Would you like to play GTA V like a TV series?

Something I've thought of for the longest time is how cool it would be if a storyline driven video game organized itself similarly to how TV programs create episodes and seasons. I love the GTA story-mode but one thing I felt was really lacking was the ability to emulate this experience through the multiplayer.

My idea would involve Rockstar releasing new "episodes" for us to play every so often that expands upon the previous episode. It could be offered as DLC. It would consist of mainly just new missions but could as well add in new cars, weapons, and features as they are introduce within the story.

Then they could work on stronger improvement to the game world itself (like how TLAD and TBOGT did) and release that as the start of the next "season".

Now if they could pull this off online, I think there's a large enough audience that would be down to group up with their pals every few weeks and play through the next "episode". If it supports multiple storyline characters online, there could be an element of roleplay to this too smile.gif.

I think Rockstar could make millions of this; as we know some TV shows never seem to end. EFLC was $40 and contained roughly 40-50 new missions... if they make 5 new missions each "episode", charge $5, and also include gameplay improvement along the way (adding new things like how TBOGT added in parachutes, NOS, etc.) I think many of us would be satisfied and they'd make a killing off it.

GTA is primarily about wrecking havok against AI counterparts. I felt this was lacking in IV multiplayer. Lets hope they don't make the same mistake twice.

No, I hate DLCs , also GTA is an open world game series.. Something like weekly or monthly "episodes" wont work in GTA, It worked with TBOGT and TLAD becuase they were only 2 "episodes" and they had nothing to do with the original GTA IV.

I understand not liking the prospect of DLC.

But why would it matter that it's a continuous storyline vs. a whole new storyline.

What negative affect is this going to cause?

For instance, there's nothing you can do at the end of GTAIV that would make it seem silly if you happened to have an extended story where you run a few jobs with Dwayne, or Jacob, or w/e.

Or a better example: Image if after "Roman's Sorrow" the game more or less ends... that episode at least. Then when you get the next episode, the next few missions occur or what not.

This "episode" thing would only work if the DLC is available both online and as a disc.

There are some people out there who lack a good internet provider or who just randomly lose connection (like me dozingoff.gif), or who just don't have internet all together.

And while it's a good idea to implement, I can't see Rockstar shelling out the cash for every "episode" to be on a disc, in a retail store.

EDIT: I may of mis-interpreted your post colgate.gif

They could release each season as a disc after the last episode of that season is released; the disc consisting of 4-5 episodes or what not.

As for the online thing, the online coop would be optional. Like Saints Row but not sh*tty. xD

It'd be crazy with the promotion thats pretty much requiered by Rockstar, but if they offer a disc to go along with it, I'd buy it icon14.gif

My motivation for this idea comes from all the damn TV I watch, I must admit. I'm an action-TV freak.

I can't get over how it awesome it would be to play as and control an avatar of Jackson Teller or Jack Bauer or anyone really who's interesting and has long, continuous and compelling storylines to be a part of.

To me Niko fits perfectly under this description, however the storyline surrounding him lacks the factors of being "long" or "continuous" sad.gif

EDIT: Sorry, when I say DLC I mean "extra content".... my fault.

100% agree.. Even though i have a good internet connection, i still hate DLCs & downloadable games, i prefer a retail copy anyday.. also some people dont have internet.. So that will help them alot

When I finished with previous games like SA, RDR and GTA IV I continued playing it just to finish the side quests, getting the collectibles and so forth but when that got boring it was really hard for me to keep playing them.

I've come to realize that what I love more than anything else about the GTA series is the rich stories. I'ts like reading a book. When you finish one you get a deep sense of satisfaction. You probably won't read it again but you may skim through certain chapters just to familarize yourself with certain aspects of the story.

It's the same with games. I really wish games like these will never end. I know DLC is too much of a neccessity for game companies these days but maybe we could have something like what Little Big Planet and Infamous 2 did by creating your own levels aka your own stories. Why not? If they could include a story emulator that players could create it would give the game so much more staying power.

Yeah that would be ace... especially if we could use the cam editor that's featured in IV to make cutscenes. That would be incredibly sweet. Unfortunately without profit incentive I don't see it happening though sad.gif. Maybe if they had online subscription to the service where you can download the user creations they would do it.

Rockstar might make some pretty good games but they are as bad at money grabbing as anyone else.

I had the same ideas kinda in my previous post, I like this very much!

And then when R* gets bored and goes off to make GTA VI, the storyline will end abruptly, just like most TV series... typical.

So NO, I hate to have to pay for every "episode", without an ending in sight.

in my honest opinion i reckon gta 5 is going to have some major dlc planned, not like new city's because that's just ridiculous, but i mean monthly dlc just like call of duty, anyway your idea is good i like it but i wouldn't buy the episodes if they cost £10 each

Something about the concept of 'episodes' just seems a little corny. And it's probably not plausible at the rate you want them anyway. Every month? It takes lots of time to dev. that sort of stuff and just wouldn't be possible.

Mulder and gunz, good points. I would definitely be worried about them abruptly ending it. Also they certainly could not be developing this in real-time, that is to say between releases. It would have to be like a series would be where they take around half a year or more to develop each season. It would then be released as episodes weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc. until the season finishes.

It would take a fair amount of planning but if they kept it realistic I think they could avoid these problems mentioned. Say 3 seasons released over a course of 2 years from release day. Season 1 being the original game. If it works out they could expand an extra season.

So basicly like the way the Driver San Fransisco storyline is played out but through DLC's. I would prefer it if it was done in a similar way to LA Noire where you get a new case of missions each DLC so you have a new set of missions you have to do for a new character. La Noires cases were quite large in terms of missions so you could probably get a good 8 GTA missions from the same ammount of dlc space.

I have always thought that it'd be great to use DLC to make a GTA "series" (as long as they came out on disc eventually). However, it probably won't happen because lots of people will complain about it. If they did it though, I'd like something like the EFLC, where different stories complemented the main one, sort of like the way The Wire showed the impact of the drugs trade from a lot of perspectives.

From the topic title, all I could think of was the sh**ty Sopranos game..

which had SO much potential and was a big let-down for me.

Not sure I would like to get pieces of a game a little at a time, lol...

save it up, and give it to me all at once.

Triple Vacuum Seal

This sounds like it could work but 4-6 years from now this forum will be raging with those who wished R* North had been working on GTAVI or whatever instead of DLC so they wouldn't have to wait for the next installment.

Nah I wouldn't like to pay for small episodes, the only DLC I'd buy is something like the GTA 4 DLC.

@lipalm - You don't play as Cole in the DLC? Didn't know that xD

@Staten - Did you just say The Wire? icon14.gificon14.gificon14.gif .

For those who don't like the idea of small episodes at a time; you'll always have the option to buy each "season" on disc. It would be similar to how you'd experience TLAD/TBOGT, with the exception being the story is still based around the main character as opposed to new ones.

I used that thread in The Ballad of Gay Tony and played GTA 4: The Complete Collection in the correct order. It would make a great TV show. Niko and Johnny are legends. I've only just completed the bank robbery mission, so I can't judge Luis yet.

I see one slight problem with this idea.

Such a big part of every GTA game for fans is the living, breathing city that the developers create. With this system of selling the game in small episodes, somebody could obtain an entire island of the city for $5. If someone bought three episodes that each featured one of the three islands, he could have the entire city for as little as $15. I just don't see Rockstar being able to afford this.

However, this idea would be good as far as offering a sort of "demo" of the game to unsure customers.

The closest example so far of what you're talking about is the Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare disc which was $30. It included full multiplayer compatibility with Red Dead Redemption and the full free-roam world, although in single-player it's the undead version of the world. I don't remember what the regular RDR disc was selling for by the time UN came out but if it was still $60 then the UN disc was a half-price ticket to the same multiplayer experience.
