A Challenger for GTA V?

Treyarch may want to challenge R* by setting COD in the same location as GTA V, but it is GTA V that is going to win the war and you know it.

Theres probably like 3 missions max that take place in LA in CoD so any setting discussion here is so irrelevant. Also, in reply to the couple of comments above, I'd almost be willing to bet money that Black Ops 2 sells more overall units than GTA V does in the year until the next CoD comes out. Theres just too big of a fan base already made by the annual CoD games. And as I've always said, everyone I know who plays GTA also plays CoD but the reverse is not true.

Anyway back on topic: I think R* has nothing to worry about, if you haven't seen the comments on the trailer all the CoD fans are saying "we don't want to shoot robots anyway'', "just re-using another idea". In one day it has gotten more negative responses then GTA V (if it has any) since the trailer for the game came out. I'm not saying you shouldn't express your opinion, just don't add a unnecessary insult to it.

And they are both highly grossing games. It doesn't matter. When you go into the store with $65, you will have the choice to buy one or the other, so what really matters is what seems more interesting in an L.A perspective. You musn't assume so much. Read the back of the book first jackass.

I do. I find historical and futuristic games more interesting than those in the present, and I much prefer the Old West and Outer Space compared to modern New York or Paris.

I seriously doubt there's a lot of people out there thinking of buying a game by the city it's set in or the time setting without considering the game's genre.

If you like FPS shooters and want to play in a futuristic L.A. go for it... I fail to see how someone could choose GTA or CoD based on city and time setting.

The location and time setting inspires alot of the characteristics of the game. Especially if it's in a realistic perspective like GTA V. Obviously if it is a futuristic game, it will have much more different weapons than one that is modern. It's one of the biggest concepts and determines how most of the game will look and feel. We didn't have airplanes and AKs in RDR, that would be stupid. We had horses and revolvers. So if you don't think that matters, there must be something wrong with you, because that's one of the most important elements of the game, especially when they attempt realism with it.

I know it gives the game a different personality and different features, but what still matters the most is the game genre.

 

I like the WWII era, and the european front. But that doesn't mean I'd purchase an RPG game based on it, because I dislike RPG's.

 

It's the same with GTA. People fond of FPS shooters could be more inclined to buy CoD than GTA. The setting and place in time is just a plus.

I don't see CoD challenging GTA on the basis that they are 2 different types of games. If GTA is in fact released in November, like CoD, I can only see it going as far as who get's more sales from each set of fans, not necessarily taking each others sales but just healthy competition to see who makes the most.

I agree. Also sorry to get off topic but the date it is rumored to come out is October or sometime May 2013. Anyway, my money would be on GTA simply because as I said before, the trailer for Black Ops 2 got bad comments.

If both games came out within weeks of each other, they might have impact on each others sales. One of them would have to be delayed to avoid the other game stealing sales away.

I really doubt Treyarch chose Los Angeles to compete with GTA V. Makes no sense. The only reason they chose Los Angeles is because the game takes place in a "21st Century Cold War", therefore it is a complete Soviet invasion of the United States. Los Angeles, being an iconic city of the United States, would probably be attacked first. Also, I think it's more of a reference to Battle LA, and perhaps the real-life "Battle of Los Angeles" in 1942, where air raid sirens played that was at first thought to be a possible Japanese invasion, some went as far as aliens, but later turned out to be a weather balloon incident.

I understand the context that the OP is trying to make, and NO i don't think it is in any way a real challenge other than as a game competing for sales just like any other. I don't believe Rockstar is worried about anyone else, and they will continue to release info when THEY see fit. I'm not going to bash COD, i've played them, and they are OK. However, they do seem like yearly rehashes with very little replay value, unless you are committed to some online community who thinks they are really fighting in a real war.

Regardless of when they plan to release GTAV, there is always some other titles that they have to compete with. Fortunately for them, GTA is so huge, that it needs almost NO promotion. It would outsell ANY game if it was suddenly released with only an announcement on their website. Just look at what happened when they announced the date for the initial trailer.

Anyway, yeah, I think CoD is challenging V. I wonder how much of the game is actually set in "future" LA or if they just played that up in the trailer as a dig at V. Assuming V is release in any proximity to CoD I think V will trounce CoD.

On topic, I believe that game developers take shots at other developers if they feel a little intimidated, even if they outsell the competitor. GTA and Driver had it (I think True Crime was in that also). So I feel it might be a small subiminal in there somewhere, but I do want to say this; I do agree that the setting of the game does affect if I buy it or not. I like FPS, but only modern to slightly futuristic. Same with RPGs. Not all people like all settings of a genre.

True Grime is purely tongue in Cheek, I'm sure there's a bit of competition, but Rockstar were taken aback by their own success, but are also inspired by it, not that much worry from other game makers, since they defined the genre themselves!
