cherrycola
To people creaming their pants over large maps. Technically, if they put a huge mountain on the map, V could be much larger than RDR in terms of surface area, even if it isn't bigger viewed from a top-down perspective. And Rockstar wouldn't be lying if they did this. So embrace yourselves for massive disappointment guys...

meson1
So embrace yourselves for massive disappointment guys... Mr Picky here. The phrase you're looking for is "brace yourselves". To embrace oneself means something entirely different. On topic. Yes, topography would effectively increase the surface area of the map. But no, they won't stick a few mountains into a map the same size as previous GTAs in order to claim that it is "larger". That's ludicrous. Staten
If we're getting all fatalistic about it, it could just be really deep. Every interior could be explorable (which would technically increase the space the player can explore) or there could be an entire sewer network under the city. GarrowsKai
I saw an interview with Lazlow (the actual guy. not the GTA version) and he said how they all like take a copy home when a game is completed and get satisfaction from playing it, which combined with the sheer quality of the games you can see they really care about it, which isn't to say designers at EA don't care but they obviously don't get as much freedom as their R* counterparts because of all the franchises EA churns out. So with that in mind I don't think R* are screwing us on the map thing, I think it will be really big without using tall mountains to make it so. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/11454877 - This is the interview I was talking about. HydraulicWaRiOr
Sorry sir, but we only embrace The Omnipresence. But as for the map we believe that it will be a little bit bigger than Red Dead, but at the same time showcase different environments to make it seem as if you are going really fast when you are in the jets. meson1
Further to my post above, the largest GTA map to date, SA, had the very topography you are talking about. Not only was there Mount Chilliad, but there was high ground and lowlands all over the place. So GTA:SA's playing area already has a very high effective surface area. So for a new map with the same linear dimensions as the San Andreas to end up with even MORE surface area, it would have to look ridiculously mountainous and nothing like Los Angeles and the surrounding area. So I'm afraid this effectively disproves the OP's hypothesis. When Rockstar, talk about largest and most ambitious, and when Dan Houser says "a very big map", I think it's safe to say that they are referring to linear dimensions. The only question is how much bigger it will really be. Edited February 14, 2012 by meson1

GANGSTA26-VERCETTI
This is rockstar not EA I for one think r* is one of the only company that cares and plays there own game (claps after reading) Rockstar is a trusted company that will make you wait for a good time, but the end result will be of hard work and actually worth the money. The rockstar goons don't f*ck around, they mean true business. After playing all the gta's, imagine if rockstar was an actual mafia; they would be the best in the business. Their business is video game development, and they are sure as hell good at it.
RED_
R* are not the only company that cares and play their games. That's just stupid. The reason they make us wait? Because they can. Their GTA games are in their own class. When we talk about the latest Fifa or the latest COD it always mentioned with PES or Battlefield, because its one or the other, always. With GTA is doesn't matter who rivals it, it will be bought. They can take forever, build the tension up because everyone and their dog is waiting for it. Oh snap.. i just realised everyones dog may be waiting for it with that dog we saw in the trailer. Perverted dogs..

CryptReaperDorian
GTA V might have a big map for R*'s standards, but a "huge map" by R* would still be a pretty damn small map. Not taking elevation in account, I'd say you shouldn't expect GTA V to have a map larger than 20 square miles (about twice the size of GTA IV's map). Actually, that's even pushing it. R* makes detailed maps, not large maps.

Slamman
Well.... They said it themselves "LS and a REALLY LARGE MAP", Can we just PLEASE get past this already????!!!??????!!! What it means is that Los Santos is the FOCUS, but why could Rockstar not see the questions that would come about in showcasing a game clearly based upon the idea of revisiting San Andreas? This is where there is no simple answer. the only thing I see answering such things is more trailer, and game details, so WAIT FOR IT Edited February 14, 2012 by Slamman
