ryan_J Posted April 30, 2012 Share Posted April 30, 2012 About 35 minutes ago I was laying in bed and I noticed a very strange flash in the sky for about half a second it happened repeatedly over the next 25 minutes and then all of a sudden it started raining heavily, I thought it may have been lightning but there has been no thunder and the sky was clear before it was raining. I called my friends and they have noticed it too, the last time it happened was around 3 minutes ago! It's not lighting! SmC12 Posted April 30, 2012 Share Posted April 30, 2012 It doesn't always have to be raining and cloudy to be lightening, just as long as the air and humidity is right (yeah something like that..). And it may just be far away, or the wind direction may be preventing you from hearing any thunder. Judging by the odd warm and wet weather the UK has seen recently I think conditions are probably perfect for lightning, it's certainly been forecast alot lately. Oddly enough that person who mentioned seeing the flash also commented on a strange sound that followed. Crokey Posted May 1, 2012 Share Posted May 1, 2012 It could be lightning, more specifically Staccato Lighting, I've experienced this once before where the lightning itself is of a very low intensity and you don't really hear a rumble. Or it could either of the other lighting phenomenons of Sprites, Elves or Blue Jets, which have happened at such a large distance away but due to their extreme height in the atmosphere, look like they have been close, when looking out to the Horizon. AlexGTAGamer Posted May 1, 2012 Share Posted May 1, 2012 My internet search for people reporting on these flashes has come to an end now as I've found 3 videos that have been recently loaded onto YouTube within the last few minutes of lightning bolts in the skies above Essex, Kent and Cheltenham.
