12 y/o interrogated for facebook password

Her school interrogated her for her facebook and email account passwords because she posted a comment on facebook saying she hated an adult hall monitor that she felt was picking on her, somehow the principal found out and gave her detention and forced her to apologize.

That was just the beginning not long after she was in trouble for another facebook post which contained a swear word, and i quote She was in trouble again shortly thereafter for another Facebook post, which asked who turned her in, using an expletive for effect. She was given a school suspension and missed a class ski trip, end quote.

And in a third incident she was called in again because the parent or parents of a kid going to the same school complained that the girl known only as R.S had a conversation about sex on facebook.

This whole thing is ridiculous, first it's not entirely clear if the girl did use a swear word on facebook, i don't think she did someone else did and framed her for it, secondly why did the other kid's parent or parents complain to the school about a conversation about sex on facebook, it had nothing to do with the school, the other parent should have talked to the girl's mother instead of complaining to the school.

The lines between real life and Facebook have been blurred for a long time now, and I don't believe the school should have taken the measures they did. Granted, they could do what they pleased but I doubt she'll stop moaning about institutions on social network sites. I think a better solution would be a letter sent home to parents pointing out the risks of discussing sex and personal information on Facebook. Of course it isn't against any kind of rules or terms/conditions per se, but I can see parents having more of an idea than a school body do, even if they're completely computer illiterate.

Bitch went too far, I'd have waterboarded her ass and sent her potty mouth to Guantanamo.

And do you think the school looked into whether or not the hall monitor was in fact 'picking on her'? I doubt it.

She got in trouble in school, for swearing outside of school? Makes sense.

Again, what does this have to do with the school? If they want to talk about sex on Facebook, that's their prerogative. I don't know why they're doing it in the first place, but as long as it's no during school, I see no problem with it.

As for 'interrogating' her, the school really should have gotten her parents permission before they questioned her, if even at all. They should have just consulted her parents in the first place, if they had such a problem with it, instead of taking it into their own hands, especially since it occurred outside of the school.

The school staff was completely out of line. They hold no authority over what she does outside of school grounds, and last I checked, social networks are not physically within school grounds.

Yet another example of why you should understand and control your privacy settings on Facebook. Not that any of this is right, but it could have been avoided. Plus if you know who can see what you post you can post much more interesting things.

Adults are always right and children are always suspect.

Power gets power.

If a cop stops you on the street fall to your knees and beg forgiveness.

Secret rooms (FB) should be secret otherwise why have 'Friends'.

If there was fault on the part of the child then the authorities should take them to court, not badger.

Called in a Deputy? Didn't call the kids parent/guardian?

What law did she break or was the Deputy the Hall Monitors brother?

So basically they suspended her for voicing an opinion and for practicing her freedom of speech? That's quality education right there. Says a lot about that school as well.

Students lose their freedoms when they enter school property. Plus they'd be disciplined if they mouthed off to the teachers face, it's the same thing except it was online. I support the staff. Teach these children some respect.

reminds me of sth that happened to me, last year i did ICT in college, we had a facebook group to help eachother with tasks and lessons etc, but ofcourse there was quite some posting of funny ("funny") pictures too...I posted this picture when I was out of said college already, and somebody from the group i was in went to the head of the college and told them about that picture, they threatened me with a lawsuit and i had to remove the post, 2 persons who liked said post got a warning...

the facebook group wasn't secret, but it was hidden from people who weren't in it...

Found this bit of discussion regarding Schools vs. Facebook...

As long as Authority has the power it will stifle any critics, And I expect the Courts to not want to risk upsetting the cart.

My school does sh*t like this pretty often. I know a few people who have been suspended for saying sh*t on FB. My school also does some other weird sh*t to make sure we feel their omniscience, but... Anything to cover their ass I guess.

If my School/College asked for my facebook details I'd tell them to f*ck off and walk out.

So would I, and then I'd go outside, climb a mountain, kill that cop that's been picking on me, and I'd go shoot up the secret hideout of Al Qaeda.

Anyways, this is wrong for the school to be doing. Last year at my school it was rumored that the IT guy was reading the kid's Facebook posts and calling them in for talking about each other/the school in an unfavorable manner. I don't think they knew that they could hide their posts.

Parents shouldn't go to the schools about these things either. Neither your daughter, or her friend's businesses are in the school's hands. It's the parent's responsibility to punish their kids for this.

I'm glad I went to school before social networking.

I only ever got suspended for real things, like ditching school and clowning around.

I see this as an invasion of civil rights, and the school way over stepping their bounds.

School and home are two separate things. I'm pretty sure schools don't supply their students with access to facebook during school hours, so they have absolutely no right to complain about anything a student does on facebook. At the most they should contact the local authorities if they uncover a terroristic threats or other illegal activities on one of their student's facebook pages. If they feel their student might be doing something morally or ethically wrong - at most they should just alert the parents - and I even highly question whether they should do that. I swear, if I was 12 and the school called my mother and said "Little Trip called Joey a poo poo head at the mall over the weekend" my mother would have freaked the f*ck out on them.

At 12 years old you start becoming the person you will be. To repress the growth of a human(12 yrs old) almost seems the opposite of education. If this girl wants to speak her mind in non threatening ways she best be allowed. If her folks want to try and mold her at this age it is their responsibility - the school is only there for her to learn math and sh*t like that.

This.

Honestly if I had a child who had gotten into trouble for something said on facebook id first ask:

Was he/she in school when this.was.written?

If not were there any threats made?

If not what the f*ck does it have to do with you or your school?

They cannot stifle freedom of speech in this way. If everyone who said an.ill word against someone else on fb got in trouble for it, everyones profile pics would be mugshots. I'm kind of pissed that he parents didn't explode because of this. They have no right to grill a child on their log in info because of some harmless accusation. The hall monitor or whatever probably was picking on her, did they interrogate him/her? This world is so idiotic

Pathetic. Even more insight on how hostile and flawed some school systems are in America. But yeah, the school took great offense to what the 12 year old girl said. Sad, really. If I was in her position I'd go Rambo on this school board. The incident happened outside of school, where freedom of speech is much more limited than on school property where there are certain limits (use of vulgar profanity etc..) and rules. Terrible case. I hope the school gets even more recognized for this. f*cking hostiles.

What is this? Stalin-era communism? People shouldn't be antagonized for expressing their freedom of speech. If you want to invade someones privacy, then the bill of rights should be shoved up your ass. Maybe Facebook shouldn't have been accessible in that school in the first place. Personally if that was me I would light the bastards on fire for acting with such disgusting violations.
