PlayStation 2 12 years old

Right, 12 years ago the PS2 hit the gaming world in 2000 with a huge hit games like Grand Theft Auto III (2001), Ratchet & Clank (2001/02) and many more through out the years, with sequels and a first in the series games on the PS2. And I want to discuss about the 12 years of the PS2 iconic life and will the king of consoles continue until the PS4 release in 2013/14 or not.

Also talk among yourselves about your past time with the PS2 and share great moments of the console, and if would like to see the PS2 last for another 3 years to mark 15 years of the only 6th Gen console still around in the game console world (if it does though)

I remember receiving my first PS2 all the way back in 2003. I can't believe it's almost been a decade since that happened.

It might be because of my age, but the PS2 holds no real special place in my heart. It's not the console I "grew up" on, as a small child at least, and it's not going to be the one that'll be my last. It's kind of like the second new place you get after moving out from your parents'. It's never going to have the romance associated with the first place you lived free, and it's not going to become your proper "home" either. It's just one (of potentially many) stop gaps between those.

There's also the fact that, at heart, I'm an xbox fanboy. But I feel the same way about the original xbox too.

the ps2 is the only game console I have ever owned, most of my favourite games of all time were games that I first played on it so it is a significant console for me. I still played it regularly until a few years ago.

While the PS2 was debatably most successful consoles of the twenty first century, it seems like everything Sony has done since then has paled in comparison. I doubt they're ever going to see that same kind of success again, and I think they do, too. But, like Robin, the PS2 doesn't hold a very special place in my heart. I've still got my SNES, I still play PC exclusives that are almost as old as I am, but my PS2 games have just been collecting almost as much dust as my Xbox 360 games have. I've never been much of a console gamer, though.

Oh god yes. I think PS2 is the only thing I have nostalgia factor for, even when I had to move out from my childhood home where I spent many years in, I didn't care about it, I never had that "no place like home" feeling at all, same for many other things, except some foods, but possibly only because I like the taste of them and that's it.

However, when I see Resident Evil 4 or Vice City Stories video on YouTube, you know what happens in my pants. moto_whistle.gif

Playstation 2 over NintenDon't every day of the week, babe!

Sony trumped every body with it's original successor.

I got my first PS2 from my friend's uncle, about $100 bucks maybe, I was always looking for a cheap ticket in, all my GTA faves were on PS2, and my widest array of games I bought are/were for PS2

10 years is expected from current machines due to the resources and monies spent developing, so it's also not surprising the golden era seems quaint in many ways

Sega Genesis has about the same feeling and I liked the 3DO as well, so those really were "game changers" historically as far as me, for Rockstar North's Housers, they grew up on Nintendo.

God I miss my PS2, I need to buy another one, since mine bite the dust. I miss playing Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3, and Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 on that thing. Not to mention GT4, which I like better than GT5. (GT5 had to much of a reliance of online features, and I have dial up so I couldn't get all the updates and all of that)

The PS2 had some pretty great exclusive titles, especially since GTAIII was one of the earliest games I remember owning for the console. To this day, I still regard it as a great console, whereas not one of the best I have ever owned in terms of the games I have had most fun on, but in terms of the exclusive titles and whatnot, great console. It deserves recognition for still having games sold in shops to this day...even finding original Xbox titles is near impossible these days.

I'm still after picking another one up at some point when I have enough spare cash.

Prior to PS2 though, no DVD ROM consoles!! HELL YEAH! Another win scored for Sony!

Original Xbox games are in plenty of pawn shops around here, no shortage (in MN)

No DVD consoles? Well, no wonder, because all of today's consoles run CD-ROM's.

Also, there were CD consoles before the PS2. What about the CD-i? Or the Sega Mega Drive, the 3DO, or the damn original PS1?

The PS2 was a god among consoles. I remember my PS2 had a stand, was covered in stickers and ran like a champ. We still have the EyeToy, a 6 way controller port, the double sized memory cards and enough cheat code books to make your head spin. The PS2 was my console, and the Xbox nor the Gamecube ever had the same appeal to me. Especially in racing games, I still have Gran Turismo 3 and 4, and I used to play the sh*t out of them. I even went through 2 or 3 wheels (Madcatz) and 2 wireless controllers trying to get all the licences and endurance races. f*cking love the PS2

The PS2 was my gaming god. I just regret having my parents spend $400 on it. I even bought the stupid DVD remote. I paid them back eventually.

Ditto. If I never got a PS2, I probably wouldn't have discovered GTA as early as I did, and if that happened I would be a completely different person. So different, I'd probably still be watching Cartoon Network (which has gone to hell completely), and maybe even still play Call of Duty.

Yeah so am I, there's a few arround $30 in my local gamestop used, which I might just get, then load up on a few games that I sold, and a new memory card. Hell I might have more fun loading up on old games I miss than playing my PS3 at times.

I've got fond memories of my PS2. Heck I still have it now, it's sitting a foot or two away from me, still plugged into my TV. I have quite a few games for it, and had I not gotten an Xbox 360 I would still be playing it.

I had a fat PS2 for about a year or two, back in 2003 or so. It got the disc read error pretty quickly (no I didn't know how to fix it back then) and so I got one of the slim ones. I've had it for a long time and it's done me well. I love the size of it. Is there any console in history, apart from maybe an OnLive system, that is smaller? Maybe the Wii, although it would be pretty close. It just puts the PS3 to shame size-wise. The only bad thing about my slim now is that it plays games loud as heck, and it always scratches blue disc games (and makes an even louder noise equivalent to a saw cutting wood) when playing them. I have quite a few blue disc games, including the top down GTAs sad.gif.

Is online play still around for the PS2? I remember reading that most servers for games were disabled some time after the PS3 came out. I love online gaming on the Xbox 360 but I've never bothered to connect my PS2 to the internet, don't even know if I have any supported games.

I have idea how many games Ive played on the ps2 since I got my first one in 2000. There are too many classics to list came out on it. Even though I have a ps3 now some of the best gameplay is still on ps2 games. Also modern game have decided to ditch split screen multiplayer which is pretty bullsh*t. Heaps more ps2 games were 2+ players.

My original PS2 broke when I first played GTA III. Dad tripped over the controller cable and the PS2 fell off the shelf while I was playing GTA III. I was stressed because I only just got it and the disc tray was f*cked. I got the disc out though thank god.

The PS2 I have now is the one I got in 2002. I love my PS3, but I really miss the days when you could play 2 split screen with your mates and take it in turns.

I have 3 PS2's before, and all of it, gone.....

First one is the original PS2, it got broken because the machine inside malfunctions

The second PS2 is, well..... sold to my cousin

The third one is the slim one, whenever it reads a disc it creates some kind of circular scratch on the disc that made the PS2 broken when reaading it

i really miss it sad.gif ......

It's almost 10 years since my family bought a Playstation 2. It was a special moment. My father bought a Playstation 2 with 17 games from a guy for just 4000 SEK or something which should be around 650 dollars. This was in the summer of 2002. I might have forgotten the exact prices and circumstances but I'm absolutely sure that we got 17 games. And guess what? GTA III was one of the 17 games and it became my favourite PS2 game very fast. By the way, I was 9 years old at the time, almost 10 so I guess I was pretty young for playing a GTA game and I guess PS2 is a gaming console I grew up with although I played other game consoles like SNES, PS1, NES and Sega Mega Drive in the late 1990s.

Other great PS2 games I remember we got in 2002 were: States of Emergency, WWF Smackdown: Just Bring It!, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Salt Lake 2002, World Rally Championship, Crazy Taxi and some other games.

After that I bought some PS2 games now and then and my favourite PS2 game is GTA San Andreas which I got in 2005. I played this game many times that year and the following two years. After that my favourite PS2 games were the Tony Hawk-games. Although the PS2 was clearly my favourite console at the time I stopped buying any games after 2007 since I bought the PS3 the following year. But it is a little bit suprising to me because I've bought games from many other consoles even though PS3 is my biggest priority. I guess PS2 isn't really that retro yet and some years ago I wanted to give the Gamecube a chance. I didn't got that console until 2006 when the Wii was about the get released.

From what I understand they are still making PS2 games and the production of games was very big until at least 2008-2009. I haven't heard anything abouth a new popular PS2 game for a while but I think it's kind of cool that the console has survived over 10 years. It's a special console. Gamecube, for example, ceased their game production in 2007.

All in all, I own over 60 PS2 games but I haven't played them all. This is only beaten by the NES. I own around 80 NES cartridges.

You are joking, right? That had to be one of the worst, most pointless games that has ever been released on a console. I admit, for the first few days, it was enjoyable at the most, but then when you realise you're just doing the same sh*t over and over and over and over...

Must have gotten my PS2 in 2003 or so... remember it like it was last week.

Came with 2 games, Ratchet & Clank and a WRC game.

I just casually played once in a while, then a friend lent me Vice City. From that point my gaming future was set, I became a GTA junkie.

I'm trying to get hold of a PS2 now, I'm dying to play The Warriors, San Andreas, Scarface and Manhunt 1. turns out PS2's are hard to get hold of these days. Every one say they either used to have one of have a broken one. Actually tempted to buy a brand new one just to play the classic games.

Oh the memories. Years later I got a slim and still have both. But my original PS2 is useless. It doesn't read disks anymore. It started up when San Andreas came out. I squeezed the life out of it by constantly opening it and cleaning it out. It would crap out on the last mission of SA. Finally, I got it working. Now I just play it on PC and Xbox or 360.

Talk about it, I miss mine badly, odds are I'll just get a used thin one, hopefully it works out well, but I don't know if GameStop will take me for a run or not, anyone know if they test those things out before they sale them? I don't wan to get burned to badly.

The proper procedure is for the shop to test them before they even buy them, if someone is to be trading one in, but this isn't always the case, so I'd advise you to just keep your receipt.

I think over here, the average going price for a PS2 these days is around £30-£40, so shall be picking one up when I have some spare cash. Wouldn't mind getting the full GTA collection again and playing through all of them, plus all of the other 100+ games that I used to love.

Still, older than most PS3 players.

Ha! True that.

Slim ones are pretty hard to f*ck up so if you are purchasing a second hand one, rest assured the chance of it not working is incredibly low, just buy it, very small investment be like 40 pounds, and if you hold onto the receipt you can return it.
