I wonder what would happen if you just stood there and didn't activate the traffic lights. Reload last checkpoint?

So judging from the E3 interview with one of the developers, we're looking at an Autumn/Winter 2013 release at the very earliest. I have a feeling we won't be seeing this until the next-gen consoles.

And what happens if you shoot the driver of one of the cars that's supposed to be in that scripted crash? Is the driver of the target car going to be magically invulnerable so the cut-scene can play out like they want it to? What happens if you park a car in the middle of the intersection? Or even drive into the middle of the crash as it happens? The cutscene afterwards where you drag the guy out of the car clearly would require the environment to be very precise, no random car you've added in amongst it all. What happens if I park a car in the way of where the guy is shot in the cutscene? These are the options I can think of:

A. The game forcefully restricts you to playing in a certain way, cars can't be used in this segment for example (so missions are heavily scripted)

B. The game has a huge number of scripted events to deal with all the different ways it could be played (sounds like one hell of a task to create)

C. All of that crash is truly dynamic, any car/person can be added/removed from the equation, the cars could end up crashed in any pattern (how on earth can current gen consoles do that? and how could the game make sure the cutscene will still work?)

D. What we saw wasn't really proper gameplay, more a demonstation of an idea (what I thought at first)

I'm leaning towards A now. I'm thinking the world will be open and explorable, but actually quite restricted and scripted in missions. Out of missions, you wont get the fancy scripted stuff that was most impressive in this trailer, you'll get the more standard pedestrian behaviour from open world games.

I am pretty sure that is a sandbox and you can explore whatever you like, but while playing a mission you will be restricted by invisible walls and you cannot do anything on your own until the game tells you...

If everything is dynamic that would require some crazy amount of coding.

Well, here's an interview with a Watch Dogs producer:

Many interesting points were talked about, which clarified more points about the games. And yes, you have the freedom to execute your goal however you want.

For a game to run that all dynamically would be a mammoth task. The only way I see possible is having an universal AI that runs on literally 100's of variables to perform in that way. However I don't want to rule out some crazy new engine, its not logical but the gamer in me wants to remain optimistic about it. Ubisoft have hyped this massively and for new IP congratulations! However you have to follow this hype up with a phenomenal execution. I want them to pull this level of immersion and AI off because it could revolutionize the open world gaming scene and really offer GTA some competition.

EDIT: I see that its announced as current gen. I have lost nearly all faith. Its not the graphics, they can be downgraded accordingly however PS3/XBOX360 haven't a chance of running AI that dynamically.

Exactly, it's the only way I feel that what we've been shown could work. If that's the case, the game honestly still looks like it could be quite a lot of fun. But I think there's a lot of misplaced hype.

This lessens my worries of extreme linear restriction. Good video.

I see it like this, you can complete the missions in many different ways, such as all out shootout, traffic lights and other other methods available( form the wwheel menu, looked a lot)

It is scripted in the way that if you select the traffic light hack in good time, the game will make it so the car crashed so its not all dynamic but if you decide to not do that ,the car will continue on going.

YOU have to remember this was shown on a conference were people dont have time to fully show how open the game is. They chose the method that was quick enough for the devs to show what the game is like. From what Ive seen games like far cry 3 seem EXTREMELY linear but its obviously very open, AC3 also looks a little linear with the game-play they have shown, you can say that about every game can look linear and even from the trailers of IV it gave the impression the game was very mission focused and seemed linear in the way the missions was done.

This is probably a VERY small part of the game, other missions could be much more open. With the devs saying its open world i have no worries about how linear this game might be. All i know is that its my most anticipated game, thats until the next V trailer biggrin.gif

This is no different.

I can't help but feel this is just more of Molyneux's "you can do anything" spiel.

I don't really agree with what he said but he has a good point, the game seems a little bit linear compared to say GTA (or just cause, saints row) i just hope the game won't be as boring as mafia

How can you say that after watching 9 minutes of gameplay? You should really wait till they come with more info. Seriously icon14.gif

watching the interview on the page before suggests it isn't linear and missions can be completed using all sorts of methods in all sorts of ways depending on what the players like, ps3blaze is just a whining bitch

I love how people are saying this game looks very linear and sh*t from a 9 minutes of gameplay YET FROM A 1:20 TRAILER OF CUT-SCENES people think GTA V is going to be very big, open and the next big game that will make every other game hide in shame.

Fanboys are just comical.

From what ive seen and heard from the devs, this game so far is going to be a real blast and a breath of fresh air.

Because GTAV being great is a guarantee. This is a new IP with no history of success or failure, so people question it.

Don't be ignorant - try not to look for an excuse to insult people. It's only insulting yourself.

We already know GTA V will be good because R* never dissapoints, Watch Dogs is a new IP so of course people will question it, you can't compare them

Im just saying what i see, if anything those people are ignorant for being so close minded.

From what ive seen, GTA IV was seen as a failure because of the route it took, ive also read many people say that they are not looking forward to V because of how IV was made. I enjoyed IV and still looknig forward to V but i don't go around talking sh*t about other games because it can be seen as a threat to V or Rockstar.

Because GTAV being great is a guarantee

I loved BF 1942, BF2, BF 2143 but to me and many veterans of BF look at BF3/BC2 to be one of the biggest let-downs and its like DICE gave a big finger up at what made BF so great in the past. It's blind thinking like that which causes people to be disappointed. So far I've not really seen anything to make me think V will be great, yes the trailer had some good stuff and looked promising, but nothing amazing unlike Watchdogs.

Im not looking for an excuse to insult people, im just saying what i see and that is blind hatred for a game that can "threaten" V, what makes me see this is that those insulting WD are also say its got nothing on V and V will be much better.

Im just saying open up your eyes, giving other games a chance and not always comparing it with R* games can result in you enjoying games and to me that is what being a gamer is about.

I may have come out strong, which i apologise.

I think the gameplay will be similar to Assasin's Creed, expect with modern weapons and stuff. After all, the game is made by the same studio and uses the same engine.

I've got a feeling the city will more than likely just serve as a backdrop to the story like Mafia II and LA Noire.

There could perhaps be hidden collectables, but it doesn't strike me as a "sandbox" game like GTA.

Speaking of Mafia II a lot of people thought it would be a GTA killer and it ended disappointing. I still love it, but yeah.

Watch Dogs doesn't need to be a "threat" to GTA V. It's most likely going to offer a different experience like playing Alan Wake and then playing MP3.

Blackadder.

Regarding how you can affect how scenarios play out sort of reminds me of Hitman a bit. E.G if you kill your target on stage the other target runs onto the stage at which point you can drop a lighting rig on his head. Considering that was done last generation this just seems like an extension of that, I basically see for every target you have there'll be a few fancy scripted ways you can kill them or you can just run into them and blast them.
