But it wasn't announced before the game was out.

Well smth was announced before as I remember, or that were pre-order DLCs?

We'll find out on 15 May how solid or cut MP is.

Wait, when did people start considering GTA V vaporware? R* can go for a rather long time not saying anything about a game. So far, we've seen one, really detailed trailer with what looks like a near-finished product, although it may very well not have been. However, it's well into development, it even has voice acting in. We've had a long silence since then, but that's due to R*'s desire to keep MP3 in the spotlight.

After MP3 comes out, even if it's a month or two after, I guarantee we'll start seeing stuff on GTA V. It will have a full-fledged marketing campaign that starts this year, if the game doesn't come out this year. It might also get delayed, that happens often, but it won't be delayed for an entire year or several years; it'll be for several months. But that doesn't even push it to 2014.

Jeeze, it this all it really takes to make people start honestly thinking a GTA game could ever possibly be vaporware?

Ah, I got a reaction, thank you smile.gif

Actually i pretty agree with most of you say here and I do expect the floodgates to open as some point with great GTAV info. And I care much more about the quality and completeness of GTAV, versus an early release date, as do most of us here.

HOWEVER, here is my new thinking on this situation: I think that Take Two Interactive is calling the shots now. Regarding these marketing decisions, I suggest that Rockstar is not in the picture; they have no say.

So, behind that little sound bite, "GTAV is vaporware," which i copied from Racecarlock, is a feeble micro-attempt to create a buzz in the community, that will perhaps force the hand of Take Two, to wake them up. What if the gamer community started the chant, "GTAV is vaporware," like DNF, and starts to impinge the credibility of Take Two? Would that make them get off their butts and give us some GTAV info sooner?

Or more likely, this little screed is a typical example of delusions of grandeur brought on by the recurrent fever dream of the last 6 months of coming to this forum every day, and finding ... sob ... disappointment, no new info cryani.gif ...

In context of talking about DLC, here is a thought: Since GTAV will have such a long lifetime until GTA6, I think it would be cool if Rockstar kept contunually doing small additions and changes to the GTAV world, updated over the net, to keep it fresh and living over the years and give us new things to look for in the city and out in the countryside.

What I am thinking is like a continuous DLC, maybe (if necessary) a low-cost subscription service, that would be worth Rockstar's time and effort to keep the GTAV world interesting and evolving over its whole life cycle, so we would not be bitching so much about the looong time until the next GTA.

Related to this, here is an announcement of a new xbox 360 subscription service: http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/tec...html?tid=pm_pop

Maybe the GTA updates could be a small part of a more general game subscription service.

When ever I hear the word DLC I just cringe thanks to greedy publishers like EA, Epic Games and Codemasters. I would love Rockstar to not produce crap and overpriced DLC but idiots will spend £5 on a weapon skin so of course companies want to exploit impulse buying.

I put it on my mental vaporware list because it's easier to wait that way if you don't expect anything ever. Somehow for me, that makes it easier to wait. I had done the same before until the announcement came, so when it did it came out of left field and then 2 weeks later I'm enjoying the trailer. I don't know, things just seem to happen when I stop expecting them to happen.

they got a fair bit of flak for holding back stuff for the DLC (IE: Civilian Buffalo.) and R* have also stated (though I no longer have it saved) that they will likely not be putting out more large DLC pacsks to the magnitude of TLaD and TBoGT.

Likely we'll see small mission packs, weapon packs, car packs, little things like that. changes to NPC's and the vehicles to make the city feel more alive, changing posters, signs, stuff like that.

That wouldn’t bug me, little additions added over time as the developers think of them, to extend the life of a game is what DLC should be used for, I don’t want some subscription service though, just release cheap little packs every few months after what ever expansion pack style DLC they have like EFLC (if they have something like that) that anyone can get at anytime with out some subscription thing.

Unless that subscription is the DLC cost is what you're geting at, only it continues over time, and just gets updated to the file overtime, then I wouldn't have an issue with it, but if it's a subscription price on top of a DLC price than no.

I just hope they don't do any multiplayer dlc, unless its something for free mode because everyone stops playing other modes after a year or two from release.

  • 4 weeks later...

Ironically, this topic had no discussion after we actually found out how MP3 DLCs are to be sold and what they contain. So, now that we know that the model for MP3 is a $60 basic game plus a $30 Season Pass for unlocking multiplayer maps, I just thought I would ask:

Will the $60 basic game GTAV have a $30 "Season Pass" annual subscription model for DLC? What are your thoughts?

It seems like Rockstar might use the same subscription model, although I think it would not consist of maps, but rather additional game objects, characters, missions, minigames and multiplayer enhancements including story tie-ins. I would pay $30 each year to ensure continuous fresh new GTAV content for the next 5 years until GTA6.

A $30 annual GTAV DLC subscritpion also seems like it would be a good business model for Rockstar - enough income each year to create substantial new content and keep a large development crew busy full time for several years.

$30 dollars a year? That's dirt cheap by most people's standards. I already have a bank account with a functional bank card. Once I get my dream job, I'll be in the green and then some! By the time GTAV DLC is released, I'll probably be 18. Im turning 17 in June.

Well Rockstar is just doing what all other developers and publishers are doing already.Luckily it is Max not GTA where they trying this experiment so if reaction on MP3 be vocal, then some things could be fixed for GTA V.Also so far Rockstar was fair with fans and all games on this generation get Complete editions,so if you are little patient you could wait for such editions for MP3 and GTA V.

They did this same sh*t with LA.Noire already. RDR DLC was stupid too.

In my opinion the DLC of RDR wasn't bad. It was clearly unrealistic but nevertheless funny.

GTA V's DLC needs to be on the same level as EFLC otherwise I'll feel a bit annoyed. However a trainer for the console version once you've earned it would be cool.

I'm not sure why some of you are so worried, if there is going to be small DLCs. If the base game is long and vast you can easily limit your purchase at that. I don't see the value of owning every bit of GTA games there are available. It sounds as if you were junkies, and that you just MUST buy everything that has GTA on it.

The development of the industry is just in a state, that you must get more money, so that you can afford to keep the best people working for you. These small DLCs don't take that much time to do, and have therefore lots of value for the firm. It's the market economy: nothing is free. If you give something free, it hurts the firm in financials. The things the firm gives for 'free' are marketing.

Give me a break, that's just plain and utter bullsh*t. They're just f*cking greedy. R* at least invests a lot in their games, but most "developers" just rehash the same bloody content over and over and over again. Like the "acclaimed" Call of greed series. A new game every 12 months and map packs for 10-12€? You have to be kidding.

DLC should ONLY be another separate storyline with different characters.

Mafia 2 was a failure because they took features which were meant to be in the original game

and tried to make extra money by trying to sell it through DLC. In the end the original game was not great and so they ended up failing with both the original and the DLC.

All features should be in the original game. We shouldnt have to pay extra for stuff that is expected in the original. I will only buy DLC if the original game is 10/10.

They didn't even release some of extra features which they took out of the game. As a Mafia fan, I was disappointed to find out they removed great things such as the drag strip.

There was supposed to be a race track/drag strip which you could race on, but they took it out of the game. Why would they remove something that awesome?

My opinion is they pushed Mafia2 as an unfinished product because they were expecting to make enough money as is. Plus the DLC nonsense which obviously always has great profit margins as otherwise it wouldn't be plaguing the modern gamin market.

Well i hope that R* makes a V verison on EFLC. That was the best dlc ive seen in awhile imo . They could also do weapons, cars, hell even map extenctions. That would be pretty wild.

They should have San Fierro and Las Venturas in DLC form.

Kind of like the old Midnight Club South Central DLC, which map expansion was free by the way.

or GTA V: San Fierro & GTA V: Las Venturas where we get small story for each one.

I will be very upset if they do DLC in the same form as they are with Max Payne 3, announcing DLC two weeks before release(if thats true) leads me to believe they were working on separate DLC during the development progress, which is absolutely disgusting and should have already been put in the game.

Dan Houser said he doesn't like large episodic DLC in an interview, if anyone would like the source I will find it, so don't be expecting big DLCs like Ballad of Gay Tony again for V, however the Episodic content, to me, felt like things they didn't have enough time to add into the core game. Both DLC's brought new features, such as the Gang Wars and then Parachuting, which have always normally been in the core games. It also improved the abysmal selection of helicopters and their arms, and added what we all want, brand new cars.

I can see Rockstar releasing around six small dlcs for GTA V, all of which will contain brand new cars and possibly missions for the single-player, however what you have to remember is they are limited to offering car packs, as we al know people would go into uproar if you couldn't drive the new cars in multiplayer, so how would they make it in multiplayer so others can see your DLC car, but they can't enter it to drive, but can only enter as a passenger?

So yeah, that is what makes me feel car packs would be out of the picture, I personally would be angry if I couldn't drive my new cars on multiplayer.

Houser said, like I already stated, that he doesn't like large expansions, so there is new islands ruled out, and new huge campaigns.

What could they offer as DLC? It is hard, I think we will see a focus on multiplayer items however, if they make multiplayer even more advanced, where we can buy houses and clothing items and such, then they could offer us more clothes for both multiplayer and single player, who knows.

Can't wait to see what they come up with anyway

EDIT: Things they definitely should not offer as DLC.

- Multiplayer perks

- Multiplayer advantage over others

- Multiplayer weapons(no way, don't let people buy power)

They have to be careful with what they offer if you think about it, the only thing I feel is acceptable in multiplayer is new clothing items and cars, if they offer weapons(which I will not buy) I will get pretty pissed.

Different type of game different division of R*. Even if there are map packs they will be extremely cheap, north knows they wouldn't be able to charge much since we already have the full map to play around with in freemode. I do think we will see lots of character customization DLC and maybe special paintjobs for cars but i'm sure they will pull through and make another episode or 2.

So if all dlc will be £10 does this mean no more 'episodes'. Personally I enjoyed eflc, the characters were great and I loved the new cars and features such as parachutes.

Yes, MP3 DLC consists of a series of multiplayer map packs of areas that I think are already in the game. The initial multiplayer in the game consists of just 4 maps from the MP3 world, I think. I assume there may be some associated new multiplayer game scenarios with these maps?

http://www.nowgamer.com/news/1389353/rocks..._still_tba.html

And the means of getting this incrementally-released DLC is by buying a Rockstar Pass that is good for the rest of 2012. So the DLC is making the game is start to look more like a subscription service, and with big crews, it is starting to look more like an MMO.

Anyway, I don't think GTAV DLC would have map pack releases, because it is already an open world sandbox. I am hoping that Rockstar does give us long term, substantial new game content over time, for single player as well as multiplayer, that takes advantage of the big GTAV world and gives us new things to do for years, if it is a subscription model.

@Jakee, you listed a whole bunch of good thoughts in your post above, just the kind of discussion I think we should be having about the possible nature of GTAV DLC.

I wasn't talking about Max Payne...I was talking about MultiPlayer.

You get DLC like that for games like CoD/BF. New maps/weapons/perks. If we get that sorta stuff for GTA V then they can stick it.

Rockstar does admit that the expansion packs were critically acclaimed, but had an underwhelming performance. I really hope this doesn't discourage them from releasing actual expansion packs for GTA V. If they start talking about tiny map DLCs as it's coming out, I'll be disappointed, but I'll probably just not buy the DLCs.

GTA is the last pure experience we have in the entire gaming world. Please don't ruin it with tiny DLCs, Rockstar.

To be honest, I'd rather V DLC consist of a bunch of competitive map packs I'll never play than substantial content that should have been in the original game.  I had to buy TBOGT for parachutes, tanks, and more guns, even though I couldn't care less for the short, non-immerisve story and protagonist.  TLAD was even worse--a whole big DLC just so I can shoot a shotgun off a bike?  If R* wanted to f*ck me, I'd rather have it go down paying $4.99 for a new weapons set than $19.99 for a new weapons set and story/protag I couldn't care less about.  The fact that the new features and elements in the Episodes were not integrated into the vanilla game was a major FAIL on R*'s part.  I'm glad MP3's DLC won't be something I'll miss.  Still, I fear for V.

I agree. Sign me up for content-based DLC, as R* has shown that it's "mini story" based DLCs are not worth purchasing.

After initially purchasing TLAD and TBOGT, I was ecstatic. The idea of diving into two immersive storylines along with the addition of new features made me think that R* had created the greatest DLC bundle imaginable. Unfortunately, all I had truly bought are half-assed and deeply flawed products. To my surprise, both stories were short and shallow, and I eventually came to the realization that I had simply bought TBOGT for parachutes and new weapons. TLAD meanwhile, well I can't even come up with an excuse of why I bought it other than it featuring a slightly better storyline than TBOGT.

Ultimately, I feel like by taking what was probably five minutes of their time to write a couple underwhelming stories, R* had conveniently devised a way to charge $19.99 for DLC versus $4.99. Bravo, R*, bravo...

I'm amazed people actually have the nerve to complain about the length of TLAD and TBOGT. Honestly they rival most FPSs for length. Did you expect another 30 hours out of each? As far as I'm concerned EFLC and Undead Nightmare are examples of DLC done right.

I'd be a bit disappointed if R* charged for individual features. Who knows. Maybe SP will be so big the only DLC maybe MP related.

I agree with you, Miamivicecity. Personally I'm just shocked that people actually advocate the release of short and overpriced maps, weapons, etc. instead of full blown story-focused expansion packs.

I respect everyone's opinion, but really, saying TLAD and BoGT were bad because of their stories? The story was the main point. They linked the three games together, and created a unique experience while providing new features. It's people who don't even try to appreciate the expansion packs with effort put into them, and instead buy overpriced map packs, that (wrongly) convince developers that it's OK to provide crappy DLC.

Which is why I think that gaming is only ever going to go down from here. I hope we will get a few more "complete" experiences that can be played right out of the box and don't NEED any purchases, before it totally hits the fan.
