GTA V/Houser trying a more realistic approach, so why not add children as pedestrians? His logic is perfectly fine.

Still, it comes down to the mentioned stigma.

The thing is, I don't give a sh*t what the media/society tells me. Never have, never will.

 

It's in my nature to care for children more than adults. For example, if I were to see 2 people drowing - one an adult, the other a child - and I only had time to save one of them, I would automatically try to save the child without a second thought.

 

Seeing an injured child hurts me more than seeing an injured adult. It's maybe because I have a kid myself that I feel the way I do. When I was a teenager, I probably wouldn't give a sh*t about killing kids, but as you grow up, you look at things differently. Well I do anyway.

Sure that isn't because the kid would weigh less? Seriously though, I'm sure most people are "hurt" more when they see an injured child more than an injured adult. But this is a VIDEO GAME. The kids aren't real. If the graphics were photo realistic or something maybe I'd understand.

I agree for the most part, but if someone does want to kill a kid in the game (let's assume they were already in a game) so what? Isn't it their choice? It's not going to make them want to do it in real life.

I've just never thought "this game would be so much more realistic if it had children in it". Animals on the other hand, would add more than just another thing to shoot or run over. A stray dog in a dark alleyway barking at you as you're fleeing from the cops. Or a startled cat knocking over trashcans late at night would add ambience & atmosphere. As well as something else to shoot or run over, or both.

 

So I don't really want kids in GTA V because I don't think it would add anything beneficial to the game.

The moment I returned to the farm in Red Dead Redemption, and with Jack Marston actually having a child ingame, it was a new experience.

 

It felt different than GTA IV. If it turns out that the balcony dude is the protagonist and he actually would have kids, it'll add more aspects to the game. It'll be more realistic, you could put more drama in it, the enemy trying to hit you where it hurts, the family. That sort of thing.

Children could give their childish, yet pure views to an argument, f.e. when Walter White's son in Breaking Bad adding his two cents, or the child of that big banker in the movie "The International", etc.

 

The Yakuza games, especially Yakuza 3 takes place in an orphanage. You deal with children's problems. There are old and crippled pedestrians as well, yet you can't hit, let alone kill them.

 

So as for GTA V, yes children could add something to the game, give diversity, but being able to kill them just for the f*ck of it: in my opnion: no.

Just to clarify, this is the reason I don't think it should be in the game. I would get more enjoyment robbing a bank then escaping in a fighter jet than being able to kill kids in a random rampage. Randomly shooting people in GTA gets boring.

Agree 100% with this. Everyone should forget their own personal morals & ethics (or in some people's cases lack thereof) and realize that with the past history of all the media BS that R* has gone through with the GTA franchise, adding killable children (i.e. anyone under 18, the typically accepted age of 'adulthood') to their games would be PR suicide. It would just cause TOO much negative controversy and people would be focusing on this one feature as opposed to all the other stuff that's going to be in the game.

 

Onto the morality side of things, I just don't think it needs to be there. Sure, GTA is an open-world game where anything goes, but IMO GTA was never intended to simply be a murdering simulation type game. It's crime-based storytelling, with a plot, characters, interactions with specific personalities that the protag connects with through said storytelling. Everything else is secondary, IMO, and I highly doubt that children will play an integral, interactive role in the story (i.e. being in more than just cutscenes), so therefore I don't see their need to be involved in the open-world aspect of the game.

 

People who use the excuse of "immersion" are pathetic in their attempt to disguise their bloodlust for just wanting to mow down kids with a transport truck. When playing ANY GTA, when you're in the heat of a police chase, or on your way to an ammunation, driving to a Burger Shot to replenish your health, do you really sit there and think "My GTA experience is being ruined because I can't run over a child while I'm driving around from Point A to Point B" ? I doubt it. And if you legitimately think your GTA experience is lacking solely due to the fact you cannot simulate the murder of a kid, you need some psychiatric help immediately.

Those are some good points that I hadn't considered. From a story perspective they could add a new dimension, especially if the protagonist's child is in peril. I just wouldn't want them roaming around the streets, whether they are killable or invincible.

Fair enough, I intended on those scenarios to be independent of one another. I was just thinking of some typical GTA gameplay to get people to basically get the point across that while we're talking about it on the forum, it seems like a big deal, but when we're immersed in the game itself and playing it, the last thing any of us are truly thinking is "boy I sure wish there was an 8 yr old to open my 12-gauge on", which means that the game is immersive enough in that regard, furthering the point that children NPC's are unnecessary.
