Shoumaker
First damn game to sell more than CoD (finally). I would say ~15 Million in the first week (both consoles). And overall sales would be 35 Million+. Considering each game is $60 (£40), that means Rockstar makes $2 BILLION (£1.34B) with V! It is very UNlikely that the sales figures will be so high for this game. GTA V will beat BO2 as a game without a doubt but in sales we really cant say. Why not? If Modern Warfare 3 can sell 13 Million within the first week, why can't GTA V sell 15 Million? And if MW3 can sell 28 Million overall (so far) why cant GTA V sell 35 Million? It is possible, but unlikely. Cod games sucks but no matter how hard it is to admit because we get the same thing every time, theyre still the bigger franchise. But I certainly hope GTA V becomes the best selling game this gen, that would be amazing. Edited August 16, 2012 by shoumic

Call of Duty as a franchise has sold 135 Million in total and Grand theft Auto franchise has sold 106 Million. BUT, CoD game comes out every year, GTA takes time. So Cod has sold more with less games. But I agree. COD has been recycling games so they can release one every year. Hence the high sales figuers, so I see where youre coming from . Becasue gaming sales figuers have gone up in the last ten years and the COD franchise has released more games in that span. If GTA 1,2 GTA 1969, 1961, and Anvance sold lets say the amount a GTA game would sell today, it would wasily beat cod as a franchise.
MACCHUU1
5 million the first day, 15 million the first week, 20 million the first month, 25 million the first year, and 30 million overall on the consoles, now i'd say about 15 million overall on steam, so 45 million overall on all platforms, but really everyone with a console or pc should get the game. I'm probably going to be way off but I'm sure it will break some records and finally overtake COD as the biggest gaming franchise, (which I think it already has.). Finn 7 five 11
I would say GTA V will sell 5 million copies on the first day, 9 million in the first week, 14 million in the first month and 20 million in the first year. I think the game will have 11 million pre-orders. This looks like the most reasonable guess. No man, there have been 14 GTA games and 17 CoD games. If there has been 17 Cod games, why is Black Ops 2 Cod 9? Unless you are counting hand-held crap that hardly sells.

XxSea12HawksxX
I'm sure it'll break previous GTA records. After all, look how many there are of us clamoring for it and letting our voices be heard. You know there's millions more out there just like us who aren't saying a word and are just waiting for it to be released. I know GTA V will be the ONLY game I'm going out and buying the day it hits store shelves. 'Nuff said!

That wasn't the case last month, but whatever that's still sh*t compared to past years (28% down) getting beat in pre-order numbers by an exclusive tells us that CoD ain't the king of sales anymore. I still stand by my prediction. GTA V will sell more than Halo 4 and BO2 combined, just wait and see.
meson1
... Considering each game is $60 (£40), that means Rockstar makes $2 BILLION (£1.34B) with V! Rockstar do not directly sell the game themselves. There are other businesses in the supply chain such as wholesalers and the retailers. Each apply their own mark up in order to take their own cut of the final retail price. I'd be guessing that the actual amount of money Rockstar make would be closer to $15 to $20 (£10 to £15) per copy. Perhaps even less than that. I changed it from: I would say GTA V will sell 5 million copies on the first day, 9 million in the first week, 14 million in the first month and 20 million in the first year. I think the game will have 11 million pre-orders. to I would say GTA V will sell 6 million copies on the first day, 12 million in the first week, 16 million in the first month, 29 million in the first year and it'll have 7 million pre-orders on consoles. Even though Cod comes out every year, there are more GTA games in total 14 actually including V, Cod has 9 in total including BO2. So Cod has sold more with less games. But I agree. COD has been recycling games so they can release one every year. Hence the high sales figuers, so I see where youre coming from . If GTA 1,2 GTA 1969, 1961, and Anvance sold lets say the amount a GTA game would sell today, it would wasily beat cod as a franchise. With GTA V there are 15 GTAs. Here: GTA, GTA London 1969, GTA London 1961, GTA II, GTA III, GTA VC, GTA SA, GTA Advanced, GTA LCS, GTA VCS, GTA IV, GTA TLaD, GTA TBoGT, GTA Chinatown Wars, GTA V. GTA London 1969/1961 were just add-ons to GTA. GTA Advanced was just for Gameboy Advanced so not really a big GTA. GTA LCS/VCS were firstly PSP exclusives but they were released for PS2 too but they are still not big GTAs. GTA TLaD/TBoGT were just add-ons for GTA IV and GTA Chinatown Wars was just a Nitendo game so not a big GTA. So with GTA V there are 9 big GTAs but the series exist since 1997 and you can't compare the sales from 1997 with 2008 or today. GTA IV came out in 2008 and it sold better than CoD but after this game CoD was beginning to be that famous so GTA V will be bigger than everything before. People who loved GTA SA because of the endless content will love GTA V because it'll be like SA and people who loved GTA IV because of the graphics, physics and realism will love GTA V because it'll have these things. Inncognitoo
If you look at the GTA IV's first trailer on youtube, its barely on two million views. when GTA V's first trailer came out, it was receiving over a million views per day for the first week. This makes GTA V the most hyped game rockstar has ever received from the community. On average, i think triple or quadruple the amount of copies GTA IV has sold in a day. that's how many copies GTA V will sell first day.
ZoomZoom
Hmm. depends on how good the gameplay features is. But if the gameplay is good I think there is a probability of it being one of the world's est selling game and the best selling GTA.

Andreas
Sorry for bumping this topic but I think it doesn't matter as long as GTA V isn't released. Well, I often saw some discussions like if GTA or CoD will sell better. All in all it's hard to make a fair comparison because the Grand Theft Auto series already exist since 15 years now but the CoD series exist since "only" 9 years now and they're both not in the same genre so practically they aren't compete each other. Anyway I think it'd be more fair to compare the sales between CoDs and GTAs that were released within months each other. Call of Duty 2 was released on November 3rd 2005 and it sold according to vgchartz ~5.93 million copies until today. Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories was released on October 24th 2005 and it sold according to vgchartz ~10.96 million copies until today. Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare 1 was released on November 8th 2007 (the fall is a very good quarter to sell games!) and it sold according to vgchartz ~16,92 million copies until today. Grand Theft Auto IV was released on April 29th 2008 (a allegedly bad month if it comes to the sales <--That was often said in the past!) and the game sold according to vgchartz ~19.75 million copies until today. I think it'll be interesting to see/know how much better/worse the sales of GTA V will be compared to CoD MW3 or CoD BO2. saintsrow
All of us here will buy GTAV because we are faithful to the GTA franchise, with good reason. But sadly, as each year goes by without a GTA release, I think that a couple more million potential buyers fall outside the window of GTA-buying compulsion. The HD era of video games has become fairly mature now. Many people don't even know that GTA is more than a mere game structure with good graphics, even if they have have played GTA IV - they don't have the background to realize just how much more rich and wonderful a well-done sandbox game can be (i.e., the GTA series), compared to other HD games. Even Fallout and Skyrim have a rigid, gamelike structure that is obtrusive to me, as a GTA veteran. And of course, LA Noire felt like some kind of a board game with the ability to drive around a well-designed 1940's city, perhaps including a DVD of atmospheric but somewhat cliched 1940's noir scenes. Actually the cutscenes were almost the best part of LA Noire, but not worth $60 by themselves. Anyway, my point is that at least 10 million of the new potential buyers for GTAV will have to be persuaded to buy the game, in context of a huge ocean of shallow but good looking HD games. How are they going to know that GTAV has a real heart and soul? They won't, and sadly, GTAV sales will be less as a result, even though it will probably truly be the pinnacle of open world HD sandbox games with the richest, free-est, most complete set of fun (but not over-the-top) things to do, and maybe the best story that the Housers have created.
