Shreddy Krueger
Well obviously this forum will be biased towards GTAV, but I think in terms of straight sales, once a GTA game is released I think the gaming world sort of takes a breather from everything else and the whole industry is focused on this one franchise. Games like COD or Halo (halo being one of my fav games) are popular because of their consistent outputs, but I feel that overall people play those games because they're the "go-to" game(s) for a pretty decent online experience. I never hear anyone talk about the in-depth intertwined single player story in a COD game. In fact most COD players I know don't even play the campaign and head straight for multiplayer. Halo at least carries a canon with it and the mystique of Master Chief, as well as each game tells a new and unique story (to the overall covenant/human war) as best as a war-based FPS can do. But with GTA, you get the pinnacle of gaming. You get experimentation with new gameplay mechanics, new playable characters with completely unique backgrounds and stories that make you actually care about the story. You get humour, action, adventure, realism. It's a driving game, a shooter. It's basically got a bit of every genre wrapped into one, and it's polished and solid as any game made. I think that's why GTA can stand up to any other franchise, because people know they are getting superb quality.

Iroquois
I respect these kinds of threads; but i hate it when someone keeps on mentioning COD or comparing any game to COD. Its much better to compare it to other games of similar genres or to mature games. COD has high sales and will continue to have the highest sales because ~90% of COD players are less than 12 years of age, and lets face it, there is more of them than there is of us. So to answer your question; nope, COD will once again have the highest number of sales for the ~20th time in a row. But us GTA fans know that GTA is the best series(as well as the best individual games) out there; no point in comparing. Sorry if there was a hint of anger in my post; its just whenever someone mentions COD i just want to Long live GTA
Chickenwing
I never really understood gamers' reactions when two good games release the same date. Battlefield 3 and MW3 for example, both came out around the same time period. From that point, 90% of the fans took the side of one game. Why not, you know.... just buy both?? I sure did. I play them about the same amount. Are people really that poor that they can't save up for 2 PS3 games?? I bought MW3 & Battlefield 3.... MW3 convinced me to never buy another COD game again as it was pure Copied & Pasted muck from older games BF3 was on par with Uncharted 3 for GOTY

However,The only way a GTA could get "overshadowed" by another Franchise is if there's a similar game from a fantastic developer with the size, fun and realism of GTA and would proovethat it is better in many aspects, then there would be serious competition if they would release in the same month. The other game would probably be seen as GTA rip-off from many people but the fact that it's the better game would get peoples attention. But this will probably never happen. Sunrise Driver
It depends on how much hype R* build prior to release even if R* don´t show nothing until october 8 and this day they say that gta V release date is october 9, even if this happens gta V will have the biggest sales of this year and probably the biggest sales of the history much more than other game in history What he said. GTA V will pawn em all. All these boring shooters.
MrcTOtheJ
Cod will have highest sales.Gta is not the biggest franchise of all time Well people get a New CoD game every year, where as people get a new GTA, what every few years (the exception being VC which was developed in like 6 months, and released about a year if not less later than III, and then SA two years after that I believe) so I'm sure it will do just fine. Dosen't matter to me, I know what I'd be buying, I can care less what others will buy, but I'm sure GTAV will bring enough girth so to speak to the table to counter everything, It's been in the big leagues longer than most of those games have been around. (There are a few excpetions Halo's been arround about the same time as the GTA franchise, just 3 or 4 years later)

GTFO!! Sure Call of Duty might have sold more that GTA IV and broke its record, but we have to remember that back when GTA IV was released(2008) Things were a bit different. Call of Duty has been coming out every year and with todays market, sells alot more. There are three times more people with consoles nowadays which means more consumers. Im very curious to see how GTA V does with todays market. To be honest, there is a very high chance that GTA V will set new Sales Records and maybe become the best selling game of all time! I mean Cod is Cod, BF is BF, but when it comes to GTA, EVERYONE IS IN!
ll rdny ll
Well, I've been waiting for GTA V since about July last year. But I've been waiting for Halo 4 since before Reach was announced. If V gets a release date for November 6th, I'm going to have to think long and hard about which game to get first. (though I'll probably end up choosing GTA V) There are a lot of people out there who see GTA as 'just another TPS.' I think GTA V could suffer if released too close to the 'more popular' First person shooters. Edited April 27, 2012 by rodneythesavior

EDDS
The only games GTA V would have to contend with would be COD and Halo, less so Halo as that's an exclusive. I do think if they released all three on the same day it could be close in terms of sales although it's been so long since the last game and GTA has such a huge fan base that they could edge ahead. It seems like GTA still sells well long after the release which neither COD or Halo do, compared to GTA anyway so GTA will undoubtably sell more in the long run, but day/week 1 sales could be close. Triple Vacuum Seal
Cod will have highest sales.Gta is not the biggest franchise of all time you don't have to be the biggest series of all time to out sell COD. GTA4 outsold the COD that came out right before it. COD is growing redundant even amongst its own fanbase, while GTA is still growing. GTA fanboys are biased, but they just happen to be right with this IMO. "shut up, sit down, relax"
Algonquin Assassin
Lets not forget aswell GTA games are typically sold on consoles first and PC later on. It would be pretty impressive if GTA V broke sales records just on 360 and PS3 before even factoring in the PC sales. A lot of these other games like COD are multi platform releases straight off the bat. COD: Whatever they're up to now will be the only game to take it to GTA V IMO, but as I said it's a multiple platform release. Nothing in the sandbox genre will come close to triumphing GTA V in terms of sales.

DarrinPA
I remember being a kid and only having enough cash for 1 game, it didn't matter if they were different genres, cash is cash and it was hard to come by. If any of the other larger games comes out on the same day I could easily see kids choosing to purchase one or the other, and honestly GTA V isn't always going to win in everybody's minds and wallets.
