Gtaghost22
Plus, no one can deny that the 3rd-person shooter genre is dying, Uh, no it's not. First person shooters are more popular than ever, whereas in the early 2000s, it could be said that the two were fairly even in sales. Unless MP3, Resident Evil 6, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, generate a huge amount of hype that results in high sales (which I personally doubt will happen) it can be said that 3rd person shooters are in fact, a dying genre. The only first person shooter that sell good are : Call of Duty & Halo.. And this is because they have so much hype around them by the gaming media every year.. And its an easy pick-up and play arcade shooters. ONLY KIDS & TEENS will buy a new call of duty every year.. And like i said 3rd person shooters are NOT dying!! Just look at the Uncharted series (BEST NEW IP THIS GEN!!) , Gears of War 3 , Resident Evil 5.. and the upcoming games : Max Payne 3 , Resident Evil 6 ..etc Edited February 16, 2012 by Gtaghost22

Just look at the Uncharted series (BEST NEW IP THIS GEN!!) I didn't say first person shooters were good, I said they were popular. Quite a few people around here put words in my mouth Third person shooters are a dying genre as of now, although the genre may experience a revival if games like MP3, RE6, and MGR deliver huge sales. And we obviously have differing opinions on what a "dying genre" is. I personally think a genre is dying if it doesn't produce enough sales to sustain itself or if virtually no games are being developed in that particular genre. And this has happened to third person shooters in recent years since the only major release has been GOW:3 (Again, Uncharted isn't a third person shooter. And I googled whether it was a third person shooter, and most people seemed to agree that it was not.)

GTAIII was ranked 5TH, on the top 25 THIRD PERSON SHOOTERS of all time by GAMERANX. Google it and stop making ignorant comments about 3rd person shooter "dying". You are wrong, and clearly don't have a clue as to what a 3rd person shooter is, and the fact that the entire GTA franchise is based on the 3rd person shooter genre, pretty much destroys your theories. Go browse some forums and realize that most people don't consider GTA or Uncharted to be third person shooters. Gtaghost22
I agree with Nigel.. GTA IS A THIRD PERSON SHOOTER!! so is Uncharted, i know GTA is an open world game but it also a 3rd person shooter, Just like Uncharted which is an action/adventure 3rd person shooter game.. Jesus Christ - and here I am thinking Hydraulic's a buffoon You just said that GTA is an "open world" game. I rebutted that statement saying that GTA can be a TPS at will. How did you expect to win GTA IV's shoot outs? With a bat? No. You'd die. This is when the TPS mechanics come in. So you can say GTA is a TPS. and since GTA V will probably rely on shoot outs, you can rest assured as much as you hate MP3, GTA V will borrow from it heavily. Just deal with it, kid. Not everything can go your way.

Algonquin Assassin
In GTA the standard view is 3rd person which has a strong emphasis on gunplay, so yeah how can anyone say it's not a 3rd person shooter in that sense?
Jeeebuuus
GTA games are in the third person perspective. They allow the players to shoot weapons as the primary gameplay on foot. Its not a driving game with shooting in it, I'd say its a good mix of both and can be both at the same time.
73duster
Third-person shooter (TPS) is a genre of 3D action games in which the player character is visible on-screen, and the gameplay consists primarily of shooting This description is taken directly from wikipedia. There comes a point where you should just admit you are WRONG. In addition, your proclamation of 3rd person shooters becoming a "dying" genre is ludicrous considering that there is a growing concensus that first person shooters are oversaturating the market, and that it is THAT genre which will most likely experience a drop in interest in the upcoming years ahead. interpolfan11
GTA is an OPEN-WORLD, SANDBOX game. No one said that this genre doesn't take influence from third person shooters. However, just because GTA and other games in the genre take influences from third person shooters, doesn't mean that they're actually third person shooters. That would be like saying The Rolling Stones are a blues band just because they were influenced by American blues artists. No, they're a rock band because they're a completely different breed than a blues band. Similarly, GTA is a SANDBOX game because there's so much more to it than a linear, "go shoot this guy now" structure. Actually uncharted IS a third person shooter, a large proportion of the game is to do with shooting, and it's third person. Going by your logic GTA is not really a third person shooter either than, since it contains a lot more than shooting. Third person shooters are in no way dying, i don't know where you get your figures from.

73duster
Anyhow, i doubt anyone who claims that there is no interest for Max Payne 3 has ever bothered to check anywhere outside of this forum. There is a very large fanbase that is excited about it, and the ignorance of those who only think that THEY are the only ones who matter, give a bad name to GTA fans everywhere. So the website you visited is the end-all, be-all website for classifying games into genres? Please consider that there are very few people on the internet who consider GTA to be a primarily third person shooter series. Gamespot and IGN both classify it as something other than being a third person shooter. I posed a simple question that pertained to MP3. Then I argued about the state of the third person shooter genre. I never insulted MP3 or wrote that R* shouldn't be developing it. I even thanked those that showed me that there is legitimate reason to develop MP3.
