMO.
