FCM, you have no idea what you're talking about. It's not that hard to see that, from the helicopter picture and the one with the Oil Derrick, we can easily tell Los Santos is about 2 times the size of Liberty City.

 

And no. It's not a "Re-imagined Los Angeles" It's a re-imagined SoCal. We may both be Canadian, but do you know what's beyond the Hollywood hills in real life? That's right. The City of Burbank. GTA V is guaranteed to have more than Los Santos, because it's not Grand Theft Auto: Los Santos, it's GTA: SoCal, going from the announcement press release. Burbank is probably gonna be parodied.

 

In the Oil Derrick picture, we can see the US Bank Tower far in the distance. Now obviously I don't have much knowledge of LA and surrounding areas, but does anyone know where the Oil Derrick would be, respectful of actual LA? I know it's somewhere in the North East area, as we can see the ocean, and the ocean is to the west of LA, so I'm going to say it's on the hills behind the Pasadena area? Someone more knowledgeable of the area should correct me if I'm wrong.

Los Santos is a re-imagined Los Angeles without the suburbs.

San Andreas is a re-imagined SoCal.

 

I don't know how judging by the US Bank Tower can confirm the city is twice as large as Liberty City. I could agree on "twice as large as Algonquin" though.

 

Why would Burbank be in GTA V? It's a f*cking pointless suburb. You probably know that Rockstar doesn't have much of a history in terms of creating suburbs for GTA games. And anyway, this is NOT real0life Los Angeles, this is Los Santos, and Los Santos does not go over the mountains.

 

And the oil derrick is south-east of the city on the mountains, not north-east. You can tell that by the angle they have placed the ocean.

In real life Los Angeles, the distance between the high rise Downtown area and the Port of Los Angeles where the Vincent St. Thomas bridge is located is huge. It's a huge suburban area stretching for miles. I would think that it would be quite difficult to see the Vincent St. Thomas bridge from Downtown at all in real life unless it was a really clear day and even then, it'd be a speck in the distance.

 

Now we all expect the city to be condensed anyway. Rockstar re-imagine their locations in order to create a practically sized playing area and part of this does involve taking some creative liberties with the geography. But in the heli pic, the distance between Downtown and the bridge does look to be much much shorter than I'd expect, perhaps indicating that the suburban area south of downtown may have been cut almost to the point of being non-existent.

Exactly, I'm not an idiot, and I know that right behind this impersonation of Beverly Hills, the city of Los Angeles stops - I know it's Los Santos, but I can't see them invent a whole new part of a city that's not in Los Angeles to put it in Los Santos.

Now, "our biggest open-world game" probably means the countryside is f'kin huge or there are other small major cities (San Fierro/Las Venturas)

You don't know that, actually. Your ignorance of L.A. geography (and perhaps a longing for additional major cities?) have caused you to falsely assume we've seen the borders of LS. Real life L.A. city extends beyond the Santa Monica Mountains (check a map). The San Fernando Valley (to the northwest), San Gabriel Valley (to the northeast), and Orange County (to the southeast) are all suburban areas that could still be parodied and extend the cityscape much farther than has been revealed in the trailer (all without "inventing" new areas of the city). Mountains and long distances still obscure these areas and we really don't know where LS starts and ends just yet.

And Los Santos doesn't include those typical-Los Angeles big ass suburbs of San Bernardino, San Fernando, and these places. Anyway, it would have absolutly no interest. The Greater Los Angeles Area goes over the mountains, but is Los Santos? No.

You actually don't know L.A. better than me, which is nothing to be ashamed about considering I've lived here 26 years and you evidently live in Canada. Your ignorance is further demonstrated by the fact that you write off L.A.'s suburbs as places with no points of interest. Universal City Walk (in the San Fernando Valley) would make for an absolutely stunning location in V. The nearby Cahuenga Pass is also a lovely blend of mountains and cityscape. Disneyland (in Orange County) would also be amazing.

 

All official information taken into consideration, there are absolutely no facts to support your claim that V's rendition of LS will not feature any suburbs. Unless your uncle works at R*, you really don't know sh*t in this regard. You could be right, but you could very well be wrong--we need to see more.

 

Also, why would suburbs necessarily be boring or uninteresting? Many of L.A.'s suburbs (like Pacoima or Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley) have a strong gang presence and lots of crime. Even if it was just mini malls and gas stations with minimal criminal elements, I'm still not sure why they would hurt the game. As long as there are interactive buildings, side activities, etc., any area has the potential to be fun and interesting. R* made the empty desert exciting in RDR, I'm not sure why they couldn't do the same for suburbs in V. Tall buildings do not necessarily equate to more fun or more to do, as evidenced by RDR. Try to have some vision and stop living in the past (SA).

The players want all sorts of enviroments. Sticking to just the CBD areas of LS would be unrealistic. Suburbs fit perfectly in this game seeing how the main theme is money and the recession(the housing development boom and fall).

 

Look at SA's Las Venturas, had a perfect mix of suburbs, downtown, industrial and of course the Strip.

 

I personally want to see those 'american dream' style suburbs. You know, those middle class cul-de-sac estates. Also I would love to have a giant big box store to go crazy in. Preferably by driving a car through it!
