JoyDivision
this was bad in the other games too, not only that but i was playing vice city last night and i was blinded by sunset. gta was meant to look gloomy and dark but from the trailer V looks light and sunny, as though they've rectified the lighting problems from earlier games
Los Santos Pedestrian
not only that but i was playing vice city last night and i was blinded by sunset. Zee: That's supposed to be realistic effects. Unlike V which is just sh*t.

Degrees
Yeah that was so annoying. I actually spent 20 minutes trying to find were to go in the last mission of GTA 4. Oh and the option mission were you kill that Russian guy with the D in his name. I couldn't find the entrance inside the boat so spent 30 mins looking around Since LA is sunny and all I can't see it being that dark. I played horror games that were a lot brighter. Isuck100%
Okay, I'm talking about lighting in a different way here, but the only improvement I want is more dynamic lighting, including your car's headlights casting shadows in the environment. From the looks of RDR, lighting in the Rage engine had already been massively improved and it added a lot to the experience. L.A. Noire, while on a different engine, got the lighting right from the car headlights. Saints Row has also had it right since the first installment, but there's so little going on in that series' bland environments that it's understandable it was missing from GTA IV, with its intricately detailed city and highly advanced physics taking up all the processing power of the consoles. I definitely agree, I loved how RDR had shadows basically anywhere you'd expect shadows. I did get a little bugged by the lack of shadows being cast by the lamp posts in GTA IV, it's one of those things that kept the iCEnhancer mod from making it almost completely photoreal . RDR also improved on the front the OP was talking about as well. If you have the settings right, pretty much everything looks right, with night looking maybe a bit too bright sometimes but that's okay, because that way you can see. What RDR did was have the lighting adjust the way eyes do, so that when you take out all the lights in a room at night (which is a pastime for me, unfortunately), it will adjust and make you able to see clearly in the dark, when before the shadows looked nigh-pitch black, like the way our eyes adjust in real life. It even adjusts based on where the camera is pointed, so when you're looking into a dark room it's adjusted so that you can see clearly, but if you turn around and look into a light bulb, it will adjust again, making the light less bright and the shadows really dark again. I think GTA V will do the same thing, basically. Shadows shouldn't be that dark during the day outdoors, anyways, but if you are in an area that's really dark, it adjusts to make sure you can see clearly, no matter what lighting conditions you're in. I definitely like that they kept the godrays from RDR in GTA V, as well. Looks damn amazing. :'D Edited May 2, 2012 by Mr. Darko
œaœa
PS2 version of San Andreas was the most realistic when it came to lighting and particle effects. IV had a sun haze in the beta version but idk why they didn't keep it.
73duster
All we have at the moment is a single trailer, but it already looks light years better. Also, judging by RDR and L.A. Noire, Rockstar has really polished up the RAGE engine and lighting for all of their projects. Max Payne 3 looks amazing as well, and in 2 weeks we can see how far Rockstar has come in terms of graphics and overall lighting.

I fully agree. 100%. As you mentioned, LA Noire isn't a RAGE-powered game, but it was a graphical powerhouse either way and something achievable for V this generation. GTA V can and hopefully will build on the graphical achievements set by Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3. It looks as if MP3 is going to bring in bump maps for fabric textures, so this will be another graphical step further. Improvements and tweaks to the RAGE engine will ensure that Rockstar are able to find new ways of balancing the massive amounts of physics and environment code with graphical code - if I've got that last bit right. Claiming that you're making mistakes because you're on a state of the art iPhone or iPad doesn't make any sense at all. It has predictive text and spell checking to help you. You get more help than most people have on their computers. You don't have any excuse whatsoever. P.S. This is somewhat a tongue in cheek comment. Don't take it that seriously. Anyway </offtopic> There was a thread about this very subject a few months ago. Opinions about lighting at night varies widely. Some people think it's fine. Some people think its too dark. And there are some people who think it's still too light. Then when those that thought it was too dark altered their brightness settings, they found that it made the day time light levels all wrong. I would suggest the following solution. Simply have separate brightness settings in the options screens for daytime and night time. And have a bit of whizzy intelligence in the game to work out what brightness setting to use in transitional phases such as during dawn, dusk and other times when you might have reduced lighting such as during poor weather or if you're in a dark building. That way everyone is happy. Edited May 2, 2012 by meson1

spaceeinstein
I did get a little bugged by the lack of shadows being cast by the lamp posts in GTA IV You have to increase the shadow quality setting if you want lampposts and headlights on characters to cast shadows. Miss Darko
I did get a little bugged by the lack of shadows being cast by the lamp posts in GTA IV You have to increase the shadow quality setting if you want lampposts and headlights on characters to cast shadows. I can't do that on consoles. Why the assumption that I play on PC? EDIT: Probably because I mentioned iCEnhancer. Silly me. Well, I haven't seen any GTA IV video where the there are more shadows than on my console version. They're sharper, but I don't see the lampposts casting shadows and such like they do in L.A. Noire (I know it's not a RAGE game), or even in RDR, although RDR having better graphics didn't surprise me because it's far more sparse. I'm not sure about it going further than Max Payne 3. MP3 is a linear shooter game, it's not open world (as I'm sure you're aware). As such, it can devote more resources to the graphics, and the cutscenes that don't require loading. It can have more detailed character models, as well as utilize more elaborate shaders. So GTA V will probably build on RDR, but I wouldn't expect it to look as good as MP3. Edited May 2, 2012 by Mr. Darko

Slamman
Sadly, I doubt they'll use Rockstar SD's environmental effects, but hopefully they'll take some programming tips to merge with that, since there's little argument as to how fantastic a job they did! countrymike84
Judging by the new screens, I will have to say the lighting has greatly improved from GTA IV to GTA V. The difference is like comparing night and day. The boat screenshot with Franklin has such amazing lighting detail in it.
