i found this a while ago while searching through TTWO's trademark history.

It says they trademarked GTA 5 and a few others back in 2003. Im not trying to say this is when they started making it but this just shows they trademarked the names so no one could use them.

Note: GTA 6 GTA: Tokyo and GTA: Sin city possible new games to come??

what do you think.

user posted image

Whoa. It's possible that we'll see GTA Sin City and GTA Tokyo some day on the next gen

@bud23

As people who work in finance and are far more knowledgeable on the subject have indicated, there's a gap of $650 million. I don't think they need to sell 12-14 million units to make up that figure. GTAIV pushed 6 million copies in first week sales, which equated to $500 million dollars. Given the much higher install base of consoles now than early 2008, I think they can make up that figure within one week again (extrapolated to $650 million or more given the higher amount of consoles owned than when GTAIV released).

While I agree with the sentiment that overall game sales in the industry have gone down for consoles, the amount of sales of blockbuster titles have gone up, way up. Look at Call of Duty or Skyrim sales. GTA is definitely a blockbuster franchise, and to say GTAV will sell less than GTAIV is ridiculous.

Also, it is common for retailers to defer revenues to publishers. Like for L.A. Noire Rockstar shipped 4 million units upon release to retailers, and for Max Payne 3 console it was 3 million. The retailers then have the job to sell those titles over the following months, but through proper financing which Wal-Mart and GameStop can afford, they have already payed Take-Two. So they can actually ship 10 million units in the last two weeks of March and make up well over the $650 million gap.

I'm not even factoring in any $99 special editions which will increase their revenues, like they did with more recent titles.

And now I've found a mistake in your post. wink.gif You said that GTA IV sold 6 million copies in the first week which are 500 million dollar, right? Now the mistake: Who the hell said that Rockstar get the full 500 million dollar? The money must be split up. Here read it:

I thought the retailers bought out the games anyway, meaning no sales from that point on would be included? (except DLCs and mobile etc)

No, not exactly. Everyone involved in getting the game to you has to or desires to make a profit - that is why AAA games cost more when they are newly released because the developer has pumped a lot of money into developing the game. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I do know that the developers make revenue from the games that are sold in either one or both, of two ways:

One; the retailer bulk-buy's copies of a game for a fixed price from a developer; in this case, Rockstar Games; who make a direct revenue from the sale with the retailer with the retailer selling it brand new to the consumers (us, obviously). This is likely done for new or upcoming games, particularly AAA titles, so that the retailer doesn't run out on stock as to meet the demand of the consumers. This is also why a retailer may have copies of a particular game in stock a few days before it is actually released and on sale to the public.

A lot of retailers don't do this anymore, they receive the games, and don't pay the supplier until the games are actually sold, this applies for a lot of stores nowadays.

Also the money doesn't usually go to the developer, most developers are paid a salary, some place may have bonuses for a top selling game, the Publisher gets most/all the money and then feed it down to the developers for bonuses or whatever.

Oh another reason why they have games a few days early is for online as well, most retailers have an online service, and they can ship it to arrive on the pre-order date if they have it early.

Two; the retailers give a percentage of profits made from sales to the developer; with the developer shipping new copies of a game to the retailer on a near-regular basis, or the retailer making a prediction on how many copies of a game will be sold within a certain period of time. This would involve the retailer working out the number of game copies sold, the price that each unit of the game was sold at and the amount of total revenue the retailer has made and working out a percentage of the profits to give to the developer which would happen no doubt quarterly. This would likely be done for older games as the retailers get a steady flow of new game copies as they are being sold.

This is all correct though, in case you were wondering i have a rough price breakdown of where money goes from a new release game, bear in mind this varies a bit, but it sort of gives an idea.

Developer - $15

Publisher - $20

Licensing - $10

Retailer - $12

Manufacturing and Distribution - $3

Royalties - give or take

Do you know what I mean?

@Adriaan;I answered your question already, your arguments are the same wrong arguments than before.

I can´t answer two times to the same question.

Actually you brought up a new point, which was that they need to ship 12-14 million units to make up the $650 million figure, and then I showed you that historical facts show they need to ship much less (and have) to get to 650.

I do agree that the game can ship as early as tomorrow, just that I don't agree with the argument that it NEEDS to release in October or ship as many units as you say to get to 650. My point was that it only needs 1-2 weeks. If T2 felt it would release sooner, they'd have given a much higher estimate, otherwise they'll be in big trouble with the SEC for lying.

You say that your knowledge is based on years of monitoring Rockstar and Take-Two. Well, same here. And I'm sure, unlike you, I've actually been to the NYC headquarters of Rockstar and have met face to face with various Rockstar people including the Vice President of Publishing. I'll leave it at that, but I think my opinions do have some merit as well.

@Carl CJ Johnsons Brother Brian

I am not entirely sure what you are trying to show me. If you say GTAV will sell less than GTAIV first week sales, you're crazy for thinking that - especially given the growth of consoles since 2008 and the historical rate at which each GTA game sells more than the last.

As for your quote on the revenue split, which is irrelevant to what we're discussing, all of the gross and net profit ends up on Take-Two's books.

As for the quote, "Also the money doesn't usually go to the developer, most developers are paid a salary" - Rockstar have actually signed a revenue split agreement a few years back when contract negotiations came up. I believe this equated to a total of $160 million in 2010 for mostly Red Dead sales. I don't have more recent figures in my head.

I didn't see that in the topic, not once or twice. In fact, I asked you twice to link me to any articles or even rumors that said Take-Two was near or at bankruptcy in 2008. So if I missed it, please link me this post or news source of yours.

Look at the 3rd and the 10th post. Is this enough evidence that I've apologized? suicidal.gif

As the post which I've quoted you shows, I wasn't referring to your apology. I was referring to your news source of T2's bankruptcy.

I suppose that must have happened in your dreams then, because if there ever was any news of Take-Two going bankrupt in 2008, you'll have hundreds of links showing up on Google for it - especially given how much they were in the news in 2008 for releasing GTAIV and the EA hostile takeover attempt. Given the latter, I'm sure news of bankruptcy, or even rumors thereof, would have been hot news. As there are no links on Google, this "news source" of yours must have happened in your dreams I'm afraid (or the parallel universe, Herpterpia, you escaped from).

No, I visited only one site in the past for such things. This website is down now. Anyway that was years ago. I must admit I wasn't good at searching in the internet because it wasn't interesting for me. I'm REALLY active on the internet since 2-3 years. blush.gif But enough of this off-topic crap. suicidal.gif

You say this website is offline now. Luckily there's archive.org, which periodically captures and stores pages from the internet. If it was ever published, trust me, it'll be there. Of course, I guess you didn't factor this fact in.

But I'll just leave it at that as I feel sorry for all the holes you keep digging yourself.

It's been a really slow week for the Newswire. Hoping for something by the end of this month.

If TTWO resisted a takeover from another company in 2008, then they were no where near going bankrupt.

If anything, they are more likely to face a takekover if these numbers don't rise high enough with the sale of GTAV.

Yeah, Max Payne 3 marketing slows down. Rockstar posted 3 or even 4 times per day about Max Payne 3 and now it's just 1-2 time per day. smile.gif

More like maybe once a day so far this week. There was even a day this week with nothing posted.

Re: Downturn in Max news on newswire: This is probably as a result of the delay by a "few weeks" of the DLC for the PC version, which they've stated on twitter. So whatever they've planned asset wise etc., was pushed and spaced a part I imagine.

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAH!!!! That wasn't relevant AND that wasn't funny too. I'm so sorry. Anyway the DLCs don't need a big marketing campaign as the main Max Payne 3. 5 of 7 DLCs are released until the end of the summer. smile.gif
