Layermask method, but I used it only for the head. Body was done with polygonal lasso like most of the renders.

Cleaned some with 1px eraser, used burn tool. Added 1px center stroke for the body layer.

 

It all depends of the image. These art images are polygonal lasso, some cleaning and stroke (additional)

Check YouTube for "background removal", there are lot of good tuts.
