Cost of living in Canada?

How do you intend to get the proper visas and work permits and so on? You can't just move to Canada like that, or any country outside the EU for that matter. You need the proper papers to even be allowed to live in that country.

Let us be the ones to worry about that. It's all about research first.

Mike Tequeli

I emigrated from Canada 7 years ago.

Love living in the UK and I'm staying.

People can't understand it, they think Canada is some kinda paradise.

Sure I miss it sometimes, family and all.

It depends what you want but I find the quality of life better here in the UK.  More holidays, more things going on and almost everything is cheaper except for petrol.  Everybody always compares the price of petrol/gasoline to the cost of living but it's a one track mentality.  Also London is completely apart from the rest of the country in terms of cost and that's the only thing most tourists see.

When I think of Ontario, I think of freezing rain winters and mosquito humid summers.

Or you can sell your soul and get a job in Alberta.  Enjoy all the rig pigs who drive like complete arseholes in their big-ass pick up trucks.

Move to Vancouver for all the beautiful scenery and things you can do except you'll be a slave to the cost of living and will never get ahead.

Maritimes are beautiful and laid back but like was mentioned earlier, where are you going to work?  There's no factories, no industry, no commercial sector, no trees or fish left ... but hey.. it's cheap there and about as close to ireland as it gets in Canada.

Forget Quebec unless you speak french.

Sorry to say but Saskatchewan and Manitoba will bore the sh*t out of you if you're used to living on a beautiful island with an amazing coastline such as Ireland.

Not trying to diss Canada, I'm just saying... it's not *all that*..

And you can't walk to your local pub or store.. you have to drive everywhere... you might need to drive for 8 hours or more to get to the next major city.

Cars are so expensive there, and insurance can vary .. plus nobody gives a rats ass about full service histories and there are no MOT's .. except in Nova Scotia and .. I dunno maybe in Ontario..  with all the salty roads and no inspections...  the cars are knackered...  half of them are american econoboxes that are built to self destruct when the warranty runs out.  trust me an american ford focus is a *completely* different car.

Cost of petrol isn't so cheap like the states, and most of the cars there get 20 mpg.  Diesels models are very rare, mostly big trucks and VW's.

Alcohol is a total rip off.  A night out with drinks, obligatory 15% tips (basically it's expected... but you get a nice fake smile with your service fwiw) and then a nice expensive taxi ride back to suburbia ...  well... most people just stay home, smoke weed and play videogames.

Of course I realize I'm painting an entire country with a few strokes of the ol' brush and probably somebodys gonna come on here and say "no way, i can walk to my local pub" blah blah but whatever that's my view.

You can't just make broad sweeping generalizations about every part of the country, although I suppose these topics turn into that anyway. I mean come on, no trees in Atlantic Canada? Are you sure you've even been to Atlantic Canada?

You may be grasping at straws if your main complaint about Alberta is that getting a job there is the same as selling your soul and that there are too many trucks. It's a beautiful place and the opportunities aren't as bad as they are in the rest of the country, the taxes are lower and the drinks are generally cheaper IIRC. Food will be cheaper than it is where you are and gas will definitely be cheaper.

All that research will be for nothing if it turns out that you can't even get the proper visa and workpermit to legally live and work in that country, which is pretty likely.

Moved to Canada in '04, left in '08 back to my homeland... as far as I remember it isn't as expensive. If you get the proper paperwork you get health care and sh*t. I guess compared to the US it IS kinda expensive, but I don't think it is much of a problem if you can find a stable source of income before you move there. I suggest saving up for the moving and etc. and if you want to stay in a more "Americanized" place, Toronto is where it's at. The government itself brings in hundreds of thousands of immigrants each year, so usually they have quite a bit in financial aid available.

Triple Penetration

Why not move to somewhere closer, like Norway or even England? I know, England isn't perfect at the moment, but it's better than Ireland, and Norway is way better than Canada in economical and living reasons.

P.S. To that guy who said about construction in Canada - Does Canada have a lot of houses and buildings built? And do you need those Construction ID cards that show that you know the rules of construction? And also, what kind of buildings? American Cardboard POSs, Wooden Log ones or good brick ones?

P.P.S. I know 2 different families in Ireland, one is pretty trashy, living on benefits and drinking alchocol all time (but they are allowed to do so, they have lived in Ireland for 12 years), and other one moved recently, but they got jobs, not good jobs, but they still get paid more than let's say, in Poland.

P.P.S. I'm not a native English boy, but hell, petrol is way worse than diesel, I know it's cheaper, but it is less economical, my father drives an E34 525TDS and that is better than E39 520i in fuel saving. ph34r.gif

I lived in Halifax for a time. Of course there's trees in the maritimes, loads of beautiful trees that look absolutely breathtaking for a week or two in October when they all turn red. I just meant that the logging industry is pretty down and out, or at least it was the last time I checked.

Alberta's great, you're right. I mean, it's -the place to be- if you want to put away some dosh for retirement. But meanwhile your life slips past you and you got the golden suncor handcuffs.

Don't get me wrong, I have loads of friends in Calgary and they are quite happy. But hey, if you like watching someone ride a tortured bull with his nuts tied and clubbing at holes like cowboys then have at 'er. To each his own.

I can't speak for Ireland, but food prices in the UK, strangely enough, are cheaper then I ever remember them being in Canada. A box of cereal, for example can be had sometimes for the equivalent of a buck fifty. Try finding that at your local Superstore.

Again, I don't mean to diss my home on native's land but I'm trying to put a different perspective on the topic.

Oh yeah, and the speed limits are artificially low across the whole country because they like to make money giving tickets out like candy on halloween. Most of the cops are dicks too, compared to the uk. I know, another generalization but seriously the cops are brutal.

Things I miss about Canada:

- better selection of organic / vegetarian foods ( at least on the west coast... I'm not veg but I should be.. )

- crown royal and some of the west coast microbrewery beers

- the fam, and a few friends

- proper bush camping / bush parties...

- the scenery in bc - the best place on earth... dozingoff.gif

Ok, yeah it's nice but wtf? How can they even say that. Fact is most of the people in Canada haven't hardly gone anywhere else because they only get two measly weeks off a year.

Ok my rants almost up, but I just wanted to say that they friends of mine who are doing really well for themselves are all in the building/construction/development business and most of them are self-employed/business owners.

Especially out west, with all the people moving there, it's the thing to do..

So that's what you should do, move there and then build houses for the other people that are moving there. It's like a pyramid scheme.

You know what, f*ck it dude.. just go for it. Seriously what have you got to lose? You can always go back to Ireland and for sure it will be fun, add character and sh*t you might even enjoy eating poutine and crispy bacon drenched in maple syrup.. or going sledding with the guys or whatever, and coming from one of my irish mates who moved to l.a. .. the dudes accent had them birds frothing at the gash. so yeah, don't let me stop yah.

Thing you gotta do first, right.. is to get a company.. any company, to sponsor you .. to say like they need you and they can't find anyone in canada willing to do the job. that's how you get in, because you probably ain't gonna be able to claim asylum or whatever..

either way, good luck, all the best and happy st paddys.

The comment someone said about it taking 8 hours to drive from one major city/town to another is pretty true. I remember going from Winnipeg to Vancouver on a road trip last summer and seeing literally nothing the whole way there. It was like a 22 hour drive and I think I saw literally less than 10 populated areas the whole there other than Regina, the city we stayed in.

I want to live in a city. I don't really care about what goes on the outside lol.gif

I just found out that you have to pay for INCOMING calls in Canada.

Seriously, I'm starting to think, why do people move there as it seems to be more expensive, pays less and there are few to none benefits.

Canada and the USA are very backwards in some of the things they have, they do it very differently from us. To be quite honest, why not invest some time into finding a visa suitable for the entire family - get the ball rolling on that, and go visit the place you'd like to live in Canada. You'll get a feel for what its like, see the different kind of prices and all that jazz. And just see if it would work?

Also, why on earth are you going to be importing your cars? Or even trying to find your current cars over there? You should just start small and basic in transport if you don't want to go on public transport.

And if you are really serious, why not stop spending the money you have right now on things that aren't a necessity and start saving for travelling out there, or for funding a home - if the price of your current house is not enough for a home you'd like in Canada.

Seems a little backwards then that you are worried about prices in Canada when you aren't exactly trying to downsize.

Well, with the fuel being cheaper, I don't really want to downsize tounge.gif

I'd be happy with a 318i... As long as it's a BMW.

If I really couldn't drive one, I'd probably go for a VW Golf.
