RipGore
Traffic in the freeways (Yes I am thinking of SoCal/Los Angeles) should be dense and cars should reach realistic speeds. During rush hour, those freeways are jam-packed with cars; all sitting ducks. That, of course, would be unfortunate due to the lack of access around the open-world, fictional city. Unless, you can clear your way through by pullin' out yo bazooka and exterminatin' those mofos. OR, just stealin' a Hydra... No, not too convenient. Traffic jams suck both in the real world and a video game. In GTA, since it's an open-world video game packed with that touch of freedom, traffic should be limited to where it doesn't result in dead traffic jams; but instead, implement 'heavy', 'dense', and 'congested' traffic flow at least. California drivers, when not in rush hour, are typically speed demons. It's very ironic that the general speed limit in LA's freeways is 65 MPH, and it is commonly violated by almost all drivers. 10 cars go 80 MPH, and so do the others: BAM. DOMINO effect. Police can't stop them now, unless they choose the chosen one. I know this by driving LA myself. If you go too slow, you risk being slapped in the tuchis. If you go too fast, you're just as cool as the others. San Andreas had fast freeway traffic, but the cars had a few abrupt, cartoonish motions. Game animations were inferior back then of course. It's all about Cali ♥ Edited August 12, 2012 by RipGore
ANzey
I agree, however I wouldn't mind having a traffic jam now and then. It'd be cool to know that at 5pm the freeways around Los Santos are jammed, so you kind of have to take a different route.

theworldfamous
Im all for traffic jams. Me too.. I read somewhere that GTA's traffic always has to leave enough room between lanes (or sidewalks) for the player to weave through. In IV that was mostly true, so I don't mind traffic jams as long as there's always a way to circumvent them. Anyway, GTAs traffic has always been kinda disappointing.. there's too little of it and the AI is dumb as hell. It works okay in the city, but not so well on highways.. it's too bad cause you can't really make gameplay around it, like high speed bike chases through traffic jams, hijacking trucks at full speed. In IV it was impossible to have good highway chase, because all the traffic would disappear and you'd see the cops spawn in front of you, on the wrong lane in the wrong direction...it was pretty lame actually. Wayne Daniels
Im all for traffic jams. Yeah same, so I can ride down the middle of the road between both lanes of cars on my motorbike laughing at all the suckers stuck in the cars.
r0eladn
How about CREATING traffic jams. In IV when you block the highway, after a little while cars stop coming. That is not realistic and is probably because the hardware cant handle too many cars.
AuSsIeThUnDeR36
The pic showing the LA traffic looks like hell. If that is implemented in the game we are screwed because there will be gamers tearing their hair out because there's too many vehicles. There has to be a balance say for example, have lots of vehicles but with nice gaps between them so you can at least make some forward progression. Also I see Ballas are there (guy on the bridge to the left) and there's CJ on his bike!
ChillyPhilly
System resources will be the barrier to just how many cars get jammed on a Los Santos freeway.
universetwisters
I hope that if you walk across the freeway, an oncoming car will stop in its path so you can cross, which will eventually lead to an enormous pile-up, just like in San Andreas

Loves GTA
Consoles are too weak to handle that much on screen at once. Not happening.
theworldfamous
Consoles are too weak to handle that much on screen at once. Not happening. Sorta true.. but Midnight Club LA handled it quite well. I know that it had an easier time, cause it only had to do cars. But lately a lot of developers have been playing around with crowd AI. Unreal Engine has it. Both Hitman and Assassin's Creed 3 can put masses of NPC's on screen. So who knows what Rockstar comes up with... Judging by the trailer nothing too radical though. swapnil2809
I agree! Morning & evening rush hour jams would be cool. Imagine you are chasing someone and he gets struck in traffic, comes out of car and starts running and you instead of banging his car or spraying it with bullets, just run and beat the crap out of him. Similarly, your high speed escape ends at a traffic jam and you are busted!!
The__Phoenix
Why not have an option "Traffic Density 0% - 100%" ? Probs some hardware issues with that but it'd be nice I think. Because of the current hardware capacity. What you say could be possible on PC,but not on 360/PS3/WiiU. Traffic density in Liberty City (or the lack of density traffic to be exact) is the best example. Anyways ,I hope an updated in the amount of cars, traffic, a good representation of the rush hour, more NPC on the streets ....etc ,but an accurate simulation of the trafic density of a metropolis like LA is not possible on the actual consoles. Wannabe in LS
Jams at regular peak times would make planning your missions worthwhile. Want a challenge? Turn up as getaway driver at tea time and find yourself thinking on your feet to avoid gridlock. Prefer an easy ride? Do the job at 11am and escape relatively easily up the freeway. ElectricLadyland
Sounds great, it would really add a new layer of fun. Just as long as I wouldn't get knocked off my bike because the AI decides to randomly weave in front of me as it did in IV haha.
Kifflom112
People saying it isn't possible are full of sh*t. Midnight Club Los Angeles by R* San Diego did LA traffic fine, there were LOTS of cars on the freeway.
