GTA V: 10 Killer Features That Would Make It Great

Grand Theft Auto is a series that’s been under more scrutiny than just about any other. While it’s usually associated with drugs and violent hooker deaths in the media, it’s the freedom to do things like ride a flying golf cart, go crazy with RPGs, and hijack tanks that makes GTA such a beloved series for players. GTA IV took a step away from the ridiculousness of the previous games in the series in favor of a more serious tone, although total freedom to the player was still there.

With GTA V’s announcement, along with a trailer and a handful of gameplay images, fans are wondering what exactly this next installment will be like. Will it stay the course of realism, or draw more from the insanity that made GTA: San Andreas such a great game? Whichever course Rockstar takes, here’s a list of 10 things that will make this the sequel we’ve been waiting for.

10. Better Cheats

Grand Theft Auto IV is an immensely fun game. With refined shooting and a realistic phyiscs engine, wanton destruction had never been more enjoyable. However, the game lacked some of the fun cheats that its predecessors had. While IV did include the ability to spawn certain vehicles, add and remove police notoriety, and refill health and ammo, it totally skipped flying cars. What gives?

Even if Rockstar continues with the realistic storyline and physics, they can still give us cheats to modify it just a bit. How about giving us slow motion, being able to drive cars on water, giving pedestrians weapons, or being able to switch gravity on and off at will? Can you imagine free play multiplayer with everyone in flying tanks? Amazing.

9. Environmental Variety

Sure, causing havoc in the city is fun. But you can only spend so much time in the city before you want some open countryside or a nice suburb to play in. GTA V should at least give us one of these. Perhaps opening up the large mountain range in the picture above would work? It’s always nice to have a way to escape from the city, and adding an environment that isn’t a bustling metropolis would be great, especially for multiplayer. The ocean doesn’t count

8. More Guns

While the shooting in GTA IV is definitely the best of the series, there just weren’t enough toys to play with. Two of each weapon type and one RPG? Come on, Rockstar. The only way to get more weapons was to download the two DLC packs, and those only added a handful each. Gunplay is only fun if you have a cool arsenal to back it up with, and it’d be great to see some better weapons this time around, or at least have a larger amount of them. Maybe our boys at Rockstar need to have a chat with the Borderlands development team.

7. Better Side Missions

While GTA IV’s story missions were almost always thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable, the side missions were definitely lacking. This can be said about the previous games as well. It would be really great to have a nice selection of unique side missions to stray off to, maybe even with a story line or two thrown in. It’s never fun to spend time on side questing with little or no reward at the end. No more “stranger” missions, Rockstar. Please.

6. Character Customization

As great as it is to have a defined character with a set personality and appearance, it would be really cool if Rockstar took a page from Saints Row’s book and let us customize our character. In some cases, it’s a lot more personal to watch your character grow and develop if you created them yourself. If that’s too much to ask for, at least give us better customization options in multiplayer. Now, I’m not saying I want furries and lucha libre wrestlers in my free play sessions, but come on. Picking your ethnicity and whether or not to wear a hat doesn’t count as a character creator in my book.

5. Upgrades

One of the most satisfying things (for me at least) in a single-player game is watching your character grow, whether it be in physical appearance or just with stats. It’s always rewarding to feel as though you’re constantly making progress and becoming more powerful as you play. GTA V should implement this in some way. The various stats CJ could upgrade in San Andreas were… interesting, but I think that being able to improve your proficiency in areas like shooting, stamina, and maybe even personality would be really cool. Sex appeal just isn’t something that should really need upgrading. Especially when you have money.

4. Co-op

Multiplayer in GTA IV was great. Game modes like Cops and Crooks were loads of fun to play with friends, and were a fresh change of pace from running around blowing everything up. You know what would be even better? Real co-op missions. Think about the bank robbery in GTA IV. Now imagine that same mission with two or three of your friends. There’s loads of potential here for engaging co-operative play. A set of missions specifically for two to four players would be hours of extra fun.

3. More Vehicles

Sure, GTA games always have loads of vehicles. But after so many hours of driving them, the majority all start to feel the same. You’ll have something that stands out like the Infernus or Turismo, but for the most part you spend your time driving the same 10 to 15 average automobiles. How about an ATV? A few more motorcycles? The Popemobile wouldn’t hurt either. I’m not asking for anything crazy here, but let’s at least jazz it up a little bit.

2. Random Events

If you’ve played The Elder Scrolls IV or V, you know how awesome they are. You’ll just be strolling from point A to point B, minding your own business, when suddenly you’re jumped by a bandit or thrust into the middle of a skirmish. Even Red Dead Redemption had a few of these random occurrences. Stuff like this would work perfectly with a game like GTA. Putting them in multiplayer as well could also be awesome, especially if there’s rewards to be reaped from participating in them.

1. Planes

Yes, I do realize it’s been speculated based on the trailer and photos and what not that there will indeed be flyable planes in GTA V. I’m putting it on here regardless. I think this is the one thing that everyone can agree would be amazing. Saints Row has it, San Andreas had it, it needs to be brought back. Why you couldn’t fly planes in IV, I don’t know. Probably technical limitations. But let’s keep our fingers crossed that they’re fixing it and that they’ll be amazing to fly. Also that they’ll be able to do corkscrews. Not barrel rolls. Corkscrews.

So you quote-steal a whole article but remove part of it because you don't agree with it? Right, OK. Is that not up for discussion then?

"No more stranger missions"?

What are these idiots huffing? The strangers missions contained far more unique, intriguing characters than the main story. They helped frame both Niko's personality by showing his interactions with the less fortunate (Marnie) and gave the city itself more character by introducing us to its most warped citizens (Eddie and Jeff).

They were brilliant, they gave me a reason to keep playing.

Same can be said for Red Dead Redemption.

So basically, their idea of a great feature is to remove perhaps the best feature of GTA IV? What insufferable morons.

I really hope they don't implement coop in this game.

Really? So you'd prefer them to leave out a feature that could improve replay value?

I think most of those points are logical and pretty much a given. The elusive point 6 I don't agree with either. In everything it's evident that Rockstar is interested in having a strong sense of personality to their main characters, because well.. they're character driven stories and having a strong, personable lead allows them to give some direction to their open world. Being able to costumize the hell out of your character doesn't really mix with that. It's cool for MP.. but I really think as a feature it doesn't really add anything and would even distract from the GTA experience.

Random events - good

Planes - good

better sidemissons - good (although vague)

environmental variation - good

The rest is something - nevertheless interesting - I dont think would make me spend much more time playing the game.

Yes. I'd rather have an amazing singleplayer with much more detail, longer story and more stuff to do than to have a good coop. Do you think there's space in a disc for everything?

You know you have done something wrong as a developer when 8 out of 9 features that would make your game better are features that were in the direct predecessor of your game. Maybe you shouldn't have taken them out after all, huh?

Because what they are listing is San Andreas with random events. And yeah, it sounds awesome.

well if the game is going to have 4 to 5 discs anyway i wouldn't mind them adding a 6th one and its pretty obvious the game will have at least 3 discs unless its using blueray. and yes co op will make the game have larger replay value, who says you can't have a good co op and amazing singleplayer? most of the time the co op stuff are done by different teams

I dont know what is wrong with you but planes WILL be back and NO planes were not in IV because of technical limitations but because of the small map. Jesus...

Why don't you want stranger missions? They're great IMO and there are some nice characters like Pathos, Dave and Badman.

You can actually throw anything into GTA. The more the features, the better actually.

'Bout that character customization, maybe in multiplayer only? I don't play MP anyway.
