Patrizio
There has been much debate (and there will be until a line is drawn in the sand by Rockstar) as to whether or not other cities from the III era will feature in GTA V, without naming names. Now, when we look at past GTA's logically, locations or parts of the map are unlocked as the story progresses. For example: III: Portland > Staunton > Shoreside IV: Dukes/Broker/Bohan > Algonquin > Alderney Now, this has me thinking, barring Vice City, all of the III era and of course IV itself's locations have progress through three areas of the map. If we are to take Rockstar's current explanation that the location consists of Los Santos, the mountains, countryside and beaches, it makes me wonder how this will A). Be divided at the start B). How this will relate to the progression of the story. So far we have two distinct areas - Los Santos and its surrounding countryside - what would be the third area? A city/town in the desert on the Mexican border? What do you guys think? It will be interesting to see how Rockstar does this, as unlike NYC/Liberty, there are not islands divided naturally by water to base and divide the location off... GarrowsKai
I think water, or maybe a canyon if the map is large enough, will divide as it is the most appropriate natural barrier. I'm thinking, based on the trailer, that we will start off in a more affluent area of LS considering the VO went on about settling down with a family. Maybe the countryside, or at least part of it, will be open from the start and something with your family could take place there. Maybe your out for a hike or something and some old acquaintances from the protagonists criminal past could turn up and kidnap them, you have to commit crimes to get the money to get them back. Just my thoughts on the matter, but to me it sounds fairly logical for the start.
Patrizio
Thanks for the reply! I think the mountains provide a natural barrier - so would be a good bet. Possibly a crackdown on illegal migrants means the player cannot cross certain borders? The problem is, as I see it, NYC is divided up between three main islands and a tip of the mainland (The Bronx) so therefore it was fairly easy for Rockstar to divide the map up by having them all as islands. However, Los Angeles is one massive sprawl - it would seem odd to start there with the entirety of it open and then progress to just the countryside? If that was the case, there must be small towns beyond the mountains. Its possible there may even be a desert and even possible there is a desert city/town such as Palm Springs or further south a version of San Diego. For sake the of map division/storyline progression, I cannot see it being one huge Los Santos and a bit of countryside, if that makes sense. GarrowsKai
yeah I get what you mean! It is just based on LA though so they could easily change the geography a bit and have waterways dissecting the city in various ways. Mountains would be a cool divider and I think there will be a couple of towns outside of LS, it would help to break up the countryside a bit. Meekail
Los Santos > (another town) > Countryside and the surrounding hills > back to Los Santos Similar to GTA San Andreas. There should be another town, like Alderny in GTA IV. Edited February 14, 2012 by MetalisticMCena
Chillzz01
It will be most likely to divided up in section with roadblocks or natual boarders..
GarrowsKai
I wonder what the story behind the road closures will be. GTA III is was a destoryed and then broken bridge, VC was a hurricane, not sure if SA mentioned any reason and IV was terrorists. Migration issues sound good as mentioned by PaddsterG2k3, or could have natural disaster as the reason.
senor_huevos_benedicto
Yeah I do wonder how they'll do it, considering there aren't any rivers in LA (I don't think).

JvG-90
not sure if SA mentioned any reason Officer Frank Tenpenny said to Carl in the very beginning, he may not leave town, because they suspect him for the murder on officer Ralph Pendelbury. I think that's the reason.

I think that's the reason. That's why you get 4 stars whenever you fly over to another city. I don't think a police officer can close the Golden Gate bridge whenever he feels like it lol. Anyway, just after the bridge opens, a guy on the radio talks about earthquakes and the bridge finally being open, so earthquakes it is...
r0eladn
You're hunted by the maffia and you cant go into certain areas until you get a face lift. The face lift costs like 200 grand and when you paid that they wont recognize you anymore. or There is a nuclear fallout and a part of the city will get you radio active and youll slowly die when in that area. After a while the fallout is over and you can get to the new part.

Patrizio
You'll start in thr country, then small towns the game will end in LS,after all,ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY WALK INTO LOS SANTOS. This is what I mean. This would make sense, as usually, the place that is blocked off, such as Staunton Island or Algonquin is the place that the player wants to unlock - For all I love the countryside, unlocking it after starting in Los Santos does not seem as big an achievement as unlocking Los Santos after starting in the countryside, so to speak, which is why I feel there will definitley be other urban areas aside from Los Santos, even if it is say a small coastal town/city, such as Santa Barbara.
