Slamman
Outside of the typical expounding on lack of GTA info, which you can't take very far, lets hypothesis about what changes can be made to our beloved Grand Theft Auto without it becoming another game, can you cite what is the criteria and where the boundaries might lie? Thanks for taking part! -B

Durden
Good question. First, we must identify what makes a GTA a GTA. -Interactive environment and minigames -Authentic physics -Combat (e.g. car chases, shootouts, etc.) -Ability to go anywhere, anytime -Crude humour & parodies -Stealable (if that's a word) vehicles In a nutshell, GTA is made up of free-roam, combat, and vehicles. As for what can be added while keeping the GTA formula, anything a criminal would do such as deal drugs, customize weapons, and collect exotic cars to name a few. SmC12
- A goal driven and diverse story - the goal being wealth. - An interactive AI environment - Living, breathing city. - A variety of vehicles - Auto - Adult humour - An in game culture, which is the stereotyping and parody of america - The ability to use weapons and combat - Playing from the perspective of a criminal sucked into the city's crime underworld in a journey to the top. These are the basic foundations of a GTA game. EDIT: Beaten to it.
grope_4_that_date
Grand Theft Auto revolves around violence, crime, guns, vehicles and open-world gameplay. • GTA isn't GTA when you play as a cop, unless he's crooked. • GTA isn't GTA when you play prior to the year 1950. • GTA isn't GTA when it's not an open world game. nocunoct
It wouldn't be a GTA if: -No free roaming -Missions became levels -There were levels of intensity (easy, medium, hard) -FPS is the only camera available -Can't kill everyone you want to -You can't create any kind of havoc in the city you're in And most importantly... -You can't freely steal cars

JoyDivision
i'm willing to go further and say it's an abstract feeling you get from it. each gta has a unique feeling to each other and no other game has a feeling like the gta series. i remember when i first played gta III, it was a mix of in-game freedom, the sights and sounds, the attention to detail, the wealth of history and things. the fact that no matter what i could not get bored of it. Sandreas
Back when Rockstar released San Andreas back in 04 it was huge, but now we all have to forget a bit about the past look unto the New San Andreas leaving our beloved San Fierro and Las Venturas.... I kinda got off topic but anyway GTA is GTA!!!!!
Algonquin Assassin
When it is not Rockstar, it's not GTA anymore. True. if another developer made GTA they would turn into a sh*tty game that releases every year to make profit (like COD) I wouldn't really say it would be sh*t. I mean if R* sold the rights to another developer they would have to have some trust in them, but it wouldn't be the same I must admit.
Triple Vacuum Seal
When real car brand names begin to be used, it no longer GTA. *When there is no Infernus or Banshee, it isn't a GTA. "shut up, sit down, relax"
Racecarlock
When you add in stuff like fuel and hunger and prison and having to pick the lock of and hotwire every car you come across for five minutes before you can actually drive it. Then it's a simulator or mafia II, and GTA is neither. It's a crime game that lets me get away with rampaging in tanks without me having to spend a half hour in prison or take food breaks or fuel breaks or making me pick the lock and hotwire it. That's GTA. If you take that away, you're left with an awkward combination of the sims 3 and mafia II.
Slamman
I wouldn't knit pick like that, I think for using the DS for example, some new methods of interactive control needed to be employed

neo92boi
Put it like this, if you dont feel completley immersed after your second step on the soil of the map unto which the game is set its not GTA. If it feels anything like its predecesor except mechanics its not GTA. More importantly if its anything short of the R* quality of work its not GTA. ....Its saints Row
Stryfaar
Most of you might hate me for this but honestly, GTA hasn't been GTA since IV. I miss the old 'feeling' the previous GTAs have. IV is too realistic, while I'm too nostalgic. So for me, IV wasn't really 'that' impressive. I hope V brings the good ol' feeling where realism and fun is balanced. Jabalous
Everyone has his own criteria. You may find someone considering GTA IV not a real GTA game because it doesn't have GTA SA's list of features. Also, you find some players making a sarcastic comment by claiming that Red Dead Redemption is Grand Theft Horses. The most reasonable criteria, which I believe close to the way Rockstar Games thinks, is that a GTA game isn't really GTA, if: - It's not set in an open world. - It doesn't have automobiles. - You play in the law side. - It doesn't have sarcastic social comments. - It's not set in a re-created and re-imagined setting. IV is too realistic, while I'm too nostalgic. So for me, IV wasn't really 'that' impressive. I hope V brings the good ol' feeling where realism and fun is balanced. THIS GTA IV honestly IMO was the worst home console based GTA aside from the originals when it came to the true soul of a GTA title. When I played IV I felt like i was playing a higher polished III without the epic feeling of being in a new mind frame when it comes to video games because III, VC, and SA did it already .Sure IV was brutal, and highly realistic but there was no comedy, no sense of becoming one with the times and city like VC, and SA did, It felt like as you progressed you felt even more like a visitor than a part of the city, the only time I felt like that was in TLAD, not even TBOGT. Whilst in SA and VC I felt Like I was there and I completely took over and Vice City and San Andreas was not only my home but my playground. I literally felt like I was back in the 80's clubbing, dishing coke, and building an empire like scarface. In SA I felt like I was really becoming an OG out of Compton through a shady deal with the police and making connections across a state in the 90's beeper jerri curl and all. GTA IV's liberty City feels like a place where the party was over and I was trying to make the best of it that I could. (GTA III Era > GTA IV) by a large margin hopefully V will bring us back to the good ol days. I will give R* the benefit of doubt saying it was there first real game on this gen of consoles and they did fairly well just not excellent, just like GTA III. The only reason wy GTA III was so good was because there was nothing like it before it which is why GTA IV failed a little. After what I've seen with the advancement from GTA IV---Red Dead---LA Noire---and Max Payne 3. GTA V will and must be a beast of a game because if not GTA is kinda over. . . Slamman
Saying GTA hasn't been GTA since "4" is not making much sense to me, as DLC is another facet of the same game. The main question this posted thread centers on is how to evolve GTA without it losing it's status as GTA, the original, to perhaps keep it fresh without any reboot, which could be a bad idea. They claim Saints Row 3 is a reboot, so that would not bode well for GTA, if it came to that somewhere down the line. But we always think about what to keep in GTA games, and what doesn't work, along those lines

mr quick
These are all suggestions from this forum, to which I say: GO OUT OF YOUR F*CKING CAVE IF YOU WANT REALISM! -seatbelts -Speeding tickets -1 star wanted for speeding or going out of lane -breaking legs, arms, ribs etc -unpassable mountains as a border (if there are planes and helicopters which there will be, this is so f*cking retarded it's out of this world)-irrelevant -inability to retry failed missions -going to jail and having to see thru the punishment -Have kids -
