Stinky12
I have a Linksys WRT54G v5 router (about 7-8 years old) and wifi was working fine until today, when all of a sudden it became extremely slow. I've turn off/on, reset, change SSID/Wifi channel/Wifi mode/Security mode/password/update firmware and none of those options got it to work, it's still slow. I also update my other desktop's wifi drivers, thinking it's that but it's still slow. I even tried my 2 other notebooks wifi as well as my smartphone and they all do the same thing. But when I used a wired connection, the internet works fine. Using speedtest on my systems and smartphone with wifi, download test is around 0.46Mb/s to 0.63Mb/s Using a wired connection on the same exact same systems, I get 2.84Mb/s <<< that's how fast my connection is, but it's good for me. Has my router's wifi gone kaput, or what?
Wolf68k
When you did the wired test was it going through the router or directly to the modem? If you went directly to the modem then try it through the router. If you it was through the router then it might be that the wifi is dead/dying. 7-8years is a good health long life for that product and if that was the only issue you ever had then you should be proud and happy. I've got a friend with a Linksys WRT54G, not sure what version, but every few weeks he has to power cycle the router because the wifi stops working and he's been doing that since the day he got it. Stinky12
I did the wired test through my router and I turned the thing off overnight. When I tried again this morning, wireless seems to be back to normal. And 7-8 years is a good life on it. So far it the first major problem, others were just minor glitches I've encounter through out the years, where a quick firmware update fixed the problem. As for your friend's router, I know that some will mod a fan to it. Maybe it's getting too hot so that's why wifi cuts off? MIKON8ERISBACK
Don't mean to be a douche, but what's the signal strength? Repositioning the router can impact performance more or less. Has the router been moved or the antennae removed or tampered with?
Stinky12
@finn4life My wireless was working and when it became extremely slow, I can still connect with wired. How can that be a ISP problem. If it's was a ISP problem, then shouldn't both wired and wireless not connect at all? @MIKON8ERISBACK Nope, I haven't moved it or did anyone else in the house. It's been in that same position since the day I've bought it. And signal bars are excellent at 5 bars.
