Drummers

I'm totally in love with Led Zeppelin, and I'd love to drum like John Bonham.

Thing is, I can't. Due so, I'd like to ask you guys:

Do you know any bands that are equally awesome like Led Zeppelin (or Rise Against, for that matter), but are easier to play on the drums?

Also, I now have a Pearl Target series drum kit.

Would replacing the bass drum from a 20x16 Target to a 22x16 Export be worth €50?

Our school has a blue Pearl Export kit and I love it.

I finally just got a drumset Friday. I've wanted one for a long time, so I'm definetly enjoying it. It's a Sound Percussion drumset. Since I've played Expert Drums on Guitar Hero/Rock Band for a few years, I'm used to holding the sticks, and hitting the kick pedal quickly.

My Sound Percussion drumset is only a 4-piece, but it plays wonderful. Considering the drumset is a bit small, can I still play lots of different songs on it? Also, what are some good bands/songs to start off with?

Guitar hero contains electronic drumming I think?

Keep in mind that electronic drumkits play different than real kits wink.gif

As for the songs, I have the same question.

I can now fully play along to Pearl Jam - Alive, lovely song.

The Black Keys also has some easier songs to play which are still very enjoyable.

I've got another question by the way: is the way I've mounted my low tom on the last picture in my previous post damageable for the bass drum?

Incubus, Nirvana, and The White Stripes have good beginner songs.

As I asked before, since I have a 4 pc. drumset, are there still a lot of songs I can play on it?

A 4-piece kit should be enough for probably more than 75% of all songs.

If you're creative enough, you wouldn't even need the extra tom. Many drummers have a 4-piece kit.

But, would my setup like in the last picture be damageable?

Here's what my drumset looks like:

About your drumset, It shouldn't be damageable. Appears to be a pretty good setup.

Seems pretty good smile.gif

If you ever get a 5-piece kit, I recommend trying this setup, I love it!

Dark.

My kit is a Tama Superstar Hyper-drive that I bought a few years ago. My house is up for sale right now though, so I only have the bass drum, snare, and hi-hat set up to make the room look less cluttered. The one thing I miss most of all is my ride cymbal; it's a 20" Paiste Signature Full Ride and I freaking love that thing, especially the bell.

My next set definitely has to be an electronic one, though. The noise is always a problem, and it'd be nice to know I can sit down and play at any given time.

Something like this? Why would you trade that for an electronic kit?

That thing is a monster! turn.gif

Haha, that's exactly my kit, but mine has one less floor tom. Trust me, I love the sound of those drums and the smaller size of the rack toms. I'm certainly not getting rid of it any time soon; I just want an electronic kit that I can play on sometimes while not being a bother to the people in my house/neighborhood. That bass drum is like thunder, lol.

The thunder-thing is good, right? smile.gif

And too bad about having one less floor tom, I guess.

Next kit of mine MUST have dem second floor tom tounge.gif

As you might have thought of, part of the reason why I have my setup like I have it, is because it simulates having a second floortom biggrin.gif

Dark.

I was just looking through my camera's SD card and found some old clips of me drumming. Not sure why, but I really liked this one. I'm not really looking for criticism or anything; lately drumming is just a hobby of mine, and I just play to have fun. I'm not the kind of person who feels the need to show off, or show how fast I can play singles or doubles and whatnot. Honestly I don't think I'm that good anyway lol. But I really need to get some batteries so that I can record more recent stuff (with better audio).

I do use traditional grip when I play though. I started out playing matched, and switched to traditional grip about 2-3 years later.

What do mean, exactly? Do you want to add a ride cymbal?

I would if I were you, it gives a good contrast for verses and choruses icon14.gif

And Dark, that bit sounds very good.

I really can't drum using traditional grip, it just doesn't work tounge.gif

What's a good, cheap ride cymbal? I've noticed on a lot of drum tabs online, there are extra floor toms, and crash cymbals, too.

If you want to know tabs to song for guitar, bass, or drums, then go to "www.ttabs.com".

Hey, Exxon - Evans Edge Control heads are really good. I used it on a DW collectors kit though, so of course they are going to sound good. Good punchy sound and a lot of low end. Completely different than Remos. They're great at staying in tune. If you can't tune a drum by ear [most drummers can't, even when they claim they can] I suggest you buy a drumdial. It's the most accurate tuner I have used.

1. What kind of drumming kit do you have (picture, if possible)?

Right now I have a Tama Rockstar that gets abused. I'm looking to by a used DW Collectors Series once I can find one with a 24 inch bass drum. I have a Roland Electronic drumset also for practice. I can post pictures later.

2. How long have you been playing?

Just over 10 years

3. Any video's of yourself on YouTube?

Nope, but I should. I'm a fan of Cobus' videos, lately he hasn't been as creative but he has gained more control.

4. Do you have any 'deals' with the neighbors, regarding the noise level or things like that?

Nope. That's what the Roland Electionic drum set with headphones is for.

Dark.

Before buying cymbals online, I'd suggest going to the manufacturer's site (such as Paiste, Sabian, Zildjian, etc.) and checking out the audio clips they have. They should have sound clips for everything, such as the open/closed sound of the hi-hat and the bell of ride cymbals. If you're on a budget, I'm sure there are some nice ones you can find for pretty cheap.

As for drum tabs, I never use them. Back when I started out, I did, but now I can listen to most stuff and be able to tell what's going on by ear. Jojo Mayer is an exception. That man is nuts. I'm currently interested in getting a 14 or 16" china cymbal. I'm also thinking about changing my entire cymbal setup. I use mostly Paiste stuff (and love them to bits), but I'm going for a more dark and crisp sound.

@DarrinPA

Thanks for the advice about drum heads!

Currently I'm not in need of new heads yet, but who knows how long it'll take turn.gif

The Rockstar seems pretty good, but damn! DW collectors kit? wow.gif

You really should post drum covers or songs with your band, if you have one, on YouTube.

Ten years should be high level drumming smile.gif

By the way, I'm a huge fan of Cobus, he's the reason why I drum.

What cover of him do you like the most?

Went to a Tool concert last night.

Danny Carey was the craziest motherf*cker I've ever seen on the drums.

His solo at the end of Aenima was absolutely amazing, wish the gig was twice as long thanks to the joy of watching him play.

You're awesome! biggrin.gif

Translation: you're right, I mean which brand and model etc. icon14.gif

And yeah, the broken double bass pedal sucks pretty hard.

My mom doesn't allow me to buy anything new anymore until I'm 19 dozingoff.gif (excluding drum heads)

Good thing is: I found out that the standard single pedal that came with the Pearl kit is actually pretty good in my opinion smile.gif

Ahh, gotcha. turn.gif

I'm getting a Zildjian splash cymbal, and an "un-branded" cymbal boom stand. It's about $30.00 altogether. Pretty cheap, from what I've seen.

Nice vid, Dark! I've never been able to use traditional grip before, though.

Aha thanks! I'll be sure to post something new once I'm able to.

I think most drummers are taught to use matched grip not only because it's a more natural way to play, but because it does have its advantages over traditional. The guy I took lessons from never really taught me traditional grip (or even mentioned it, really) until I wanted to learn it. It can be very frustrating at first, but once you get the motions and feel of it, you might actually prefer it. Maybe it's just that I'm a fan of asymmetry.

So all of the china cymbals I want are over $250. That's like, $200 that I don't have. Working part-time sucks.
