Arsen Vitiuk
All right, so today I will try to pass the Storyline in the "Rush Mode" on PS2. My esteem is 2-2.5 hours. Even with skipping all unnecessary missions and cutscenes, I can't do less in 1.5 hours anyway. For comparison, I will be doing 2 Storyline Rushes. 1 from the very beginning and 1 using the Ultimate Starter Save I have made for PS2. Today I am using the Ultimate Starter Save. Once I finish, I'll post my results and compare it to my esteem.

Arsen Vitiuk
Recording 2.5 hours... A good idea, you know? But if I won't be able to record, I'll still be registering the time of start and finish.
Arsen Vitiuk
All right, finished "The Exchange" not so long ago. I did it! I was playing the PS2 version of the game (it's easier than PC version BTW) using the Ultimate Starter Save File I had on my PS2. So that's how it went: - I played non-stop - I didn't fail any mission - I didn't skip any cutscene - I didn't save a single time - I didn't drop by safehouses to replenish weapons - I didn't get wasted or busted - I didn't cheat - In some missions I used alternative methods to accomplish them faster Generally, to pass some missions faster, especially early in the game, I referred to using a Sniper Rifle or a Rocket Launcher (I had all weapons with a decent quantity of ammo in the save file). Generally, these two weapons were my main equipment, but I also used M16 and UZI on some occasions. The only time I used any other weapon than these was "The Exchange", where I used AK47 and Pistol. I skipped some missions which became sealed later on: Luigi's 2 last missions, Joey's 2 last missions, all of Kenji's missions and Asuka's "Two-Faced Tanner" mission. I also didn't complete any of Marty's, El Burro's, King Courtney's and D-Ice's missions, and also left out Ray's last 3 missions and Donald's last 3 missions. Now, on the times and the timetable. Timer I started the timer countdown the moment I entered the mission marker for "Don't Spank Ma Bitch Up" mission. I stopped the timer countdown the moment the credits started to roll (watched the final cutscene within the timer countdown) Started: 15:14:50 GMT Finished: 17:33:10 GMT Total time taken: 2 hours 18 minutes 20 seconds So, my esteem of finishing the game between 2-2.5 hours was correct. Which means that I adequately estimate my skills and abilities in the game. Even adding 4-5 more minutes which "Give Me Liberty" and "Luigi's Girls" would take to complete, I would still end the game below the 2 hours 30 minutes limit. Some missions could not be finished faster, like "Sayonara Salvatore", "A Drop In The Ocean" and "S.A.M". Of course, I could have finished some minutes faster, just so this wasn't the luckiest run for me, as almost every time I approached the Staunton Lift Bridge, it began to raise. This happened during "Grand Theft Aero", "Bait" and "Espresso-2-Go!". I was lucky enough to skip this occurence during "S.A.M" The Time Table 00:00 - Started "Don't Spank Ma Bitch Up" mission 00:30 - Finished "Cutting The Grass" mission, approached the marker for "Triads And Tribulations" mission 01:00 - Finished "Under Surveillance" mission 01:30 - Unlocked Shoreside Vale, starter "Grand Theft Aero" mission 02:00 - Entered the vicinity of Staunton Island after finishing "Espresso-2-Go!" 02:17 - Blew up Catalina's helicopter Conclusion: It is impossible to complete the Storyline in Rush Mode in under 30 minutes - that one's BUSTED! Andreaz1
Are you going to do it again without your ultimate starter save? Would be interesting to see the difference in times.
Arsen Vitiuk
I will. Just as soon as I will have enough free time again. Completing the game without the Ultimate Starter Save will require more effort and more time, so I'll put my esteem between 2 and 3 hours (without skipping cutscenes). Let's see how much THAT will take.

Arsen Vitiuk
Yeah I said it before it was bullsh*t to complete it under 30 minutes... Well, yes. I was playing with an Ultimate Starter Save, and didn't even finish the Portland Block of missions at 00:30, as you can see. If I would be playing without the Ultimate Starter Save, from the very beginning, it would take me some time longer than that to complete the game, and I'd surely do some less in 30 minutes. I adequately estimate my skills within the game, you see. I thank everyone for congratulating me. I did this out of pure interest to see in how much I can finish the game, and I have proven myself to myself, if I can say so. I will do another "Storyline Rush" very soon, without the Ultimate Starter Save File, starting from the very beginning with no weapons and no money. Let's see the difference between the times in the end. My esteem is 2.5-3 hours without skipping the cutscenes.
Arsen Vitiuk
Right, an update. I am soon about to start the second "Storyline Ruse" with a new game. From Zero. Expect results in 4-5 hours.
ClaudeSpeedrun
I don't get paid to play GTA 3 (I'd love to find out how that works), but I do currently hold the PS2 minimalist speedrun record at Twin Galaxies. I finished it in 1:32:50. That's starting from when you get control of Claude on the bridge, skipping all cutscenes, no cheats, no unnecessary missions, ending at the cutscene on the dam. It's cool to read other stories of people trying this though, I was kind of wondering if I was the only one left.
98 in 1
Had an unbelievably successful speed run just now, clocking in at a total time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 24 seconds from the very beginning when you gain control of Claude to the end when the credits begin to roll. I flew through all of the necessary missions as quick as possible (except Van Heist which I got busted on) and got really lucky with the SSV lift bridge (only had to stop twice). http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy165/m...01-34-42-89.jpg I am still in disbelief that I was able to complete it this fast, I felt like I was in Portland for way too long (didn't get to Last Requests until around the 40-50 minute mark). What really made the difference was collecting weapons on the go. I used only a few pistol magazines (collected from dead mafia and triads, 5-10 shotgun shells (from police cars), and a few grenades (from taking out the laundry). I am quite satisfied with this time, and I don't think that I will ever be able to top it. EDIT: The M16 is your friend, it makes a certain amount of missions go by way faster, I got a decent amount of free ammo from the enemies guys by Kenshi's casino in the mission "Under Surveillance". IvoryX
Great time friend! I made a scoreboard on the 1st page, I'd like to see more players join this challenge I'm going to try it soon. Arsen and mr6plow9 do you guys have some advices? I want to make some rules for this. Arsen Vitiuk
PC version is easier in the aspect of shooting, I have to tell, since there is a thing called 'Mouse Aim'. So PC players could easily use M16, Sniper Rifle and Rocket Launcher where console players, both PS2 and Xbox had to sweat a bit aiming it correctly. Plus, the fact that on PC you can shoot the M16 without actually aiming it makes up for sparing a tad of time every time you use it, adding up to saving several minutes in total since you are going to use it often enough. A question to mr6plow9: did you actually watch all the cutscenes or did you skip through them? Because it really makes a difference.
98 in 1
Skipped em all, and yes, due to the fact that you can fire an M16 without going into first person mode makes it extremely useful.
Arsen Vitiuk
All right, seems like I'll have to take time to count how much did my playthrough take without cutscenes. Because they take up 15-20 minutes, and it may appear that if I calculate my time without the cutscenes (and I didn't skip any), it will be very close to yours, if not a bit less. IvoryX
Okay then, I forget about the option to skip cutscenes and platform difficulty differences. The basic rules: - a Player can do this marathon on any platform (PC,PS2,Xbox,Mobile device), it only needs to be said in player's post - skipping cutscenes is recommended for saving about 25 minutes - let us know about any mission failed, wasted, busted issue EDIT: Added more info in the scoreboard Edited September 12, 2012 by IvoryX
Arsen Vitiuk
All right then, I substracted all the time that I could have saved when skipping the cutscenes and that's what I've got: All the skippable cutscenes took a total of 20 minutes 29 seconds, thus making the actual time of my Speed Run being 1 hour 57 minutes 51 seconds! (2:18:20 - 00:20:29 = 01:57:51). That's it!
IvoryX
Edited first page again, Arsen your second run will be on PC or PS2? You said this time without USSF right? Edited September 13, 2012 by IvoryX

Arsen Vitiuk
Arsen your second run will be on PC or PS2? You said this time without USSF right? PS2 run without the Ultimate Starter. But I don't think I'll have time to do it any time soon. It will be most possibly in December.
IvoryX
I think that everybody should record their run. Yeah but not everybody has the opportunity for it, we should be satisfied with Stats screenshot, and I will add it to the rules, thank you. @Arsen: Ok, take your time. Arsen Vitiuk
I will. This will be very interesting, really. And meanwhile, let's see how more players will participate. The more - the better, of course. If so, I will have more competition, and that makes more fun! Good job for taking the topic further than it was intended to! MrMateczko
I might try to do a speed-run as well, PC, standard controls, no mods, no cheats, no special saves, v 1.1... If I only shoot the heli from S.A.M. from the Cochrane Dam perfectly, and get as much M16 as well for Taking Out the Laundry. Some tips? Also just for curiosity Arsen, have you used you own taxi for Cutting the Grass?
Arsen Vitiuk
Also just for curiosity Arsen, have you used you own taxi for Cutting the Grass? Of course I did! That so much reduces the time taken to complete the mission! And it's not against the rules! So why not?

That was just a suggestion.
