Damn, Argentina killed Lithuania in basketball... It's actually a shame to lose to Argentina..

Twice? A shame? tounge.gif Remember 2004.

And do you remember 08' and 10'? Then WE killed you...

08? We won in 2008... That would make 3 to 1. wink.gif

Umm.. Nope you didn't?

You guys heard about this Women's Individual Epeé (fencing) controversy? I don't really know all the rules about fencing, but from what I can tell it was all tied up in score down to the last second of an extra frame, in a match that would decide who would fight for gold/silver. In that "one second" Germany's Britta Heidemann got in the winning strike on South Korea's Shin A Lam. Except, the clock didn't start, and she had more than a second.

Obviously, Shin's team disputed the decision that Heidemann had won, and the judges went away to evaluate the appeal. But if you leave the piste (that thing you fence on) that means you acknowledge the official decision as right. So Shin sat there for near enough an hour refusing to move, only to be told that she had indeed lost. Even then she didn't leave, knowing that she hadn't lost. It resulted in one of the most striking photos of the games yet:

Security eventually had to escort her off, during which she was met with a standing ovation from the crowd for her resolute determination.

This link explains it pretty well if you're not quite sure what I'm on about.

well I'm glad you included that article. sums everything up very nicely.

your post is confusing only because I don't know anything about Fencing or it's rules.

pretty weird circumstances, but good for her for standing her ground.

now someone just needs to edit that picture where she is standing in defiance of the ruling and crop in the tank from Tienanmen Square lol.gif

Read about that Korean girl and the controversy surrounding the match. It's a shame. They messed up and didn't start the clock, so I see no reason the German girl should have been declared the winner.

Not trying to sh*t on the London Olympics or anything, but all I remember during Vancouver back in 2010 was the British criticizing everything about them, yet every day there's always some new controversy surrounding these games.

yet every day there's always some new controversy surrounding these games.

really?

this Fencing incident is the first "controversy" that I'm aware of.

Nope, the British mens gymnatics team actually won silver, but during the last Japanese gymnist apparatus he was just about to dismount and the crowd put him off ''apparently'' and therefore f*cked up the routine. Obviously Japan was pissed and protested against it and they overturned GB's silver to a bronze. In my opinion even though I'm British I think it was pretty sh*tty of Japan to complain to begin with, I was watching when it happened and honestly the crowd had been kind of loud/cheering during the entire process and every athlete had to deal with it at any stage in routines. I think the Japan guy just went a little too fast with his rhythm and f*cked up himself but blamed the crowd noise, Japan had been performing poorly on some other stuff to.

At the end of it I felt bad for Britain and for Ukraine for missing out on any medal.

Here's a link, although probably doesn't explain it quite well. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18906623

eh, doesn't sound like much of a controversy since GB happily accepted the results of the appeal tounge2.gif

that whole article is just gushing about how happy the team was to have any Olympic medal at all, since they haven't won one in about a hundred years.

I hadn't heard of the incident Rebel was talking about. What I was referring to was the South and North Korean flag mix up, the hundreds of empty seats at events the Olympic committee are calling sell-outs, and the incident in Judo the other day where the one guy dominated the other guy and all three judges agreed he won, and then some official who was from the other guy's country (I believe) decided to override all the other judges decision and declare the other guy the winner. Now this yesterday/today.

U.S.A. is just destroying everyone in basketball. Why do the other teams even play?

Seriously though, Tunisia played pretty well tonight but those guys are just too good for any other team.

Mostly because they have a sh*t ton of NBA stars within their team? To be honest I've skipped most of the basketball on the grounds that it isn't a staple of UK's sporting world anyway. Therefore we aren't going to be as good as other teams which I've seen.

At least she doesn't face a death sentence for losing....

On the Olympics. f*ck it. I hate it. I thought I would finally enjoy it. Nope. Not a chance. It is boring and the commentary here sucks balls. Doesn't help that NZ has to wait until 11pm for the events, even though we made concessions for the Northern Hemisphere at last years RWC ( you Europeans didn't really think we liked having games at 7pm, 8pm, 9pm local time, did you? ).

I say, we cancel the Olympics from now until 2036 has passed. The IOC should during that time be made to set up a permanent grounds and not rely on host cities. And corporations should be removed from it, along with the professional athletes.

That dodge and strike is amazing.

The women's gymnastics last night was jaw dropppingly impressive as well. Especially the US team who took the gold:

Russia's women's gymnastics team really surprised me, for some reason I was more mesmerised by their floor performance than the USA's. By the way Rob, which BBC shows the fencing? I can't see it anywhere atm, assuming there are some events still on (are there?).

Been watching it on the website. Just go to the Olympics section in Sport and there's a live feed for everything that's going on at that moment. Just a straight up live feed from the arena, it does mean you have to put up with a lot of time between matches where nothing is happening and you've only got a locked off shot of an empty stage with some out of sight announcer trying to entertain the crowd though.

If you're really after watching a slightly less popular event in full, you're pretty much gonna have to watch online. (Or if you're fancy and have Sky, on one of those 24 channels they've put on with the BBC, which I'm willing to bet are just the same feeds as online anyway)

E: Wasn't watching it when I first made this post, but I looked and there's some on now, and the finals later. Here's the times for it. Bare in mind there's a number of types (Epee, Sabre, and Foil) and I have no idea what makes them different. I've only watched Epee so far and seem to have a grasp of it, but apparently it's the most straightforward.

It's Women's Sabre semi finals atm, I have no idea what's happening.

E2: Holy sh*t Sabre is so much more fun than Epee.

@Robinski: That's rather amazing...

I have to say I've enjoyed the Olympics so far. A few events at the moment have bored me but I guess I can't enjoy them all. I really liked watching Handball earlier. A lot more goals than I thought there would be.

if there's any real controversy so far it's the badminton / soccer games being intentionally thrown and that Chinese female swimmer who shattered the world record time by almost 10 seconds.

China and other swimmers have a history of being caught doping.

that girl was most likely cheating because world records are never broken by that much in just one Olympics.

I was happy for the US girl gymnasts. But nothing beats the drama and excitement of 96. Of course this year's team just dominated the team event, where as the 96 team barely squeaked by, it was at home in the U.S., and of course Kerri Strug's one footed landing.

I can't wait until the track and field events start. Maybe then I'll actually watch NBC's primetime coverage.

I don't remember that, but I do remember all the criticism we got from when that Georgian kid died on the luge track a few hours before the ceremony.

I read that article you posted, Rob, and yeah, that South Korean woman definitely got screwed. What a gyp.
