Usually we just change the title to reflect the season. Or at least, that's what I think we should do. Hell, we should probably just take the dates away and just name it "The Baseball topic".

Not sure who to follow this season, my loyalty usually rests with what my favourite colour is at the start of the season. Think I might go with Baltimore because I've just recently watched all five seasons of The Wire in a seven day binge.

 

Debating whether to get live "out of market" (?) games on my xbox from MLB TV. We can only get baseball by subscribing to ESPN over here in the UK.

Yeah I have a feeling the Pujols contract is going to become a huge lag on the Angels especially since they are going to want to lock up Trout for the long term. I've heard it said he may ask for 10Y/$300M but that's just a rumor. And it will obviously be harder to lock him up to a deal like that with pujols contract being the big white elephant in the room.

 

If Miguel Cabreara can continue to produce even 75% of what he is doing now for 5-8 more years he will go down as one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game and possible first ballot hall of famer. How many years does he have left on his deal? I think this is his 10th year in the league already... But he is only 30 YO. So if he can get 5 more years of production atleast 75% of his current output and then 50-60% in his last 5 years he will retire at 40 and god knows what his numbers will look like.

If his poor stats thus far continue and he continues to make up excuses, that will have to be viewed as one of the worst contracts in baseball, as well. Currently, the combination of Pujols and Hamilton are hitting .235 with 16 home runs, 48 RBI, an OPS of .715 and 85 strikeouts to 36 walks. You get all that for only $33 million this season! Look at their contracts, though. Those numbers cannot continue for the sake of that team's payroll. By the fifth and final year of Hamilton's contract, he will be 36, Pujols will be 37 and they will combine for $58 million in payroll. Their contracts are so heavily back-loaded it will make it difficult for the Angels to spread money around to other players like Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo.

Yes it's ridiculous that they would give two players such massive deals. Unless their ownership has money pouring through their nostrils. They are both great players but its hard for me to think they are worth it especially because they are both getting up there in age especially Pujols.

Currently the LA Angels and the LA Dodgers have a combined payroll of $358,468,159 and their combined record is 44-56. If you average out their payroll you get $179,234,080 which would be good for the third highest payroll behind the Yankees and the Dodgers. All that money and, so far, neither team is higher than third place in their respective division, the Dodgers are actually in last place in the NL West. THE NL WEST. Also, rumors are suggesting that Don Mattingly will be fired soon. I don't blame them for doing so at all. The Dodgers have not been in the playoffs with Mattingly as manager and have not been since 2009, Joe Torre's second to last year as manager. The Angels owner, Arte Moreno, has said that's there's zero chance that Mike Scioscia will be fired during the season. The Angels have also not been to the playoffs since 2009.

 

I'm a born and raised New York Yankees fan, but I've never seen two teams with more talent and payroll doing so poorly. It's incredible.

I guess it just goes to show that big money players don't necessarily buy wins. It's more about getting the correct pieces together and players that compliment each other well. How do you suppose the Rays spent $150 million less than the Yankees and still won the Division 2 out of 3 years and made it into the playoffs 3 out of 4? My Twins also had some pretty good years in the 2000s while still spending very little and playing in the lowest revenue generating stadium in the league. And now they are spending much more than they were before and have a great ballpark. Yet we suck ass but hey atleast we are doing better than those damn white sox.

He's never said a bad word about the Cardinals, even had the Angels wear Stan Musial memorial patches for batting practice during that series. But you still hate him because he left you. Half the posts from you in this thread for the past year and a half is about him.

What a comeback for the Angels tonight. Their pitching is just horrible. I don't trust anyone who is currently in the starting rotation, with the exception of Weaver. I really wish they could have pulled in Greinke in the off-season. Hamilton, although the hero of the night, is no substitute for a reliable starting pitcher.
