Comparing screenshots to similar images in IV

First, it's late and I'm getting ready to go to sleep so I'm just going to post this and I'll try to add some more tomorrow.

Second, I know there are threads about the map details and the size, but this one is different. This thread is to compare the size of Los Santos to Liberty City using screenshots. I tried to take pictures that were similar to the screenshots and I marked the map to show the distance or area covered.

I don't really know how accurate this method is, but Los Santos doesn't look that big. Plus, there's only that one group of big buildings. There has to be a lot more that they haven't shown us.

It's not to prove anything. It's to try to estimate the size of Los Santos compared to Liberty City.

i think the op was trying to show draw distance.

how large the map is compared to similar distance shots from gta iv. i maybe way off though

The screenshots are taken at angles that provide a decent view. Taking pictures of your TV when your system is running GTA IV isn't going to help us determine anything. You have to have a proper size comparison, or reference point. Like having a pedestrian sitting on a bench in GTA IV at the same angle and distance for the camera looking at the peds on the docks. Or height above street level and a zoomed-in camera while piloting a Maverick in GTA IV (Annihilator is too big).

I know it's not going to be super accurate, but I think the size of the buildings are close enough to give a rough estimate.

Interesting. I hope Los Santos is a lot bigger than LC, but to me, it looks like it's no bigger than LC. I hope there are lots of stuff in the hills and some suburbs, wouldn't be LA without them. Then I wouldn't mind because we got a huge countryside.

Also, in the helicopter pics, you can compare the sizes of the cars. They're really close.

San Andreas was twice as big as Vice City and Liberty City in GTA 3 if not bigger. I think your "specs" are a little more than off. I'm sure San Andreas in GTA V will be twice as big as Liberty City in GTA IV. 'Nuff said!

Wrong. I used spots that show the tallest buildings in each city. The tallest in NY is 1,454 feet and the tallest in LA is 1,018 feet and Rockstar probably stayed pretty accurate to that when they designed LC and LS. The other buildings are probably very similar in height to one another.

You're kidding, Vice City is small compared to San Andreas, San Andreas is a whole lot bigger than two VC's. And GTA V will be bigger than two LC's as two LC's wouldn't make V's map the biggest R* made.

To me, it genuinely seems like Los Santos is nearly the same size as Liberty City. I'm fine with that, I don't really see why it would need to be any bigger than Liberty City.

Where did R* say GTAV will have the largest map among their games?

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created.

This isn't the same image quality so this thread somewhat moot. It's like comparing Blue ray audio to a low res MP3.

They clearly implied that it would in their most recent Asked & Answered.

“Hey guys hope everything is good over there in Rockstar. Just a question referring to GTA 4, the game was brilliant and I really enjoyed and still do, but what disappointed me was the lack of planes and jets... Can you tell me why you didn't include them, I'm sure you have a very valid reason?” – via Mouthoff

The city was simply too small for effective and enjoyable flying. It was the first time we made a high definition open world, and it was a massive amount of work to make something on that scale – we simply could not make an environment big enough for planes to work properly. Fear not, they are returning in what is our biggest open world game to date.

Downtown Los Santos does seem small when you put it that way. Here's hoping that there is still a lot of suburbian/countryside areas that are huge and not shown yet or that the view is somewhat skewed and downtown LS is actually bigger than it seems.

I don't find the size of the map that important, anyhow. The only good reason to make it bigger is because of flying (which I dare only hope will be done well for keyboards) and that will mean inclusion of varied open areas.

My point being, had they intended to make the largest map ever, they would have probably said so. Or maybe not, but at any rate it's always better to do more with less.

The IV screenshots are smaller than the V ones, the draw distance is further on the V shots and you can see more buildings and further away, to me it looks larger.

Rockstar said this was going to be there largest open world game, so i would think it would be bigger, the city even is bigger i think.

It's Los Santos and the surrounding country side - and a very big map.

They gave a very specific reason as to why GTA:IV lacked planes; the map was simply too small. They went on to mention that planes would be returning in what is their "biggest open world game to date."

That's a clear implication that they're no longer talking about the "scope" of the game (as some people seem to think their previous comment signified), but its physical size.

GTA IV looks so simple! It looked great for it’s time but GTA V graphics are a lot better. GTA IV feels like it is some kind of demo while GTA V has that RDR feel, a good feel.

Sorry for not saying something useful to the topic tounge.gif

OK, you stick with what they implied, I'll stick with what they actually said. I'm sure we can agree to disagree.

Those pics don't really compare, except maybe the first set. From the trailer and the shots Los Santos looks large enough for me. I've always pictured LA as not having that much highrise buildings, but more low rise sprawling neighbourhoods, and that's what I see in the trailer. Look at the skyline shot with the oilrig, the city stretches way into the valley in the distance. The heli-shot gives an impression of the scale and size of just the downtown area. It looks properly dense, and the parc-shot shows how far in the distance it is when seen from one of the neighbourhoods. Yeah it's big..

also that mountain range in the trailer intrigues me. You don't see it in the other shots, so it's obviously some distance away.
