GTA3: San Andreas - Joypad OR Keys + mouse

GTA3: San Andreas

Joypad OR Keys + mouse

GTA1, 2 and 3 veterans know, control is everything. This means fully functional Joypad + Keyboard + Mouse.

GTA3SA has all these capabilities like every game before, but some wise knob thought why not limit their ability to work together, because of course, as we all know, everyone loves limits.

When i run Joypad, my mouse does not aim, shoot, look while running, or do anything my right arm wants fine-control of. When i select Keys + Mouse, i get these capacities but suddenly my general purpose aim shoot look while running on the joypad (right thumb stick) does not function as it just previously did, leaving me to scream: why doesn't the camera just follow me? When i turn around, i see my face and not where i am going, on what planet would this be useful? How can you run in keys and mouse mode, with auto camera follow, and if not how can you run at all? To control a game you must have all the controls available and or a camera that follows you. - I will not adapt to this programmed paralysis.

These limits are all very basic controls within the program itself. I retool this sort of stuff in other formats and languages daily for other poorly coded purposes, but here i'm useless. Some one with the skills to retool this non-option, please take the time to make a "GTA3SA full-control mod: joypad + keys + mouse". We will all look for it. I'm not alone, and I'm not going to play another minute of this until someone fixes it. there could be no point. the world is full of better controlled games. control is everything. without it what do we have?

I don't have any problem using the PC Logitech Dual Action GamePad.

Are you using a Generic Gamepad or trying to adapt a Console controller to the game?

The only need for the keyboard when using the GamePad is the [ESC] key.

Maybe you're over teching yourself?

Just a normal PS2 clone, called snakebyte Final fantasy controller, 12 buttons, 2 mini-joysticks one d-pad, and keyboard L-ALT to creep, with... the reliance of a completely incompetent, PS2 derived GTA auto targeting system that leaves me time-and-again in the middle of the street, surrounded by cops and gangsters - deserving the best of thrashings - and me toggling through locked on passers-by walking along the sidewalk, while they swiss-my-cheese, as each new retargeting fails to find the priority target, or worse fails, then leaves me spun in a direction that i've never even seen, forcing my to navigate back to my original course by the bullet trails through my blood stained corpse.

Had i had a simple mouse, point and click solution, to augment my direction, as we all used for GTA3 LC and VC, this otherwise stunning game would be superb, but now its like an alphabet with no vowels. this auto targeting system is like playing the old game wearing welding gloves - no feel for the fray. Should I play as a pacifist, or not at all.

To bad Rockstar had to favor the mouseless PS2 market, this might have been the greatest game ever made. Guess us PC'ers didn't matter at this time. Seems like the only question left is did they continue in this vain, is it divided controls and effectively mouseless from SA on through 4s and 5, is GTA dead to me? or can someone take the time to build a proper patch that I might be allowed to play this game as the NVIDIA splash screen claims, "the way it is meant to be played."

have you reasigned the buttons, if needed? You should have settings:

Setup USB GAMEPAD (Joystick) = PS2 controls.

Try buttons Before you program them (push each button during game play to see what it does now.)

< BUTTONS on right side of control:>

Button/Trigger
Foot
Vehicle
#1 or X at 9 o’clock
Jump
Brake/Reverse
#4 or Y at Noon
Enter or Exit
Enter or Exit
#3 or B at 3 o’clock
Fire
Fire
#2 or A at 6 o’clock
Sprint
Accelerate
<Front Buttons:>

Button/Trigger
Foot
Vehicle
#5 or Left High
Action
Secondary Fire
#7 or Left Low
Previous Weapon/target
Look Left – Aircraft: left rudder
#6 or Right High
Aim
Handbrake
#8 or Right Low
Next Weapon/Target
Look Right – Aircraft: right rudder
Directional Cross (not programmable)

<< ANALOG STICKS >>

Button/Trigger
Foot
Vehicle
#11 or Left Stick
General Movement
General Movement
#12 or Right Stick
Camera Movement
Camera Movement
#11 or Left Stick (as a button)
Look Behind
Sub Mission (start/cancel)
#12 or Right Stick (as a button)
Crouch
Horn/Siren
#9 & #10 Two small buttons between left Directional and 4 buttons.

Program as you will, I have used them for either radio stations forward/backward OR responses Yes/No

Note: Some of the buttons or combinations of buttons are automatically programmed. For actions.

Such as both bottom front buttons pushed at the same time when in a vehicle will show what’s behind you.

I have two USB gamepads and the button Number/Letter Assignments on them are different. That’s why I listed descriptive locations as well as numbers/letters. Numbers in are for Logitech Dual Action, Letters for the Logitech F510.

Note you may also assign the same button to a different command IF they will be in a different column.

Yes, I extensively retrain my buttons. And, Thank you for your efforts, but this is not our problem.

I am looking for the creators to build the infinitely simple patches for this game, that it may be played by everyone using the full capability of their device. And i tend not to quit until they've done so - there is a reason I own no PS2, or console game made this millennia. Rockstar, don't sell us a console game and say it's for the PC. PC is the true gamers choice for a very valid reason - Control and choice.

Two simple patches. 1) Full Controls: Joystick + Mouse + Keyboard, whatever control moves last overrides whatever else that doesn't, and 2) Gun Control: center-pointed target onscreen anytime a gun is in hand, like before, fireable when trigger pulled, like before, with no auto position change when disengaged, like before, and no limit on firing spin direction... like before. If i can see it i want to shoot it.

And if i could have a dream come true, 3) Camera Control: no more auto recenter camera. when i push the camera up for a better view i want it to stay up, all the time. Mostly, it is this "lowered" camera position, SA introduced: crest a hill and you have to look through the windshield of the car to see ahead of you, if it has a rear; it is like that horrible Shoreside Vale tunnel camera, that made their otherwise challenging tunnels so unfun to use, except now it is all the time, done so this way so that this lone problem doesn't plague us in tunnels, by plaguing us all the time; without ever realizing (you limees) that american tunnels are huge, we dont have your tiny continental flat top tunnels, our tunnel ceilings are 50-100 feet above the road bed, giant tubes, not flat boxes. Lift the camera back up, that I might see down the road, or on roof tops while driving, and of course all around me, lift it up to the standard height that i might actually see where I am going, like LC and VC before this.

Good games make every effort to work with their players not against them, and they take the time to really play the games to experience them from the complainers point-of-view, with full power to complain, not excusing one thing after another as, "they will adapt." All people want, is total control, this game has found every-way possible to remove this desire, nay right, from us. This is a truly brilliant game otherwise, an unbelievable progress from previous truly brilliant games, but the tragedy is in the failures, these changes, changes like this period are shackles. Give the people Control! we just want control.

And 4) no more rain..........lag! I love rain, but this one is horrible. And I digress, 5) stop stealing vehicles out of my garage. i lost a dozen cars in VC, most irreplaceable, and now SA just stole both my stolen military hummers, from 'robbing uncle sam'. which i did and drove them, stole them, parked them, and then... lost them to bad stingy code. So... if it is in a garage, it is mine forever! GRAND - THEFT - AUTO. The theft asks not wherefrom... Any questions? (and helos and boats, and lions and tigers and bears) If it's in, it's mine. If i can trap Bigfoot or even the lights of E.T. in my garage they are there to keep and use as i please. Grand Theft.

A Patch here, a patch there, and this could be a winner. Patchless, this game is a tragic failure, as torturous to play as it is to not play. Your PS2 servitude and missions were done the day you published, but we the PCeople demand your support. This game does not have to go down as a tragedy. Windows never does, its services its packs faithfully to their ultimate satifaction. Rockstar won't you support our efforts? Don't start something you won't finish. Give us our control, or watch us choose.

It won't happen. The game happens to be 6 years old. Only modders are remaining to try to teach the old dog new tricks. If you wan't a great PC game, don't play something that was ported from PS2.

Though it reminds me of a project that I was thinking of starting called 'GInput'. But with all the work I've got going on, it's merely a fantasy.

My OS is 10 years old, the car in my driveway is 38, I'm 41, my house is over 60, the shape of the property i live on is 10,000+ and Nary a service pack, nor paint job, nor hair cut, nor new roof, or ice age has failed to improve these "old things" or, suffered such defeatism as you spout now. Are you in the employ of Rockstar?

The controls mod is a single switch, bypassed. from 'either or' to both. I expect a versed coder could dispatch this mod is one night or less. Gun control, an equally simple switch., leave the cross hairs always on when gun in hand, and fire without targeting.

The rest is as you say wishful thinking. A very, very short list of what could be better. suicidal.gif

I bring these up to help Rockstar own up to their gross failures here, and show they care about their legacy. The control of this game is horrible, the melee capacity is abhorrent, and the tragedy is that this game is a thing of beauty, but the legacy that will last forever - unfavorably: this beauty icon14.gif is the beast. icon13.gif

::::UPDATE:::

Most of this entire questions salvation. www.xpadder.com, a nifty little program, only $9.99 through paypal or cc, that allows you to operate your keyboard (for anything) through your joystick. So, with relation to this game, I found that if I set GTA3SA to keyboard and mouse, then set xpadder to emulate my keyboard through my gamepad, by using this program to map each key to a gamepad button, I was able to operate GTA3SA with gamepad AND keyboard and mouse all at the same time, with the same gamepad feel and operation as before, but now with all three controls functioning at once. And, if that weren't enough, as though a divine gift from the great god, Donkey Kong, if i hold down my right mouse button while running, it allows me to freely target and shoot without the PS2 auto targeting getting in the way.

Mind you, I still haven't found the no rain button, or the button where the cars don't drive like they are riding on top of beachballs, or the button where delivery trucks handle based on the center of actual mass, not the center of their visual mass, or the button where that nasty prossie gets slightly better looking, or the button where i can stop listening to the same stupid street comments over and over and over. Or the button that lifts the camera to a height where i can see where i am going, or the button that makes 4 car garages actually hold 4 cars... But... I can live with this, and hope the rest of us controller freaks benefit as well. www.xpadder.com click it, buy it, smile.
