HOW'S ANNIE?

I know it's been discussed as to whether or not it is in fact in the GTA IV. But I want to see whether or not people are in support of the two games being in the same era/universe.

I was kind of suprised that they jumped to the fifth era already, I was kind of expecting GTA IV: San Andreas/Vice City/What have you. Given R*'s take on era's and such, we'll hear about Nikolai and John and Louise, and other things, but nothing more.

I think an all new era would be really cool. This game might be on a much bigger scale than IV...

This.

The fact that they've jumped straight to "V" without any additions, suggests to me that we're moving on. Well, I hope so, because if not I will feel conned.

It's definitley in the IV era. The model of the cars, company logos, plus it's in the HD era. If it were to be in another era, it'll have to be in a next-gen console.

I think they added the "V" because they wanted to hide the location and they've already made enough locations to make it a not-secret if you put the location in the title.

No, I don't want it to be in the same era. If its in the same era that usually means characters coming back and that would make it seem to me that R* are making GTA V a cash cow, just for the money!

This whole era/universe thing Rockstar mentioned in my opinion is just an easy excuse as to why characters from previous titles are not returning and to quickly explain why Liberty City is different than the Liberty City in IV, I don't think they meant for it to be taken so serious.

The only condition a new era could spawn is on a new console. Therefore, it is impossible for GTAV to take place during any other era than the HD era.

It is called "GTA: V" for marketing purpose's only.

Would you rather buy a game that's called "GTA: V" or "GTA: IV Los Santos"?

In this case, the name has absolutely nothing to do with the ERA. icon14.gif

This. I'd actually be disappointed if they've moved on already. I felt that the stories told in IV still didn't end in Liberty City. I'd like to see the fate of Roman, whether he survived.

EDIT: OOPS FORGOT THE SPOILER.

Claude Speed was in San Andreas for a little bit,

Maybe Brucie or Mori Kibbutz will be hosting the Triathlons in GTAV

I'm pretty sure it'll be minor roles.

It will be in the HD era, same as IV. It's marketing, simple as that.

Which sounds better ?

GTA IV: Los Santos

or

GTA V

#2, of course. It feels way more appealing to the casual gamers and the ones who never played a GTA before. GTA IV: Los Santos would sounds like it's a DLC, just like GTA IV: EFLC

It will be, in the sense of the time frame, not the characters per se, there was some official UNOFFICIAL word that a reference to a past character WILL show up in GTA V, BUT, the most important notice we got was that they weren't in the script. Keep this in mind, it will play into what we find later in GTA V's details

Why are people so fixed on the game being titled, GTA IV: Los Santos if it hadn't been GTA V? Vice City wasn't GTA III: Vice City, it was GTA Vice City, and San Andreas wasn't GTA III: San Andreas, it was GTA San Andreas. Wouldn't it be more logical thinking/reasoning on some people's part, to go along with how R* has named their previous titles without Roman Numerals, and call it simply GTA Los Santos, not GTA IV: Los Santos?

Anyway, regardless, maybe there's obviously more to GTA V than what little they've shown us, that GTA V deserves the "V" title, and not GTA Los Santos.

Erm... I'd rather have GTA IV: Los Santos if it's a continuation of GTA IV.

GTA III (+VC & San An) followed a timeline and were a single universe. I expect... no... I DEMAND a new universe when there is a new roman numeral.

Again, GTA IV: Los Santos is much better if the story is continuing from IV.

The story of GTA IV is the story of GTA IV... just in the same way that the story of GTA III was the story of GTA III (Liberty, VC, San An).

Not on the box art, but they were all part of the same story - if you check your data files, VC & San An all have "gta3.img" files - they are essentially "GTA III: Vice City" and "GTA III: San Andreas."

It isn't really a question of what we want. We are already more or less certain that GTA:V is going to be in the same era/universe as IV.

One of the key pieces of evidence was the '2D/3D/HD universe' answer that Rockstar posted in a Q&A on their Newswire. And specifically the timing of said answer. That explanation was posted on 15th December 2011; which is after the GTA:V announcement and trailer. Which means that 2D/3D/HD division of universes almost certainly applies to GTA:V, which would place it in the HD era along with GTA:IV.

Of course, it remains to be seen what that will mean in terms of characters reprised, events referenced and influences on GTA:V's story.

I don't understand why people are fixated on the "GTA IV: Los Santos" thing...

Was Vice City or San an Called GTA III:Vice City and GTA III:San Andreas? NO.

they could change the name last minute to GTA Los Santos. or keep it GTA V

it's all marketing guys.

Besides, the easiest way to say it's not All of San An is in the title. R* already has (and still sells) a GTA San Andreas, they can't call GTA V "San Andreas" or "San Andreas 2" it would give too much at this point in time.

They also can't call it GTA Los Santos because they have stated that it will include surrounding country side (which may, or may not encompass the entire San Andreas state.)

Given where the game is being based, GTA V is the best name they can (currently) give the game, it's the most clean, and considering it's a remake of an old city, it makes sense to make it a numerical name.

Era... universe... storyline...

Those words get confused on here.

I have no doubt it'll be "HD Era" but I'm using "Era" refering to the storylines (look at the homepage of these forums - "I/II Era" "III Era" "IV Era").

In other words, "IV Era" should be different to "V Era" IMO. If it follows on from IV then R* really have messed up.

I REALLY hope that the GTA V is a new "era". I'm so over GTA IV, with the two DLCs they've explored as much of the IV story as possible.

Nobody goes around calling them GTA III: Vice City/San Andreas though, they're officially just GTA Vice City/San Andreas. Whether it's on the box or not, nobody's going to call it GTA IV: Los Santos, it doesn't sound right. GTA Los Santos however, does sound better.

But like I said, obviously there's something more to GTA V that we don't know about yet (we really don't know sh*t right now anyway, it's all just speculation,) that R* decided it deserved a Roman Numeral, and not something like GTA Los Santos.

I know that no one *literally* calls them that... but they *are* part of the III series and there is no change in roman numeral.

Put in its simplest terms:

GTA I

|

GTA London 1969

|

GTA London 1961

GTA II

GTA III

|

Vice City

|

San Andreas

|

Liberty City Stories

|

Vice City Stories

GTA IV

|

The Lost and the Damned

|

The Ballad of Gay Tony

|

Chinatown Wars

GTA V

Each bold is its own universe and to start "linking roman numerals" (to coin a phrase) would be a strange thing to do.

When VC & San An were in development, R* probably never imagined making a 5th game a decade later, so probably felt no need to give them the "III" title as they would never re-visit them.

Titles are simple - new roman numeral = new universe = new characters and stories. If V turns out to be a continuation of IV then someone needs sacking.

This this topic is a little silly. I don't really think much has changed in the world between 2008 and 2012. Of course it will be in a similar time frame as GTA IV. GTA V will be set from the exact era that the real game was created in, which is 2011/2012.

It's not about time...

Each GTA "universe" is an alternate reality - time / timelines don't mean anything, unless it's a linear story (such as the III Era games).

I think they got pushed into the "V" name. Everybody had been calling the next title "V" for so long even before it was revealed it even existed. WOuld probably seem like less of a game if it had GTAIV in the title considering the last two parts where DLC's.

As said, it's in the "HD" canon and I expect it to somewhat follow suit with GTAIV only different people, different coast... so if it does or doesn't it would be hard to tell really. The only proof either way would be if a reoccurring character gets put into it or R* officially says it's a different universe. If memory serves me the official statement is this is also the "HD" era as opposed to the "3D" era of previous consoles or "2D" from before that.

I really would have hoped they kill the IVth era, but it looks like theyre not going to do that. V is just the 'west coast' rendition of the HD era. They just named it V because that sounds bigger.

If V is the same universe as IV, they will probably make it feel like part of the same world, where the same rules apply. Which means most of the annoyances of IV will stay. I would have hoped for a fresh start.
