So do you prefer one big city?

Or would you like another San Andreas?

Or maybe 8 cities in one game the size of a state?

Personally... I like a large map but something you can get to know within a few weeks, and not too big!

One day the whole earth will be available in a video game. I'd play that! Very long time until that happens though wink.gif

I am happy with one major city like in GTA IV and GTA V. When you start having so many cities, they will not be very detailed, and I demand hyper detail like in Liberty City and the upcoming Los Santos. These cities come to life unlike any other video game world.

I'll put it this way: If I can play a game where there are 20 huge, extremely and equally detailed cities separated by vast stretches of beautifully crafted countryside, that would be my choice. I would love a game where even after years of playing you still find new things, I don't see the point of wanting to be able to explore everything in just a matter of weeks.

But the truth is, this will never happen. Even in a far-flung future where we can simulate an entire state to near-perfect detail, diverting the same amount of resources to just one or two cities would create a much smaller, but immensely more detailed gameworld. So I like a balance. I want a gameworld to be well-designed and crafted, but I also like it to be big, so that there is a lot to explore in free-roam.

I think we're at a point where simulating two large cities and a large stretch of countryside is pretty viable for GTA V, but any more than that and we'll see a very large compromise in quality. So I figure we're probably just going to be seeing Los Santos and surrounding countryside, but I would like there to be one other large city (and smaller settlements, but I actually do expect to see those in GTA V) so that there is a destination on the other side of the gameworld and so that the free-roam aspect feels very different from GTA IV. That's just my preference.

So what I'd love to see in my perfect GTA game would be a nigh-endless world with countless large cities and awesome landscapes and small towns in between. But that just isn't going to happen any time soon, and quite possibly never. So my preference is based on a balance between quality and quantity, as dictated by the hardware's limitations, as well as the developers' (just because far-future hardware could run a world simulation doesn't mean developers would want to create all of that down to most minute details). In this console generation with GTA V, the max for me is 2.

I feel that SA had a right Idea putting in more cities but some of the cities were boring. San Fierro is the most boring city in SA. There's really nothing fun you can do in that city but kill and steal. Las Ventures was a ok city but really only good for gambling. Los Santos had the most. I think Rockstar could make a good GTA game with 2 cities and some cool countrysides.

I once had an idea of each new GTA adding a city, towns and countryside to a pre-existing map so that each GTA expands upon the previous one. After several games, a GTA "nation" of sorts exists with about 4 or 5 large cities, some towns and a lot of countryside. The advantage would be that old players will have comprehensively learned the map with each release so it'd only be overwhelming to newcomers who haven't played the previous games. And to keep the old parts of the map interesting, updates such as new interiors, roads, peds, etc. could be added.

It'll probably never happen though, but that would be the most feasible approach to building a massive map with multiple cities in the "HD" era.

And how do you expect them to fit that all on disc? There's a limt.

If it was on PC, then I could see it happen, but for consoles, no.

bitch please. you're telling me a dual-layered blu-ray can't fit multiple gta maps? pffft

that's actually a really awesome idea, though.

It'd be sweet if EVERYTHING on GTA IV was added into GTA V, aside from Niko, his friends, and some Niko only things, with some features removed and added to make IV worth buying standalone.

the storyline would only be in the new V city but you'd have the ability to visit every previous city with the features of the last game but without the protag and some things that only make sense with protag.

ffs just realised i've essentially re-written what X said.

Right, the previous stories and contents wouldn't be carried over. The current protag's story would be based largely in the new city, but much like in SA the protag would travel to the older cities to do certain missions, side missions, odd jobs, etc. This would also expand on the aviation.

Two but no more than 3 cities sounds good. With an appropriate amount of countryside and smaller communities..

I'd just like a nice, large, Los Santos, and a fairly sized San Diego and Tijuana.

I think it would be impossible to do more than three, without sacrificing the quality & individuality that was present in every square metre of IV's Liberty City. I'll be more than satisfied if it's just Los Santos but would be really stoked if there is another city, be it San Diego, San Fierro or Las Venturas.
