Lithium
I found an interesting link that states that the worlds stockpile of helium will be gone within the next 10 to 25 years depending on the demand for it. Made for a good light read. A Helium Shortage? Thoughts?
Jay
I read on Cracked last year that for some reason the US, at the time being in control of the largest helium resource in the world, actually legislated that it all be sold by a particular date. With a price ceiling implemented. If market forces were to dictate price, it would cost 100 dollars or more to fill a single balloon. Ridix. Creed Bratton
So what? Space is full of helium. If we don't find a way to collect some helium from space in the next 25 years we may as well nuke ourselves because we failed according to most science fiction movies. I've heard about an idea for harvesting helium 3 on the Moon. Technology is advancing very fast. Who knows what we'll be able to do in 25 years. Ryan
If we do run out of Helium, we still have plenty of Hydrogen, although the downside is that Hydrogen is highly flammable. How are the world stockpiles of Lithium doing?

agent17
Hydrogen will solve everything, and make balloons even more entertaining. Still, what will happen to airships once helium runs out? Realistically they can't operate on hydrogen safely.

Jay
idk guys, for a post-apocalyptic civilisation with scarce oil resources, they sure do drive around wasting petrol quite a lot.
agent17
So why don't they just use Hydrogen on balloons? Sure it's a safety hazard, but it's better than the alternative. Besides, I'm sure balloons can made out of a more 'fire-proof' material.
Rhoda
I'd have liked to hear this on the news, but read in a high, funny, squeaky voice. So why don't they just use Hydrogen on balloons? I have visions of children holding onto this.

Hardee har har Rob. hahahaha When the set-up's that easy, I can't be blamed for knocking them out of the park. Besides, I knew this'd just devolve into a bunch of jokes about explosive balloons. GTA_stu
I'd love to see a kid holding onto a hydrogen balloon get his arm blown off, just so I could say "Oh the humanity!". Actually, and this is kind of weird, but I reckon a hydrogen balloon could be used by a terrorist. Some guy dresses up as a clown and has about 100 balloons filled with hydrogen, then he wades his way into a crowd and BOOM! Al Qaeda should definitely headhunt me, I'd make a great terrorist. I don't think hydrogen is anywhere near as useful as an explosive as, say, TATP. Whilst it's a fantastically entertaining idea, it's usefulness as a weapon would be limited unless you could get your target to quite literally sit on the hydrogen balloons whilst you detonated them.
