What does "A bold new direction" exactly mean?

East. The bold new direction is East. Every game moves West. The first unlocked area is always the Easternmost, and the missions move West (except for SA, where it moves in a clockwise circle).

This time around, we will start on the Westernmost island/area, and move East.

The bold new direction for GTA V is East.

Hmm, interesting theory, I never thought to take that statment literally...

You just just be on to something buddy!! Have we ever gone south? Starting at the north edge?? That would be a complete turn-around!

Quite bold indeed!

Neo Arcadia

That "Bold New Direction" thing keeps bugging me.

We're going back to a familiar city, in the exact same time period as the last game, with yet another reluctant protagonist, and will see the return of *some* features lost in the transition from SA to IV... That is the exact opposite of a bold new direction.

They better have some mind blowing secrets if they want to back up their statement.

Okay the game is set in modern times. How is that the same time as the last game? The city is re-imagined, it's not the same. We barely know the protagonist(s). And you don't know what features this game will have besides crews and planes. whatsthat.gif

For me, I think it means they're taking all the best aspects from every previous game and then turning them all up to 11. The story will be better than ever, the map will be huge and yet still be very interactive, the atmosphere will resemble our time but still change depending on whether or not you're in a rich/poor area, the satire will be fall on the floor funny, there will be more of every type of vehicle than ever, we'll have an incredibly diverse range of pedestrians to hit and they'll all have a huge range of interactions both with you and the environment, the physics will be the best they've ever been, there will be a ton of activities, and so on.

That's what I think anyways.

Well if we take it litterally the last GTA game was based on a place in the North Eastern US, where as this is based off of a location in the South Western US...pretty big directional change there.

But for real I just think it's marketing terms for bigger and better than before, nothing else really.

Well it's supposed to be a 'bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer'. What I think it'll be:

Open-world freedom: This could mean all manner of things. A return to the varied sidemissions of San Andreas? A bustling outdoors with something else to be found around the corner à la Red Dead Redemption? It might simply mean that the freedom with which we've been able to finish missions has been made even greater. Every building's rooftop may now be accessible for example, so that if you want to snipe your way through a level that becomes a viable option.

Storytelling: The big changes in GTA IV's storytelling were the multiple viewpoints and the choices the player could make. I would expect R* would want to take that successful experiment to the next level. The game might feature the multiple viewpoints within one game and the choices the player can make might be even greater. Perhaps instead of the final three missions being decided by the choice you make, the whole second half could now be different based on a decision you have make at the half-way point. This might even influence the multiple viewpoints, killing of one of the playercharacters and replacing him with another one.

Mission-based gameplay: The way the player gets the missions in GTA hasn't changed much over the years. Perhaps here, with GTA V, things will be different. Like GTA2, the willingness of characters to give you missions might be based on how you're standing is with their gang. Kill a lot of Korean mobsters and the mission from Yoon Myung (random Korean name) will dry up. Killl a few of their rivals and the offers from Yoon will come again. Do some missions for him and your relation with him will be even further restored. The way the missions play out hasn't changed much either. It's always very linear. What if certain actions during a mission would branch the gameplay? If you do A you get in a car chase, if you do B you're cornered and have to make a stand, taking out enemies until they're all dead. You'll eventually end up with roughly the same result, but the way you did it and the location you end up might be different.

Online multiplayer: Either something to do with co-op, an evolution of MP3's dynamic multiplayer campaign (who wins results in what the next game mode will be and where) or an evolution of IV's free mode with it being more or less the same as singleplayer free roam but with 16-32 players.

A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present day Southern California.

That narrows it down quite a bit. We've seen the graphics, so we know that's not. We know they're not going to change the core gameplay so it has to be something to do with mission structure and giving it more open world freedom. I hope so. Cause that was the single most grating aspect of IV: the way missions were handed out.

-One at time. Huh, why? That's not interesting. Why can't we mix it up? That way you spend less time driving back and forth and you can plan a route. It makes menial tasks less menial because you can combine them with bigger jobs and have much more interesting story-arcs where you work towards the bigger, climactic missions. The game would be less of succession of faces that tell you what to do and send you off to the next one once you've outlived your usefulness.

In-depth economic system. Property management. In-depth drug system. Massive map. You're friends will be able to jump into your game at anytime.

I have a feeling it just means it's either gonna be really really big, or you'll be playing through multiple protags

Of course I could be completely wrong and chances are I possibly am but speaking hypothetically this would be my guess.

"a bold new direction in open-world freedom" - Multiple protagonists. The trailer suggests that to me and it would be something new for a open-world game as far as I know.

"a bold new direction in storytelling" - Different choices you make through the game effect the story and possibly it's outcome.

"a bold new direction in mission-based gameplay" - Switching between characters and the choices you make in missions will take you down different paths opening new missions that you wouldn't have got if you made another choice.

"a bold new direction online multiplayer," - The money and stuff you get in single player will be tied to your online character. There will also be mini missions and gang hideouts in free roam making it just like the single player experience but with real people.

CaptRobau gave a more detailed view on this that sums up my thoughts well. wink.gif

Yeah pretty much this. Except the multiplayer, for my opinion.

Multiple protagonists.

Please no!

I'm assuming it's just a marketing phrase. Not much to it. Just to get fans exited and talking about the game, as clearly it had.

I think either:

Coop missions (online).

A sophisticated money system

Multiple protagonists.

Something else.

Or maybe the bold new direction is less cities (only LS), but way bigger and more scaled just as how real life is.

Perhaps the Bold New Direction will be the story progressing regardless if we pass or fail a mission.

Say we have our very first mission. The mission is to get a stolen car to a hideout. We pass it, the story then branches to "Route A". This opens up a set of missions. Had we failed by blowing up the car, we would have gone to "Route B" which would have had a different set of missions.

Those missions would have also varying routes if we passed or failed them, too.

If you played WWF No Mercy on the N64 and remember how story mode worked in that game, imagine that branching story tree but absolutley huge.

I think "Bold New Direction" is just a pocket of hot fart. It'll be what we expect it to be. GTA but with dogs and planes.

True Crime: Streets of LA had this for the PS2, so, with V being in LA and all, and San Andreas having billboards up satirizing True Crime, it is neither a bold new direction or a good idea as they'd be seen as copying a game they've mocked in the past. As well as that, with IVs 35+ish hours of gameplay, and hundreds of missions, it would currently be very technically difficult the achieve, unless you want to have around a 10-disc V lol.gif

Not saying it isn't possible, perhaps in the last few missions they could have something like that, to create multiple diversely different endings, but it'd be very unlikely to see the whole game done that way

I'm sorry if this topic has already been covered (which is probably the case with you guys) but how they're describing it as a bold new direction has piqued my interest. Do you guys think this could be mission-content-wise, general gameplay mechanics, major engine changes/upgrades/differences etc? Tell me your ideas happy.gif

Personally, I noticed a strong rich people vs poor people theme within the trailer (people in skyscrapers and condos and then field workers and bums/foreclosures in the next scene) so my guess is that money management will play a part in it, no more having obscene amounts of cash at the end of the game. Always scrimping and saving for your guns, saving for homes (and businesses, hopefully)

Well my speculation is that the "Bold New Direction" maybe referring to the gameplay and realism.

Gameplay would just mean a larger amount of activites you can do and abilities that you have.

Realism in the sense of a living breathing city.

I think they just plan on making it as immersive as possible.

lol yeap, I realize that my suggestions are rather extreme for GTA.

However, A Bold New Direction, anything could be possible.

lol apart from them making GTA V a Top Down game again.. lol that would never happen.. dozingoff.gif or would it..?

EDIT.

Nope, it wouldnt, it wouldnt be a "NEW" Direction if they went back to GTA 1 style.

Hmm, It would also not be a "NEW" Direction if they went to their wackyness of previous GTA Titles.

The key word here is "NEW", What has Rockstar never done with GTA before?

Maybe you are overthinking it.

It can be that they go back to sa style with the seriousness and quality of gta iv. That would be something new for us.

Well, the fact that its called GTAV and not GTA LS or something makes me think that R* have made major engine changes. These changes could impact gameplay, visual representation or maybe they have added something totally new that will change GTA as a series. Hopefully it will be for the better. Time will tell.

Spider-Vice

I think a bold new direction means they've changed a lot in what GTA used to be, I'm up for moral choices in the story, new graphics and new personalities but just NO multiple characters, I think it sort of ruins the GTA feeling, but if there are, they'll get my money anyway.

"A Bold New Direction" means...

Well I actually think it is a complete new and major thing, such as a quite big map, movement, graphics and a lot of other stuff, what else could I say?
